Date and place: Written on Patmos island, about 96 A.D. (Rev 1:9).

Author: The apostle John (Rev 1:1). See Summary of John.

Theme: The revelation (unveiling) of (from) Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him to show unto His servants things (events) which must shortly come to pass (Rev 1:1).

These "things" were to take place from John’s day to and including the eternal events of the new heaven and new earth.

The events are consecutive in order with parenthetical passages inserted between the main events, which explain certain things that are to happen along with the main events but are not the same as these events.

The book has three clearly-defined divisions (Rev 1:19), the contents of which follow each other in the following order:

1. "The things which thou hast seen," i.e., the vision of Christ in the midst of the candlesticks (Rev 1:12-20), which, together with the introduction to the whole book forms chapter Rev 1:1-20. May also be a reference to the Gospel of John

2. "The things which are," i.e., the seven letters to the seven churches in Asia Minor, or present Turkey, to whom the whole book is addressed (Rev. 2:1-3:22). These messages to the churches apply to the whole church age and until the rapture of the church just before the future tribulation and coming of the Antichrist, who will be here for the last seven years of this age (Dan 9:27; 2Th 2:7-12; Rev. 6:1-19:21). May also reference the Epistles of 1, 2, and 3 John

3. "The things which shall be hereafter," i.e., events after the rapture of the church (Rev. 4:1-22:5).

These include the scenes in heaven (Rev. 4-5), The seven seals, trumpets, and vials and their

parenthetical statements (Rev. 14:1-19:21), - 4 -

If the things of Rev 4:1 on must be after the things of the churches, then they will not be fulfilled along with the things of the churches. This means that every event of Rev. 4-22 must be fulfilled after the rapture of the church. It also means that no historical or present event could possibly be a fulfillment of any event of Rev. 4-22.

To apply this to the rapture one must take John to be a type of the church, the call to "come up hither" a type of the shout-command at the rapture, and the third heaven as the destination of believers at the rapture.

One cannot base a doctrine on a type by itself. Proof of the timing of the rapture must rest upon the direct statements of Scripture elsewhere. There is no need to search the Apocalypse for a direct mention of the

There are multiple examples and types throughout Scripture that point to a pretribulation rapture of the church. More than enough to establish the mystery of Christ gathering His church to be with Him. things which. This phrase is crucial to understanding the structure of the book of Revelation. In the light of Rev 1:19, this phrase marks the third grand division of the book as the "things which must be hereafter." Interpreters differ widely in their understanding of the book of Revelation.

Four major schools or systems of interpretation have been

(1) the preterist, which takes all the events in the book to have been fulfilled in John’s own day, the position held by many respected scholars and critics;

(2) the historicist, which understands the prophecy to be in continuous fulfillment from John’s day to the end of history;

(3) the idealist, or spiritual scheme of interpretation, which takes the prophecies not as prophetic of future events but places a "spiritual" interpretation upon them, believing they reveal timeless truth about the conflict

(4) the futurist, which holds that the majority of the book deals with end-time events which are still future. Most Bible-believing Christians today would probably opt either for the historicist or the futurist position of interpretation.

The historicist position is reflected in the original notes of the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. The historicist position suffers from the inability of interpreters of this school to arrive at provable and consistently agreed upon events in world history which fulfill the prophecies. The method requires the student of Revelation to go outside the Bible and seek for the fulfillment of predictions in the past events of world history, and to one not well taught in history the method is impossible to carry out, leaving the book of Revelation largely closed to the ordinary reader. The futurist position suffers, in the opinion of some, because it makes the book largely inapplicable to the original readers of the book, or to anyone since then, since the events are all placed in the future. A sufficient answer to such an objection is that the practical object of prophecy is to motivate us to holy living in watchful expectation of our Lord’s return (+**Luk 21:36, **2Pe 3:14), and Scripture itself teaches us that we have "a more sure word of prophecy" to serve as a light in dark times (2Pe 1:19). All Bible prophecy was written with both a near and a distant vantage point. A prophet predicted some things which transpired during his own lifetime, as verification that he was a true prophet of God (Deu 18:22), but also spoke of things in the distant future, which only the passing of time could verify (see the excellent discussion of these matters in R. B. Girdlestone, The Grammar of Prophecy, Chapter 3, "Tests of the Truth of Prophecy," pp. 16-24). The futurist position is the only position which can be entirely consistent in interpreting the prophecies of the book of

Any system of prophetic interpretation, to be correct, must follow a consistent principle of literal interpretation for all of Scripture (using the same principle for prophetic as is used for non-prophetic portions), and must appeal to Scripture (not tenuous and unsubstantiated historic parallels) for its justification (+*Isa 8:20). What John writes in Revelation corresponds to the predictions in the Old Testament (Isa 11:11 note), the prophetic discourses of Christ himself, such as the most significant Olivet discourse in Matthew 24 and parallels, and the prophetic teaching of the Apostle Paul (Tit 2:13 note). Futurists, consistent with the divinely provided divisions of the book of Revelation (Rev 1:19), place the events of chapters 4—22 in the future, understanding them to be events particularly connected with the Seventieth Week of Daniel’s prophecy (+*Dan 9:27 note), and the time of the Great Tribulation. The importance of including selected references of this category cannot be overestimated. Such reference sets furnish the Bible-believing Christian with a defense against false doctrines promulgated by what are sometimes known as "false cults." Thus, by means of these symbols you can learn the commonly cited proof texts used to support a mistaken interpretation, and by reference to the cross-references not so marked, and especially by reference to cross-references marked with a % or "contrast" symbol, the reader can learn the biblical answer to many of the false positions of the cults.

x x or ? placed before or sometimes after a cross-reference indicates doubtful validity of the reference, for it is a wrong identification of the source of a quotation (see Re 15:6), or it is a proof text underlying a mistaken doctrinal (Ge 3:15. Ga 6:15) or prophetic interpretation (Re 4:1), or it is a questionable identification of a figure of speech, questionable because it is misidentified (Ge 1:26n), or arbitrarily supports a mistaken (Ge 24:10n) viewpoint.

PROPHECY

1. A Text Apart from its Context is a Pretext

2. When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense;

Take every word at its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context, studied in the light of related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths, indicates clearly otherwise.

3. The Law of Double ReferenceThe Law of Double Reference is the principle of associating similar or related ideas, which are usually separated from one another by long periods of times, and which are blended into a single picture like the blending of pictures by a stereopticon.

A clear cut example of this law may be found in Isaiah 11:1-5.

Verses 1-2 refer to the First Coming of the Messiah.Verses 3-5 tell of the Second time He comes to earth.

4. The Law of RecurrenceThe Law of Recurrence involves the recording of an event and the repetition of the account which gives added details.

This principle may be illustrated by the artist who “blocks out the portrait” of a person at the first sitting and adds details at subsequent sittings.

Example: Ezekiel 38:1 - 39:16Chapter 38 gives a complete account of the coming invasion of Israel by Russia and the subsequent destruction of the Russian army in Israel. Chapter 39 then repeats the account from the beginning giving additional details.
