    ABSTRACT

CAN A HEAVY DIVISION SUPPORT WEAPON SYSTEM REPLACEMENTOPERATIONS by Major Thomas J. Richardson, USA, 84 pages. The objective of this thesis is to determine whether a heavydivision can conduct weapon system replacement operations. The thesis is based on a scenario that takes place inEastern Europe. The division is a balanced MechanizedInfantry Division conducting a deliberate defense. The U.S. Army has limited works on the conduct of theoperation. The only time this type of operation has takenplace is during Desert Storm. The thesis incorporates thestructure, and lessons learned from the Desert Stormoperation. This information was gained by administering aquestionnaire to members of the operation. A copy of thequestionnaire results are included in the thesis. The analysis is based on the scenario, current and past U.S.Field Manuals, and the operation conducted in Desert Storm. The analysis demonstrates what is required for a division toconduct the operation. Five areas of the operation areanalyzed: Command and Control; Organizational Structure;Replacement Crew, Weapon System Link-up; Logistical Support;and Training. The conclusion is that a division can conduct weapon systemreplacement operations.
