Technology Is Not that Good

Nowadays people are used to having technology at the palm of their hands. They go to work and everything is fed on systems, all the communication is done via Internet and every employee has their own computer to work with.

Then they go home and they have a computer there. They use it to get in touch with friends, play games, and even watch videos and listen to music.

Practically everybody has a smartphone and is connected to the internet 24/7. Some people have tablets and carry them around as well because apparently just having a smartphone is not enough . Connectivity seems to be a must in the modern day age.

This all sounds wonderful, but I don’t think it is as good as it seems. I can mention three reasons to justify my comment, but I’m sure they are not the only ones.

Technology is ruining the environment. Don’t you ever ask yourself where all the old gadgets and devices have gone? What happens to all the old computers, TVs, phones and many other gadgets that we throw away? Did you know that their materials can poison the Earth? They are neither reusable nor repairable and people throw them out without a care. Nobody thinks about the land and water they are polluting by simply disposing of a device.

On top of that, people are becoming less sociable. I have seen circle of friends being destroyed by technology. People go out and instead of talking to each other at the restaurant’s table, they just keep on looking at their phones and checking social media or anything else. Some people don’t even go out anymore. They just stay home and don’t get together with friends (they think sending them messages is enough).

The last disadvantage I’m going to mention is the fact that the Internet has given everyone a voice, but there are a lot of people who use it to discredit others and cause distress. Anonymity has turned people into cowards, liars, and even thieves. Of course there are great people out there, but now you have to be careful to sort them out in the middle of those who simply wanner take advantage of others.

( ) b. According to the author, technology is ruining a lot of people’s social skills.

( ) c. According to the author, people are not conscious of the pollution technology is causing.

( ) d. The author trusts everybody that is online nowadays.
