ADVOCACY IN THE IR TRIBUNALS: NOW AT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SYDNEY

2015 marked the successful start of the Society’s formal involvement in the “Advocacy in the Tribunals” course at the University of Technology Sydney. This is a ten week course (one night a week) that teaches participants how to plan successful appearances and to develop quality advocacy skills. Participants have the opportunity to build on their skills in presenting before industrial tribunals, including moots presided over by members of the Fair Work Commission (FWC) and NSW Industrial Relations Commission. IRSNSW offers the course in conjunction with the Centre for Management and Organisation Studies (CMOS) at University of Technology Sydney. The course is coordinated by Damian Oliver, a member of the Society’s Executive Committee. The course convenors are experienced barristers Anthony Britt and Anthony Howell and FWC Deputy President Sams. Seventeen participants took part in 2015, with a range of backgrounds: officials from unions and employer associations, employment lawyers, public sector employment relations specialists and FWC associates. The course will run again in 2016, from 1 June to 3 August. Bookings will go live early in 2016 and places are limited. The course costs $2400 with discounts for IRSNSW members and early bird bookings. Further information will be available from the IRS website.

K&L Gates hosted the inaugural mixer event between students, graduates and practitioners in September 2015 organised by IRSNSW Student Committee representative Kurt Walpole. IR/HR students from the University of Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney and the University of NSW and recent graduates networked with industrial relations and human resources practitioners from law firms, employer associations, unions, industrial tribunals, consulting and government agencies. 30 attendees enjoyed a few drinks and canapes while listening to guest presenters Pranav Bhatt and Natalie Lang recalling their recent journeys through university, balancing part time work with study before joining an employer association and union respectively. Both presenters shared stories and a few laughs on how the field of IR/HR can lead to a variety of fulfilling career and learning pathways which made all those lectures worthwhile!
