WE WILL NEVER FORGET.NOVEMBER 14, 2020 • 50TH ANNUAL MEMORIAL SERVICE
In the middle of Huntington, West Virginia, there is a river.
Next to this river, there is a steel mill.
And next to the steel mill, there is a school.
In the middle of this school, there is a fountain.
Each year, on the exact same day, at the exact same hour...
...the water to this fountain is turned off.
And in this moment, once every year....
...time stands still.
On November 14th, 1970, Marshall University’s football team chartereda DC-9 jetliner for its return trip from Greenville, N.C., where the Thundering Herd had lost to East Carolina University earlier that afternoon. At 7:47 p.m., the plane, flying in rainy, windy conditions, clipped the tops of some trees just short of Tri-State Airport and crashed, killing all 75 people aboard. The victims included:

The Fountain
The 6,500-pound fountain stands 13 feet high and was designed and created by artist and sculptor Harry Bertoia. It was delivered to Marshall University in mid-October 1972 and presented to the Marshall community by President John G. Barker on November 12, 1972. The fountain, located on the Memorial Student Center plaza, is dedicated to those who died in the Marshall plane tragedy of November 14, 1970.
It is intended to convey, as in the sculptor’s words, “the living (rather than commemorating death) in the waters of life ... rising, renewing, reaching to express upward growth, immortality, and eternity.”

Marshall, gracious Alma Mater,
We thy name revere;
May each noble son and daughter
Cherish thine honor dear.
May thy lamp be ever bright
Guiding us to truth and light;
As a beacon o’er dark water
This is for thee our prayer.
May the years be kind to Marshall;
May she grow in fame;
May her children fail her never
True to her beacon flame.
May her spirit brave and strong
Honor right and conquer wrong;
This the burden of our song
Ever her truth proclaim.
