Visible defects lower brand quality perception and reduce the useful lifecycle of fabrics

Visible pills on the surface of textile products affect their visual appearance and comfort, which leads to a negative perception of product and brand qual-ity – particularly if the defects occur shortly after purchase. This can cause products to be discarded prematurely due to unsightly appearance, reducing the useful product lifecycle and increas-ing the environmental impact.

Textiles face many mechanical challenges

Abrasion is a mechanical motion that leads to rubbing and wear fatigue of fabric structures. Pilling and fuzzing is the abrasion process of forming visible surface defects consisting of entangled fiber clusters (‘pills’).

HeiQ No Fuzz provides targeted fabric reinforcement HeiQ No Fuzz uses adhesive polymer structures to provide targeted rein-forcement of fabric yarns. The adhesive action of the polymer structures builds bridges between yarns and constituent fibers. This localized reinforcing effect inhibits pill formation and growth and the abrasive removal of staple fibers.

The HeiQ No Fuzz product family enables control of where the reinforce-ment action occurs – e.g. distributed homogeneously throughout the yarn structure or localized to the external surface of yarns. This tailoring of the

reinforcing action provides a high level of flexibility to balance improved resilience towards pilling and abrasion while giving a lower level of mechanical handle impact.

Striking the right balance with HeiQ No Fuzz

The central challenge of achieving improved resilience towards fuzzing, pilling and abrasion effects in general, is in striking the right balance between improv-ing the physical resilience of the fabric while minimizing negative impact on desirable handle and comfort properties. The innovation effort towards HeiQ No Fuzz was motivated by the need to reimagine how to achieve this balance.

Conventional finishing treatment technologies such as polyurethane binders and silicic acids generally require high dosing levels that can give severe impact on handle properties. In contrast, HeiQ No Fuzz is based on innovative adhesive polymer structures that give targeted, localized and non-homogeneous rein-forcement inside yarns and/or on the outer surface of yarns.
