1. Introduction Theobjectiveofthistestistoevaluatetheseverityofabrasionoftheinsideofcompositecasingbydrillpipetooljointsinatypicalverticalwellandtodeterminewhetherdrillpipeprotectorsarerequiredasmitigationduringprolongeddrillingperiods.Theconceptofthistestistorotateadrillpipetooljointatrepresentativeconditionsinsideacompositetestpipe.Thetooljointispressedlaterallyagainstthecompositepipewithanadjustableforce,inawaythattheforceisdistributedevenlyoverthecompositepipewall.Thetestparameterswerecalculatedtomatchtheapproximateconditionsinaverticalwellwithashallowpronounceddogleginthecompositecasing,forcingthedrillstringsidewayswithasideforce.Asimplewaterbasedmudwascirculatedthroughthetestsetupbothwithandwithoutsand,representingabrasivecuttings,tounderstandtheeffectthishasonwearrate.

2. Test Parameters Sideforceandtestdurationhavebeencalculatedtomatchthefollowingsituation:
• A1000mverticalwellwith95/8”HSCCinstalledfrom0mto500mand500mofsteelcasingbelow;
• Drillingouttheshoeat1000manddrillingto1500mwithanaverageROPof10m/hr;
• 5”19#Drillpipeand8tonBHArotatingat86RPMin1200kg/m3mud;• Doglegpresentat200mdepthinthe95/8”casingofrespectively1,2and3
degrees,focussingwearinthisarea.InAppendixAthecalculationofsideforceandtestdurationisprovided.Testparametersweretakenasfollows:
• Drillpiperotationspeed86RPM• Sideforce3.6,7.2and10.8kN• Feedrate0.15mm/rev(about1m/hrROPequivalent,forpracticalreasons)• Circulatingfluid:
o water,bentonite(20lbs/bblor57kg/m3)o water,bentonite(20lbs/bblor57kg/m3)and5wt%coarsesand.

3. Test Method and Equipment Thetestisconductedona4mlathe,onthebedofwhicha1.5mlongHSCCcasingpipeisinstalledandadrillpipethatcouldberotatedinsidethecasing.Foravailabilityreasonsa10.6”HSCCpipewasusedforthetestinsteadofa95/8”pipe.Nonegatingeffectsareexpectedfromusingalargerdiameterpipe.Thenon-rotatingcasingismovedaxiallyandcanbepressedagainstthedrillpipetooljointwithanadjustableforce.Thedrillpipehas5”diameterwithNC50tooljointswithanODof170mmandstandardhardfacing.Seepicturesbelow.Thesetupincludesacircuittocirculateabasicdrillingfluidoverthecontactareabetweenthehardfacingandtheinnerwallofthecasing.Thebatch-mixedfluidiscirculatedinawayandataratetoprovideconstantandamplefloodingofthecontactarea.Duringthetests,thedrillpipewasrotatedat86RPMandthecompositecasingsamplewasmovedintheaxialdirectionduringthetestatarateof0.15mmperrevolution.Atthepointwherethehard-bandingwasexitingthecasing,theaxialmovementwasreversed.

ProcedureforTestingTherelevantpointsofthetestingprocedureareasfollows:
• Measurethedrillpipe;• Preparethecirculatingfluidandinstallandmarkthetestnumberthecasing
sample;• Startcirculationofthefluidthroughthecasingsample,ensuringthatthecontact
areaiswellflooded;• StartrotationofthedrillpipeatthedefinedRPM;• Applythedefinedamountofthesideforcetothebyregulatingthehydraulic
pressureonthejacks;• Startthefeedmovementofthelathe(axialmovementofthecasingsample);• Continuefeeduntilhardbandingexitsthecasing,thenreversefeed;• Continueuntilspecifiedtestdurationhaspassed,thenstopthelatheand
circulation;• Releasesideforce,movesampletonewposition;• Takepicturesoftheweargrooveanddocumentabnormalities;• Startthenexttest.
ProcedureforAssessingPerformance• Aftercompletingamaximumoffourtestspersample,removethecasingfromthe
lathe;• Cutthreeringsatspecifiedlocations:inthecenterand30cmfromtheedges(see
schematicbelow);• Calculatethewearbymeasuringonbothsidesofeachringthewallthicknesson
bothsidesofthegrooveandinthedeepestpartofthegroovewithacaliper;

4. Results Thesamplecasingswerecutintopiecesasperbelowschematicdrawing.Onbothsidesofeachringthevirginwallthicknesstotheleftandrightoftheweartrackweremeasuredandremainingwallthicknessinthedeepestpartoftheweartrack.Theresultswereaveragedoverthethreerings.

5. Conclusions Theresultsshowthatforthestudiedcaseofdrilling500mthroughaverticalsectionofcompositecasingwithinwhichanadversedoglegofupto3’ispresent,theweareffectofdrillpipegrindingontothecasingwallislighttomoderate.Wearratesapproximatelydoubledwhen5wt%sandwasaddedtothecirculatingfluid.Maximumaveragewearof0.6mmwaswitnessed.Aclosestudyofthewearpatternappearanceshowsthatinallcases,thewearhadnotpassedintothefiberlayerandremainedintheresin-richlayerontheIDofthepipe.
