dawn of understanding. Getting lost brings out the stillness. Getting lost helps us find what our inner GPS is capable of. Getting lost is a valuable experience for our next journey. And there is the reward to be able to proclaim, "I was lost but now am found". May every curve in your path lead you to exciting new ways to find your best destination, and you arrive victorious!

THE PATH?

When we set out on a journey, we equip ourselves with directional enhancers...maps, a GPS, written instructions...sailors and explorers followed the stars...in other words, we take extra measures to avoid getting lost. We make plans to reach our intended destination without making any wrong turns. We take similar precautions with our journey of life. We look for a path that we believe will lead us to all those things that bring us success, pride, achievement and happiness. But, no matter how well we think we have prepared for our trip down our life's path, sooner or later we will most certainly find ourselves lost. There does not seem to be any amount of solid planning that will guarantee we will never experience those dark times when we find ourselves in unexpected and unfamiliar territory. Where did we make a wrong turn? Didn't we have a solid plan, maybe even a great plan? Good things were happening...we were successful, we were rewarded for our accomplishments, and we were full of confidence. Then one day just around the corner or out of nowhere, we were blindsided by something totally unexpected and certainly not in our plan. Something so unthought of that we had no idea which way to turn or what direction to take. I've learned that those blue skies and fluffy happy clouds are wonderful to claim and enjoy and they keep us on the good path in the light of day. But, it's how we manage those dark times in the night of life that really determines our happiness. When we hear that inner voice instruct us to "recalculate", it is best to listen. We are all on our selected path...we are finding our way, but we do get off track...we get lost. Alas, there is always a way out of the forest. We might have to stand still for a while...and wait for the

Dear Friends and Neighbors: Welcome to the summer months. I hope that you all have had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend as we joined together with family and friends to enjoy the three day weekend while remembering those who made the supreme sacrifice to ensure our freedom. Good news, if you follow my monthly articles, my orioles finally arrived as did my two hummingbird families. They are now regulars at the feeders in my yard and at times in competition with other birds for my offerings. I am so happy they all have returned. I am sad to share with you the news that the Police Chief for Platte Woods, Michael Joseph Benne, aged 63, passed away last month. He was well known and respected in the law enforcement community and a good friend to both Weatherby Lake and our Chief of Police Gary McMullin. In fact, at the service for Chief Benne, Gary was asked by the family to deliver a eulogy and be a part of the pall bearer team. Also, I would like to extend my appreciation to the members of the Weatherby Lake Police Department who stood honor guard at his viewing. May he rest in peace. Got leftovers from the City-wide Garage Sale? On Saturday, June 3rd from 2 – 6pm the Support Weatherby’s Adopted Troops (SWAT) group has engaged the Disabled American Vets (DAV) in support of the Red Racks Thrift Stores to have a trailer parked across the street from Birmingham Park to take your white elephant items. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept every item. Please stop by City Hall to get your balloons and a copy of the flyer listing items they will accept. All items are tax-deductible and all donations stay local, benefitting the disable vets in the greater Kansas City area. Weatherby Lake will again be hosting our annual fireworks display on Tuesday, July 4th. (Rain date is Wednesday, July 5th) As you may be aware, the cost of the fireworks are offset by donations from our residents. If you would like to make a donation, please stop by City Hall. Please keep in mind that school is now out for the summer so please drive safely. I like to close with some inspiring words and this month, a little humor from Slim Acres is added: "Roses are red, Violets are blue; But they don't get around Like the dandelions do." Have a great beginning to summer and live life well in Weatherby Lake.

THEFTS Weatherby Lake is a wonderful place to live and play. Unfortunately, we sometimes fall victim to thieves who prowl our streets looking for something to steal. Please remove or secure items on your boat. We lose fuel tanks, batteries and fishing gear every year. Keep your garage door closed if you are not in the area. Thieves watch for unattended lawn mowers, weed eaters and leaf blowers. Lock your vehicles and don’t leave items in the vehicle that may be seen from the outside. Thefts from vehicles do occur in our area. Please deposit all outgoing mail in a U.S.P.S. receptacle. Outgoing mail and incoming mail is stolen for money and information. SCAMS (Still) Don’t be the victim of a scam. Different scams are being attempted in the area at this time, please be cautious and alert. If you receive a call that a relative is in jail out of town and wants you to send them bond money, check it out because it is probably a scam. If you are asked to receive packages at your home or business and mail them to someone else in another country, be careful, it is probably a scam. If you receive notification you have won a foreign lottery and all you have to do to receive your money is wire or mail a small amount for taxes and fees to claim your prize it is probably a scam. No legitimate lottery should ask you for money to claim your prize. The IRS does not normally telephone you with a prerecorded message to contact them before they assess a penalty for your taxes. Please call the police if you receive any offers you believe may be a scam. ON STREET PARKING Parking on city streets is not uncommon in our city. It is sometimes necessary to accommodate guests or when using access areas. Weatherby Lake Ordinance requires that no person shall park any vehicle upon a street in a manner as to leave available less than ten (10) feet of width of the roadway for free movement of vehicular traffic. You may not park in front of a public or private driveway, within thirty (30) feet of an intersection or within fifteen (15) feet of a fire hydrant. The parking laws become even more important with the increased vehicular traffic in the City due to summer lake usage. Improper parking impedes the safe passage of vehicles and limits some property owner’s safe use of their driveway. Please observe our parking laws, park in a safe courteous manner and help make Weatherby Lake a safer place to live and drive. TALL WEEDS AND GRASS Every year the City receives complaints of yards that need mowing. Weatherby Lake Ordinance No. 215.030 states: Failure to keep weeds, high grass and other vegetation cut and removed a

nuisance. Whenever such weeds, high grass or other vegetation shall attain the height of eight (8) inches, it shall be deemed a public nuisance. The word “Weeds”, as used herein, shall be held to include all vegetable growths except cultivated plants, trees and shrubs. Help keep our City beautiful by taking care of your yards and lots. DRIVER SAFETY Driving in the oncoming lane of traffic is dangerous, even if you are only picking up your mail. Weatherby Lake City Ordinance 340.170 states: Upon all public roads or highways of sufficient width, a vehicle shall be driven upon the right-half of the roadway. Please refrain from driving in the on-coming lane of traffic to access your mail box. WATER SAFETY Please make yourself, your family and your guests familiar with the Weatherby Lake Improvement Company rules and regulations regarding water safety and usage of Improvement Company property. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Have a safe and enjoyable summer. City stickers became delinquent March 31. Check out NIXLE on the City web site. It is a great information tool for you but you must sign up for the service. Help prevent crime in your neighborhood. If you see or hear anything suspicious, please Call 911 immediately.

W.L.I.C. Update

Initial Observations of the WLIC Intern

Well, it was a long and dirty first week of work for me here at the WLIC. I don’t know why I expected any different from a job where the dress code is, for me at least, athletic and able to get dirty. The first day was by far the easiest even though Monday, especially Board Meeting Mondays, are supposedly the busiest of days at the WLIC. All I really had to due Monday was take the grand tour of the

office, city hall, and the lake and its access points. Later that day was the May meeting of the Board which I was requested to attend. The meeting was roughly two hours long and as you would expect really just consists of the board discussing the business and issues facing the lake. Besides just listening to the meeting my only interaction was in my introduction to the board. Mr. Neece decided to put my resume in the board packets which I found embarrassing, but ultimately got me a fair number of compliments. Tuesday began the truly nitty gritty work and so far my most productive day. We took to the lake to place a brand new buoy in C Cove and to refit the current C Cove buoy with a new “No Wake” sticker. If this process didn’t get me covered in grime already, then removing the sunken Zodiac from the North Cove definitely finished the job. Nothing is heavier on a lake than water and a pontoon full of water is about a heavy as I want to deal with. Luckily with the help of the fantastic, bombastic Hank Nussbeck and his truck we hauled the remains of the boat out.

Now I’m going to college for a lot of reasons, but the main one is to get a degree in Biochemistry and so my favorite thing to do this last week was to conduct the weekly testing of the lake. The process of testing the water is probably boring to describe, so I won’t, but the end result is that the lake is looking very clean. Clean due to the work of the WLIC’s recently built berms and check dams. Thursday was the day that an interactive Zebra Mussels Map that I built for both residents and the office went up on the WLIC website. The map shows all of the places that zebra mussels have infested waters in both Missouri and Kansas. This has already been helpful in determining if a used boat that a

resident is looking to purchase may have been contaminated. Additionally on Thursday, we replaced the buoy we refitted on Tuesday back into W1 Cove. It stormed a lot Thursday night, a “gully washer”, as one of my coworkers called it. After any big rain event we go check the check dams and, more importantly, lake for debris. At the end of North Cove all the debris seem to collect from 2 by 4’s to hay bales to QT cups. I thought there was a huge amount of stuff, but was informed that it was actually down a lot from last year, decreased again due to the check dams. We documented the debris, the state of check dams, and the nearby Rush Creek watershed. After returning to the office I had the pleasure of stuffing all of the mailed dock inspection violations, not a fun job for anybody.

I’ve already learned a lot in my first week of work, mainly that the WLIC does a crazy amount of work with the help of a crazy dedicated staff and an even more crazily dedicated volunteers. I probably used crazy and variations of that too many times but these people, now me included, are what keeps the lake running ship shape and are worth to this community more than their weight in gold. Even right now as I wrap this up several of them and myself are about to go remove logs that washed in on Thursday. Well if you read this whole long winded account, thank you and don’t forget to let the WLIC know that you appreciate them as well.

CONGRATULATIONS JOHN BUGG – HONOR FLIGHT RECIPIENT

On May 18, 2017 I was chosen to go on the prestigious Honor Flight for veterans who have served their county.

Honor Flight Network KC does whatever it takes to fulfill the dreams of veterans. Most importantly, our heroes travel absolutely free. Top priority is given to the senior veterans; WWII survivors, along with those veterans that may be terminally ill. Volunteers pay their own expense and assist the veterans on the Honor Flight KC trips. Honor Flight first took off in May 2005 and has had 30 flights since then. This group included WW II Veterans, Korean Veterans and Vietnam Veterans.

The Honor Flight recipients are required to have a guardian with them at all times on the trip to Washington, D.C. My guardian for this trip was Jerre Robertson, a close friend and Member of Daughters of the American Revolution. The veterans are treated with great respect and honor and are greeted at every memorial we visited by crowds and fanfare. We were escorted through Washington by a police escort from the airport and to each war memorial. Many of the veterans are in wheelchairs and are pushed around by their guardian. The memorials we got to visit included the WW II, Vietnam, Korean, Arlington National Cemetery and Tomb of Unknown Soldier, Air Force, Lincoln, and Iwo Jima. On the return flight from Reagan airport to KCI the veterans received a packet of letters at “mail Call” which included letters from family, friends and students. This was a very emotional time for all of us.

We flew to Washington on a chartered flight that left KCI around 6:30 A.M. and was supposed to return by 9:30 P.M., but due to storms we arrived around 12:30 A.M. The veterans were greeted at the airport by a huge crowd of civilians, veterans, Color Guards, Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution.

I served in the US Navy from February 1963 through February 1967. I went to boot camp in San Diego, California and from boot camp I went to Communication Technician school in Pensacola, Florida.

My first duty station was in Kami Seya, Japan where I spent 26 months. My job Navy rate was a Crypto logic Technician Radio Third Class Petty Officer with top secret clearance. My last duty station was in the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam aboard the USS Oxford. While I was on board the “OX” I was able to travel and see the exotic ports of Bangkok, Thailand; Singapore; Kaohsuing, Taiwan; Taipei, Taiwan; Manila, Philippines; Subic Bay, Philippines; Da Nang, Vietnam and Hong Kong.

Happy Summer!

The Irish American Club’s main function is to support our WL Police Department through our annual fundraiser.

Now that summer is here, we would like emphasize the importance of boating safety.

If you are inexperienced with boating and boat safety, please learn the WLIC’s boating rules before operating a boat.

Although pontoons seem harmless, accidents can occur, so please operate your motorized boat at least 100 feet from shore to avoid injuring swimmers.

Keep in mind that most of our rules, such as lighting specifications, are universal to all boats on all bodies of water, because the red/green configuration on the bow (front) and the white 360˚ light on the stern (rear) help other boats determine your distance and direction so they can avoid collisions with you. Docking lights (the two white lights on the “front” of the boat) are not “headlights” … they are used only when docking the boat, otherwise they impair the vision of other boaters when viewed from head on.

Although our WL Boat Patrol are technically not “Police”, they are trained in water safety and are doing their job to keep the lake safe, so thank you for showing them courtesy and appreciation for their efforts.

Have a fun and safe summer, and we hope to see you at the Lake Kickoff on June 11!

Next Meeting June 7th – C-Point

The Longevity Club had a great turn out for Basic Boot Camp in May. Joy Grogan did a great job of leading us in a fun night. If you were able to join us, thank you. Zumba will be our next class with instruction by Beth Tidwell from the YMCA. Be sure to put it in your phone calendar to join us on Wednesday, June 7th, 7 pm at C-Point. Zumba is a dance work out that incorporates different music and dance styles from all over the world with an emphasis on Latin-based rhythms. It’s a fun class that anyone can do, even if you have two left feet. Come shake your hips for a fun evening on June 7th. Weekly kayaking will begin on Monday, June 5th at 6:30 pm. We’ll plan to gather up on the lake by Venita ramp which is across from C-Point. You don’t need to be a member of Longevity to join us for kayaking as all are welcome! If raining or too windy we’ll regroup for the next Monday. Hope you’ll join us and not miss out on the upcoming monthly Longevity Gatherings. All will be held at C-Point at 7 pm. Cost is $5 but there is no charge if you are a member. Membership is $10 for the year.
