• What is the Web of Knowledge? Exploration of the Web of Knowledge platform covering search options, database selection and additional resources available.

• How do I query the Web of Science? Examination of the Web of Science General Search Page: Citation Index selections, WOS search options and Time span selection.

• Examples searching Web of Science fields and search rules

• Now I’ve performed a search, what do my WOS results show me? Find out how to use Analytical and Refining tools to discover who, what and where your results relate too.

• Using Author Identification Tools to aid in searching for authors

• I want more background on a paper of interest. Open up the Full Record to explore Citing Articles (Times Cited), Cited Items (References) and Related Records.

• What can a Citation Map show me? Experience how this discovery tool enables you to explore in an interactive way references associated with a paper of interest to reveal trends and patterns in research.

• What’s included in a Citation Report? Can it help me with Research Evaluation? Learn more about what a Citation Report can uncover for a set of results and how this applies to evaluating research. Features of the Citation Report include the h index, Average Citation per paper, Total Citations and Citing Articles.

• Which journals have the most impact in my area of research? Which journals have published the most number of articles in my area of research? Learn how JCR metrics can help you discover the best journals in your area of research.

• How do I find other researchers related to my area of investigation? How do I know I am searching for the correct author? Learn how researchers are using and connecting to www.researcherid.com.

TOPIC SEARCHING RULES• Capitalization

• Capitalization does not matter: use upper, lower, or mixed case. For example: AIDS, Aids, and aids

• Boolean Search Operators (Not applicable to all search fields)

AND, OR, NOT, and SAME

• Wildcards

H INDEX• The h-index is an index that quantifies both the actual scientific productivity and the

apparent scientific impact of a scientist

• The index can also be applied to the productivity and impact of a group of scientists, such as a department or university or country

• A scholar with an index of h (12) has published h (12) papers each of which has been cited by others at least h (12) times.

Page 11: Web of Knowledge Training Session - 2010

12

H INDEX• ‘An index to quantify an individual's scientific research output’

• Jorge. E. Hirsch, 2005

• Department of Physics, University of California at San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093-0319

• Definition and Purpose

• The h-index is an index that quantifies both the actual scientific productivity and the apparent scientific impact of a scientist

• The index can also be applied to the productivity and impact of a group of scientists, such as a department or university or country

• Hirsch writes: A scientist has index h if h of his Np papers have at least h citations each, and the other (Np - h) papers have at most h citations each.

• In other words, a scholar with an index of h has published h papers each of which has been cited by others at least h times.

• The h-index reflects both the number of publications and the number of citations per publication.

• The index is designed to improve upon simpler measures such as the total number of citations or publications.

• The index works properly only for comparing scientists working in the same field; citation conventions differ widely among different fields.

• Hirsch suggests that, for physicists, a value for h of about 12 might be a useful guideline for tenure decisions at major research universities. A value of about 18 could mean a full professorship, 15–20 could mean a fellowship in the American Physical Society, and 45 or higher could mean membership in the United States National Academy of Sciences[2].
