Welcome

We want to welcome you, your child, and your family to Rosemont Elementary/Middle School’s Pre-

Kindergarten through 2nd grade primary program. We are looking forward to an exciting school year filled with

academics, new experiences and lots of fun! Rosemont Elementary/Middle School is…

A place for your child to grow and learn in a safe environment

A place where you and your child’s teacher are able to form a partnership and an open line of

communication which is vital to your child’s future success

A place that tailors to children whom are at different stages of development and require instructional

programs to match their needs

A place where your child will engage in various instructional experiences, including the four content

areas (reading ELA, social studies, math and science), large and small group lessons and learning

centers

A place that encourages your child’s curiosity, joy of discovery in learning, exploring, investigating, and

questioning

A place where your child is accepted as a unique individual; and

A place where self-esteem and confidence are strengthened

Getting Ready for School

Every school year is the beginning of a new experience for your child. As your child begins their new

experience at Rosemont Elementary/Middle School, prepare your child by talking to them about the great,

happy and friendly environment. We want to begin the new school year with a positive attitude. So please

answer all of your child’s questions regarding school with a positive response.

Your attitude about school is very important to your child’s success. Hearing positive things from you

now will help develop good habits as they move through school. If you have any concerns about school and/or

the learning environment, share them with your child’s teacher or principal, not your child.

Give your child opportunities to play with other children, share, and complete tasks using teamwork.

Young children see the world differently than older children, and they learn best through direct, sensory, and

social experiences. They need to manipulate, explore and experiment with real objects. They learn by doing,

moving and talking. At Rosemont Elementary/Middle School our motto is “Excellence without excuse and

failure is not an option.” Therefore, it is important to explain the importance of being able to not only work

independently but being able to work with others.

Rosemont Elementary/Middle School Dress Code

Students are required to be in their Rosemont uniform every day. The Rosemont Elementary Middle School

PreK-2nd grade primary uniform consists of…

Orange Rosemont logo shirt (purchased at Rosemont)

Navy blue khaki style pants

Navy blue khaki style shorts

Navy blue khaki style material skirt

Navy blue khaki material uniform dress

Royal blue Rosemont Logo hooded sweat jacket (is optional, but is the only outerwear allowed)

Students may wear long sleeves under their uniform shirt if they don’t wish to wear the sweat jacket

Jeans, jeggings, sweatpants and other non-twill style bottoms are not to be worn and are not within the uniform

guidelines. School attire should be clean, appropriate in length, style, fit, etc. and without holes or rips.

Rosemont Elementary Middle School logo shirts and hooded sweat jackets are to be purchased in the school

office.

Lost and Found: If a child misplaces their hoodie or uniform shirt, those items will be placed in an area

designated for a lost and found. Please check with the main office if something is misplaced or lost.

Attendance

Being in school and on time every day are significant factors in the kind of attitude your child will develop

about school. One way to view school attendance is to compare it to a parent going to work every day. Students

are to arrive at Rosemont Elementary/Middle School each school day promptly at 7:50 a.m. If your student

would like to have a nutritious breakfast to ensure a functional and prosperous school day then they would need

to arrive at 7:30 a.m. The sense of responsibility and the establishment of routine will help your child feel

comfortable and secure. A positive attitude about school and regular attendance will pay off for years to come.

During the school year there are opportunities for recognition for those students that have perfect attendance.

Perfect attendance is: Students who are on time and in school every day. Students are marked late if they

arrive to school after 8:05am, late passes are issued starting at 8:06am. Chronic lateness and other attendance

concerns will result in other interventions (included, but not limited to: attendance contracts, parent conference,

SST and court referrals).

Positive Behavior Support

At Rosemont Elementary/Middle School we believe in creating a positive environment for our students, by

providing them with opportunities to become successful learners. The teachers in grade levels pre-kindergarten

through 2nd have created behavioral management systems which help tailor the flow of their classroom

instruction and set up to allow all students to meet with success. The behavior management system gives your

child the opportunity to always work harder to achieve to do their very best! Some teachers may reward positive

behavior with incentives to reward students who follow their classroom rules. All classroom rules reflect the

expectations at Rosemont Elementary/Middle School.

Parent-Teacher Communication

There are several different ways to communicate with your child’s teacher. Some of these are:

Sending notes in your child’s work folder

Email

Text message

Parent/Teacher conference

Parent Survey

Due to the importance of instruction, teachers are unavailable to conference during instructional time. If you

want to have a conference with your teacher, please coordinate a time. Every adult entering the building must

present a valid state issued ID/license to the office and be scanned in each time entering the building.

Volunteers

Rosemont Elementary/Middle School encourages parents to volunteer both inside and outside of the classroom.

Volunteering at the school is a great way to become involved in your child’s education. Also, parents are

always eager to volunteer as chaperones on field trips. As part of the school’s chaperone policy, each chaperone

is required to complete and sign a chaperone contact/agreement form prior to attending their first trip. This is to

ensure that the chaperone understands their responsibilities on our school trips.

To become a volunteer in your child’s school, potential volunteers must contact Baltimore City Public Schools

Engagement Office for information and to complete the application process.

Snack-Time

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will be allowed to enjoy a healthy snack during the school day. We

are asking families to send their child to school with a healthy snack each day in a zipped tote. Please clearly

label the “snack” tote with your child’s name and identify the tote as “snack” tote.

For grade levels Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade, if there are any opportunities to buy snacks from the

school, please put your child’s money in a container or bag (baggie, coin purse, etc...) clearly labeled with your

child’s name and “snack money” written on it. Information will be sent home in regards to snack distribution

within the school.

Page 6: €¦  · Web view03/02/2020  · To become a volunteer in your child’s school, potential volunteers must contact Baltimore City Public Schools Engagement Office for information

Homework

Homework is given to the students to provide a connection between school and home for the students.

Completing homework assignments and activities will assist your child with practicing and reviewing the skills

that were learned in school. We do expect all assignments and activities to be completed. At Rosemont

Elementary/Middle School Homework is graded and, ultimately, will influence your child’s grade. In addition,

your child will complete a weekly reading log and practice spelling and/or sight words. Reading every night

will improve word identification, reading fluency, and story recall. Remember to always ask questions about

what was read.

Thank you for assisting your child with their homework assignments sand activities and not completing the

work for them. It is very important for the teacher to be able to monitor your child’s progress and for your child

to feel independent and confident in their capabilities.

Checking Back Packs

Upon arrival into the classroom, students in grade levels Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade are expected to put

their backpacks away, remove folders, notebooks, money, papers, or notes and place them in the appropriate

areas. The children are learning to be independent and responsible for their own things and it is not possible for

the teacher to check every backpack, every day.

Parents are Teachers Too

Prior to entering Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten you were your child’s primary teacher. As a student at

Rosemont Elementary/Middle School your child is provided with a certified teacher to assist in their education,

but your role as primary teacher continues to be very important. Children learn all the time, not just when they

are in school. It is very important to reinforce the lessons and activities learned in school and incorporate them

with every day activities at home.

Here are some things you can do to continue to assist your child with learning outside of school:

Be a good listener. Let your child talk. Ask questions that prompt your child to think, such as “Why do you think so?” or “What do you think that means?”

Read to your child every day. Grade level books are best because the content is understood and provide enough challenge when questions are answered.

Page 7: €¦  · Web view03/02/2020  · To become a volunteer in your child’s school, potential volunteers must contact Baltimore City Public Schools Engagement Office for information

Look at the schoolwork your child brings home and comment on it. If you ignore it or throw it out, your child may believe that their quality of work is not important.

Watch age appropriate educational television programs with your child, and talk about them together

Always give your child praise. Their best may not be 100%, but your child should know that you are pleased with his or her progress. Children learn at different rates and should not be compared to their classmates or siblings.

Provide a special place in the home where your child can keep his or her books and other learning supplies. This can be a drawer, a shelf, a box, or anywhere else that can be designated for the child.

Illnesses

At Rosemont Elementary/Middle School we strive to keep every student healthy. If your child is displaying

symptoms of illnesses that means that your child should stay home from school. Children are careless and

spread germs causing contamination throughout the classroom and the school building. Symptoms of illnesses

may include….

Fever, any temperature of 100.4° Fahrenheit (38° Celsius) is a fever. Children should never attend school with a fever.

Vomiting or diarrhea Bad pain (body pain) Green fluids (signs of infection) Coughing that won’t stop or anything different about your child’s breathing

It may be difficult to decide whether to keep your child home from school when he or she is sick, especially

when symptoms may be mild. On the other hand, sending your sick child to school could mean a miserable day

for him or her, with the added possibility of getting other kids sick. If your children require medication during

the school day or suffer from chronic medical issues, please check with the school nurse for required forms, or

the protocol for medication distribution.

TECHNOLOGY RESPONSIBLE USE POLICY

Rosemont Elementary/Middle School provides its students and staff access to a variety of technological resources. These resources provide opportunities to enhance learning and improve communication within the school community and with the larger global community. Through the school system's technological resources, users can observe events as they occur around the world, interact with others on a variety of subjects, and acquire access to current and in-depth information.

Rosemont intends that students and employees benefit from these resources while remaining within the bounds of safe, legal, and responsible use. Accordingly, Rosemont establishes this policy to govern student and employee use of school system technological resources. This policy applies regardless of whether such use occurs on or off school system property, and it applies to all school system technological resources, including but not limited to computer networks and connections, the resources, tools, and learning environments made available by or on the networks, and all devices that connect to those networks.

A. EXPECTATIONS FOR USE OF SCHOOL TECHNOLOGICAL RESOURCES

The use of school system technological resources, including access to the Internet, is a privilege, not a right. Individual users of the school system's technological resources are responsible for their behavior and communications when using those resources. Responsible use of school system technological resources is use that is ethical, respectful, academically honest, and supportive of student learning. Each user has the responsibility to respect others in the school community and on the Internet. Users are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. General student and employee behavior standards, including those prescribed in applicable board policies, the Code of Student Conduct, and other regulations and school rules, apply to use of the Internet and other school technological resources.

In addition, anyone who uses school system computers or electronic devices or who accesses the school network or the Internet using school system resources must comply with the additional rules for responsible use listed in Section B, below. These rules are intended to clarify expectations for conduct but should not be construed as all-inclusive.

All students and employees must be informed annually of the requirements of this policy and the methods by which they may obtain a copy of this policy. Before using school system technological resources, students and employees must sign a statement indicating that they understand and will strictly comply with these requirements and acknowledging awareness that the school system uses monitoring systems to monitor and detect inappropriate use of technological resources. Failure to adhere to these requirements will result in disciplinary action, including revocation of user privileges. Willful misuse may result in disciplinary action and/or criminal prosecution under applicable state and federal law.

B. RULES FOR USE OF SCHOOL TECHNOLOGICAL RESOURCES

1. School system technological resources are provided for school-related purposes only. Acceptable uses of such technological resources are limited to responsible, efficient, and legal activities that support learning and teaching. Use of school system technological resources for commercial gain or profit is prohibited. Student personal use of school system technological resources for amusement or entertainment is also prohibited. Because some incidental and occasional personal use by employees is inevitable, Rosemont permits infrequent and brief personal use by employees so long as it occurs on personal time, does not interfere with school system business, and is not otherwise prohibited by board policy or procedure.

2. Under no circumstance may software purchased by the school system be copied for personal use.

3. Students and employees must comply with all applicable laws, including those relating to copyrights and trademarks, confidential information, and public records. Any use that violates state or federal law is strictly

Page 11: €¦  · Web view03/02/2020  · To become a volunteer in your child’s school, potential volunteers must contact Baltimore City Public Schools Engagement Office for information

prohibited. Plagiarism of Internet resources will be treated in the same manner as any other incidents of plagiarism, as stated in the Code of Student Conduct.

4. No user of technological resources, including a person sending or receiving electronic communications, may engage in creating, intentionally viewing, accessing, downloading, storing, printing, or transmitting images, graphics (including still or moving pictures), sound files, text files, documents, messages, or other material that is obscene, defamatory, profane, pornographic, harassing, abusive, or considered to be harmful to minors.

5. The use of anonymous proxies to circumvent content filtering is prohibited.

6. Users may not install or use any Internet-based file sharing program designed to facilitate sharing of copyrighted material.

7. Users of technological resources may not send electronic communications fraudulently (i.e., by misrepresenting the identity of the sender).

8. Users must respect the privacy of others. When using e-mail, chat rooms, blogs, or other forms of electronic communication, students must not reveal personal identifying information or information that is private or confidential, such as the home address or telephone number, credit or checking account information, or social security number of themselves or fellow students. In addition, school employees must not disclose on school system websites or web pages or elsewhere on the Internet any personally identifiable, private, or confidential information concerning students (including names, addresses, or pictures) without the written permission of a parent or guardian or an eligible student, except as otherwise permitted by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Users also may not forward or post personal communications without the author's prior consent.

9. Users may not intentionally or negligently damage computers, computer systems, electronic devices, software, computer networks, or data of any user connected to school system technological resources. Users may not knowingly or negligently transmit computer viruses or self-replicating messages or deliberately try to degrade or disrupt system performance. Users must scan any downloaded files for viruses.

10. Users may not create or introduce games, network communications programs, or any foreign program or software onto any school system computer, electronic device, or network without the express permission of the technology director or designee.

11. Users are prohibited from engaging in unauthorized or unlawful activities, such as "hacking" or using the computer network to gain or attempt to gain unauthorized or unlawful access to other computers, computer systems, or accounts.

12. Users are prohibited from using another individual's ID or password for any technological resource without permission from the individual. Students must also have permission from the teacher or other school official.

13. Users may not read, alter, change, block, execute, or delete files or communications belonging to another user without the owner's express prior permission.

14. Employees shall not use passwords or user IDs for any data system (e.g., the state student information and instructional improvement system applications, time-keeping software, etc.) for an unauthorized or improper purpose.

15. If a user identifies a security problem on a technological resource, he or she must immediately notify a system administrator. Users must not demonstrate the problem to other users. Any user identified as a security risk will be denied access.

16. Teachers shall make reasonable efforts to supervise students' use of the Internet during instructional time.

Page 12: €¦  · Web view03/02/2020  · To become a volunteer in your child’s school, potential volunteers must contact Baltimore City Public Schools Engagement Office for information

17. Views may be expressed on the Internet or other technological resources as representing the view of the school system or part of the school system only with prior approval by the principal or designee.

C. RESTRICTED MATERIAL ON THE INTERNET

The Internet and electronic communications offer fluid environments in which students may access or be exposed to materials and information from diverse and rapidly changing sources, including some that may be harmful to students. Rosemont recognizes that it is impossible to predict with certainty what information on the Internet students may access or obtain. Nevertheless school system personnel shall take reasonable precautions to prevent students from accessing material and information that is obscene, pornographic, or otherwise harmful to minors, including violence, nudity, or graphic language that does not serve a legitimate pedagogical purpose.

D. PARENTAL CONSENT

Rosemont recognizes that parents of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards their children should follow when using media and information sources. Accordingly, before a student may independently access the Internet, the student's parent must be made aware of the possibility that the student could obtain access to inappropriate material while engaged in independent use of the Internet. The parent and student must consent to the student's independent access to the Internet and to monitoring of the student's Internet activity and e-mail communication by school personnel.

In addition, in accordance with Rosemont's goals and visions for technology, students may require accounts in third party systems for school related projects designed to assist students in mastering effective and proper online communications or to meet other educational goals. Parental permission will be obtained when necessary to create and manage such third party accounts.

E. PRIVACY

Students, employees, visitors, and other users have no expectation of privacy in anything they create, store, send, delete, receive, or display when using the school system's network, devices, Internet access, email system, or other technological resources owned or issued by the school system, whether the resources are used at school or elsewhere, and even if the use is for personal purposes. Users should not assume that files or communications created, transmitted, or displayed using school system technological resources or stored on servers or on the storage mediums of individual devices will be private. The school system may, without notice, (1) monitor, track, and/or log network access, communications, and use; (2) monitor and allocate fileserver space; and (3) access, review, copy, store, delete, or disclose the content of all user files, regardless of medium, the content of electronic mailboxes, and system outputs, such as printouts, for any lawful purpose. Such purposes may include, but are not limited to, maintaining system integrity, security, or functionality, ensuring compliance with board policy and applicable laws and regulations, protecting the school system from liability, and complying with public records requests. School system personnel shall monitor online activities of individuals who access the Internet via a school-owned device.

By using the school system's network, Internet access, email system, devices, or other technological resources, individuals consent to have that use monitored by authorized school system personnel as described in this policy.

F. USE OF PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY ON SCHOOL SYSTEM PROPERTY

Each principal may establish rules for his or her school site as to whether and how personal technology devices (including, but not limited to smart phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) may be used on campus. Rosemont assumes no responsibility for personal technology devices brought to school.
