PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

New Text Alert SystemBeginning October 1, Emory Alliance Credit

Union will be moving to a new, fraud-detecting text alert system for debit cards. The text alert feature automatically notifies members

via text message when a transaction is flagged as suspect, making it even quicker and easier for the member to confirm whether or not the transaction is legitimate.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

b When a suspicious transaction is identified on your debit card, you will receive a fraud alert text message on your mobile device*.

b Follow the instructions to reply to the text and confirm if the transaction is valid or not.

b If you reply to the text confirming that the transaction is not valid, you will receive another text asking you to call the Fiserv Risk Team at 877-253-8964 to report the fraudulent transaction and close the card. A block will be placed on your debit card to protect it from further fraudulent transactions until you call the number above.

b If you reply to the text confirming that the transaction is valid, your debit card will remain available for use.

* EACU does not charge a fee for the fraud text alert service; however, standard text message and data charges may apply. If you are unsure about your mobile carrier’s rates, please contact your service provider.

BENEFITTING CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE OF ATLANTAMiracle Jeans Day Recap On Wednesday, Sept. 12, credit unions around the country “dressed down” to show

their support for sick kids in their area. The annual Credit Unions for Kids Miracle Jeans Day event encouraged credit union employees to donate $5 for the opportunity to wear jeans to work that day.

Emory Alliance Credit Union Employees came out in force, donating $5 and wearing their jeans in support of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Credit unions traditionally raise the most of any Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals corporate partner, and like all CMN Hospitals donations, funds raised locally will stay in the community. The funds support each hospital’s greatest needs, which include life-saving research, treatments, equipment, and charitable care. The funds raised help sick children and their parents navigate some very difficult days.

Break the Payday Loan Cycle

1. Attack high-interest debt first

If your debt is spread across multiple accounts, write down what you owe and focus on the ones with the highest interest. Your payday loans will probably be at the top of the list. Now that you know which debt is costing you the most, you can put more money into paying it off first.

2. Ask about an Extended Payment Plan

Many payday loan lenders belong to the Community Financial Services Association of America (CFSA), and allow borrowers to enter into an Extended Payment Plan (EPP). Under this plan, you get more time to repay your loan without being subject to additional fees or interest.

So find out if your lender is a member of the CFSA, and if you need it, apply for the Extended Plan by contacting them.

3. Seek credit counseling If a Repayment Plan is not available to you, you may want to seek help from a credit counseling agency such as BALANCE (800-777-7526). A professional counselor can offer suggestions and strategies on how to best attack your payday loans and other debt. But be careful of scams. Never pay high fees to an agency that makes too-good-to-be-true offers.

4. Explore other payback options

Finally, you can try paying off your debt by applying for another low-interest loan. Of course, this is a last resort since, while you’re eliminating one loan, you’re adding another.

But trading loans isn’t always a bad solution. Certain credit unions offer payday alternative loans (or PALs), which are less expensive and give you a longer repayment period. You can also ask your family or friends for help, or perhaps turn to your church or religious community.

When you take out payday loans, it’s easy to fall into a trap. While they are convenient, these loans charge exorbitant interest rates. (According to one study, typical interest ran as high as 381 percent APR.)

Pretty soon, you have to take out another loan to pay off the money you owe from the one before it, and so on. But if you’re stuck in the payday loan cycle, you should know that it doesn’t have to be permanent. As an alternative, try these tips to achieve financial relief:

If you find yourself taking out one payday loan after another, it’s time to break the cycle. Otherwise you may be

stuck paying them off for a very long time.

DON’T GET STUCK IN ITS TRAP!
