Mental maths starter- Times Tables

Look at your times table challenge booklet in your pack. Choose a table to focus on that you are working towards your bronze or silver award. If you have achieved bronze and silver in all, start working towards gold. Make sure it is one that will challenge you!

Type in the table you are practising and the word ‘song’ into YouTube and find your favourite one from the options. Listen to it at least twice and try and sing along. For example- I might type in ‘7 times table song’ and there should be several options to choose from.

Each week we will be looking back at our times table challenge booklets. At any point if you feel you are ready to achieve your bronze, silver or gold award in the table you were practising today then ask someone at home to test you at a time that suits them. Don’t worry if you aren’t quite there yet, keep practising and you will be there soon.

1. Copy and complete the division squares below into your maths jotter, looking at the example on the first square to help you.

2. Complete the appropriate word problems below, using your knowledge of solving multiplication and division sums. You may use whichever method you prefer from the strategies you have learned. Take care to read each question carefully to work out whether the calculation you need to complete involves multiplication or division. For the hot challenges you may need to complete 2 calculations to solve the problem. You may also need to use the grid method for solving larger problems.

2. Tulips are sold in bunches of 5. Randle buys 30 tulips. How many bunches does he buy?

3. Write your own multiplication or division word problem, using the examples above (and from last week) to help!

1. A toy shop has 9 bags of 12 bouncy balls and 18 bags of 8 bouncy balls. How many bouncy balls are there altogether?

2. Jill saves 10p every week. She wants to buy a new game costing £1.60. How many weeks is it before she can afford to buy the game?

4. Mr White wants 42 eggs. Eggs are sold in boxes of 6. How many boxes of eggs will Mr White need?

3. Write your own word problems that can be solved by

a) A school buys 25 packs of whiteboards. Each pack contains 8 boxes of 12 whiteboards. How many whiteboards are purchased?

b) A teacher wants to fill eight pencil pots with 36 pencils but is 63 pencils short. How many pencils does the teacher have?

c) Write your own word problems that can be solved by
