Year 9 Boys Basketball

Weavers Year 9 boys are County Basketball Champions following some outstanding performances at the recent County Championships.

Some tough games on paper were made to look easy with the team playing some inspirational basketball. Their best result came against Northampton School for Boys with a 67–39 victory. Huge congratulations to those involved.

The team:- Hayden Alcindor, Danny Clark, Ailbhe Cooper, Joseph Howie, Lukas Neviadomskis, Billy Olrod, Elvis Ringisai, Keenan Salmon, Daniel Sims and Tom Tomkins. Mr P Reynolds

National Cup basketball U18 Boys V NSB

Weavers 72 – 68 NSB

Weavers started off their 2012-13 U18 National Cup campaign with a home tie against Northampton School for Boys and it was a very tight game. The boys worked hard and with a few new additions to the team from the Post 16 team they were able to build upon the foundations from last year.

Also playing for the U18s were Keenan Salmon, Hayden Alcindor and Keiran Cox. It was another dominant display from Luke Lewis and Terrell Salmon that once again led to Weavers running out victorious.

The return leg is scheduled for after Christmas with a home and away leg also scheduled against The Gateway School from Leicestershire. Mr M Higgins

District Champions at U18 level

Weavers once again showed their dominance at district level by winning the U18 competition hosted at Weavers School.

The team shown below ran out winners against Wollaston and then beat Wrenn in the final game by 4 points at 24-28 in the 10 minute running clock game.

It was refreshing to see a number of squad players getting their chance to shine and everyone played an important role in the victory. Well done boys. Mr M Higgins

Wellingborough and East Northants District Cross

Country

On a frightfully cold afternoon in late November we took 24 confident young runners from Years 7-10 to Croyland Park for the Wellingborough and East Northants District Cross Country.

The students were exceptionally well behaved and a credit to themselves and the school. There were some exceptional performances specifically in the younger age groups and special mentions go to Mia Hopkins who came 1st in the Year 7 girls race and Jake Garner (4th) and Luke Costello (6th) in the Year 7 boys race.

Every athlete completed the course with the majority finishing in the top 20 and all athletes in the top 15 will be selected to race in the Northants Cross Country due to take place in January. Well done. Mr M Higgins

Round One Update

Team Round One (Yasmine Burton, Shannon Unsworth, Megan Churchill, Kate Nelson and Eden Rochester), with support from the Police, gave out over 3,000 T-shirts at Northampton University Fresher's fair to make students aware of low level violence in Northampton.

The girls also visited Wellingborough Police Station to experience first hand what a police cell is really like. This Christmas on 22 December the Northampton Town Football Club will be supporting the One Punch campaign by wearing the T-shirts during the warm up.

Dear Parents and Carers December 2012

Firstly, may I wish you all a very happy Christmas. Whatever you are doing over the break, I hope that you find the opportunity to spend some quality time together with your family.

It’s been a busy term, full of events, activities, lessons and learning. As we have updated our assessment software you will have seen that we have upgraded our ‘GREAT’ reports by colour coding students’ achievements against the good progress that we are setting out to achieve. This has clearly had impact and it has been very encouraging to see an increase in the number of conversations between school and home about how we as teachers and you as parents can work together to encourage and support better progress where it is needed. With the next GREAT report you will receive a new ‘Guide to GREAT’ which will help explain in more detail.

As you know, Ofsted visited us very recently. The report is available to read or download from the Ofsted website. Thank you to those of you who took the opportunity to complete the Parent view questionnaire. One of the main focus areas for Ofsted inspection is the accuracy our own self-evaluation against the Ofsted inspection framework criteria. We know that we have more work to do in order to be consistently good in all aspects of school life. This is what we told Ofsted and this is what they reflected back to us. The report rightly points out that our drive for academic improvement has resulted in our best examination results (ever) in 2012, that we are committed to permanent solutions and not ‘quick fixes’, that staff and students share collective pride in the school, that our pastoral support systems are a strength and that spiritual, social, moral and cultural development is good, supporting our ‘respect’ agenda and helping us celebrate diversity. The report sits well against our English subject inspection report from May.

Actions are already in place to address our weaker areas and we look forward to demonstrating, at the next inspection, that we are good, hopefully with outstanding features.

Tonga’uiha Shoebox Appeal

Students and Staff from Weavers School entered into the spirit of Christmas early this year by supporting Northampton Saints Player Soane Tonga’uiha’s Shoebox Appeal for Primary Schools in Tonga. A quote from his website www.tinytestimonial.com read ‘I am asking the Northampton community which has shown me such warmth, and support during my time at the Saints, to extend this to the children of my home village in Tonga’.

Students and Staff have been collecting small gifts to put in the shoeboxes, items included stationery, books, toys, wash items etc. Sixth Form students also held some fund raising events so they could buy new items to fill the shoeboxes. Local firms NPS shoes, Dr Martens and Barkers generously donated shoeboxes.

Students who spent spare time filling the boxes were excited to meet Soane Tonga’uiha himself when he came to Weavers to say thank you and collect the fantastic amount of 106 boxes. Further information can be found on his website and the boxes are not being shipped until early next year so further donations can be made.

No one will know you have registered and it will not affect any other benefits you are claiming.

The Government is giving money to schools to help children from lower income families do their very best.

This funding is called a ‘Pupil Premium’.

For every child registered for Free School Meals, the school gets £488 extra funding.

The Unforgotten Coat by Frank Cottrell Boyce

The novel is based on the true story of a young girl who the author met on a primary school visit called Misheel being deported to Mongolia .

The writer collaborated with Danny Boyle on the Olympics Opening Ceremony and his contribution included the Queen and James Bond parachute sequence, Mary Poppins’ duel with Voldemort and children bouncing on hospital beds.

His book was written for charity and 50,000 copies were given away by the Liverpool based Readers Organisation.

WEAVERS SCHOOL

At Weavers School we are constantly striving to move the school forward to raise achievement. Staff and students share a collective pride in what the school is doing to ensure a good education for all.

After Christmas we will be introducing a Pastoral detention which will run alongside the current detention system. Detentions will be issued by the Pastoral team for failure to meet S4S around the school. As the detention is issued the students will be given a card informing them of the detention the next day, which they should bring home to you. In addition, a phone call will be made to inform you that a detention has been issued and the reasons for it. These detentions will be until 4.00 pm and students will be expected to complete work from a range of subjects.

In rare cases we have had students who have failed to attend detentions and if this happens we will contact home to inform you of this and re-arrange the date.

I am always grateful for your support as we introduce these new systems and know you recognise that as we embed these detentions I expect to see a rapid decrease in the numbers as students respond to S4S and strive to achieve and attain their targets and S4S in all areas of school life.
