Introduction The objective of this test is to evaluate the severity of abrasion of the inside of composite casing by drill pipe tool joints in a typical vertical well and to determine whether drill pipe protectors are required as mitigation during prolonged drilling periods. The concept of this test is to rotate a drill pipe tool joint at representative conditions inside a composite test pipe. The tool joint is pressed laterally against the composite pipe with an adjustable force, in a way that the force is distributed evenly over the composite pipe wall. The test parameters were calculated to match the approximate conditions in a vertical well with a shallow pronounced dogleg in the composite casing, forcing the drill string sideways with a side force. A simple water based mud was circulated through the test setup both with and without sand, representing abrasive cuttings, to understand the effect this has on wear rate.

1. • 5”19#Drillpipeand8tonBHArotatingat86RPMin1200kg/m3mud;• Doglegpresentat200mdepthinthe95/8”casingofrespectively1,2and3

degrees,focussingwearinthisarea.InAppendixAthecalculationofsideforceandtestdurationisprovided.Testparametersweretakenasfollows:

Test Method and Equipment Thetestisconductedona4mlathe,onthebedofwhicha1.5mlongHSCCcasingpipeisinstalledandadrillpipethatcouldberotatedinsidethecasing.Foravailabilityreasonsa10.6”HSCCpipewasusedforthetestinsteadofa95/8”pipe.Nonegatingeffectsareexpectedfromusingalargerdiameterpipe.Thenon-rotatingcasingismovedaxiallyandcanbepressedagainstthedrillpipetooljointwithanadjustableforce.Thedrillpipehas5”diameterwithNC50tooljointswithanODof170mmandstandardhardfacing.Seepicturesbelow.Thesetupincludesacircuittocirculateabasicdrillingfluidoverthecontactareabetweenthehardfacingandtheinnerwallofthecasing.Thebatch-mixedfluidiscirculatedinawayandataratetoprovideconstantandamplefloodingofthecontactarea.Duringthetests,thedrillpipewasrotatedat86RPMandthecompositecasingsamplewasmovedintheaxialdirectionduringthetestatarateof0.15mmperrevolution.Atthepointwherethehard-bandingwasexitingthecasing,theaxialmovementwasreversed.

4. Results Thesamplecasingswerecutintopiecesasperbelowschematicdrawing.Onbothsidesofeachringthevirginwallthicknesstotheleftandrightoftheweartrackweremeasuredandremainingwallthicknessinthedeepestpartoftheweartrack.Theresultswereaveragedoverthethreerings.

5. Conclusions Theresultsshowthatforthestudiedcaseofdrilling500mthroughaverticalsectionofcompositecasingwithinwhichanadversedoglegofupto3’ispresent,theweareffectofdrillpipegrindingontothecasingwallislighttomoderate.Wearratesapproximatelydoubledwhen5wt%sandwasaddedtothecirculatingfluid.Maximumaveragewearof0.6mmwaswitnessed.Aclosestudyofthewearpatternappearanceshowsthatinallcases,thewearhadnotpassedintothefiberlayerandremainedintheresin-richlayerontheIDofthepipe.
