(Younis) SMS YOUR GRIEVANCES ON 9419089390 Tragedy Man dies of heart attack before house collapse KHALID GUL Shoul/Shamsipora, Sep 20: As the waters from Jehlum submerged these villages in south Kashmir’s Islamabad district on September, 7 Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh, 40, a cobbler by profession fear- ing that his house would col- lapse died of cardiac arrest. His apprehensions proved right as only four hours after he was buried the inundated house was raised to ground. Sheikh’s wife Shada had passed away only last year after suffering from protract- ed illness. He was toiling hard to feed his three kids which included her two daughters; Shoki, a class 8th student; Iqra, a class 7th student and his lone son Adil, a class 5th student. After our moth- er’s death our father did everything pos- sible to not let us feel the absence of our mother. He despite earning pea nuts met all our expens- es including education,” says Shoki with a choked voice as she and her two siblings clear the debris of the house. The death of Sheikh has shattered his kids and the loss of shel- ter has added to their woes. “We have no one to look after us except Allah,” says Shoki. She said that they are being provided food and shelter by the villagers. The villagers of Shoul who had gathered in the lawn of the Sheikh’s damaged house while recounting the horror said, “ It was really a dooms day for us. As the gushing water sub- merged our residential houses and we were moving to safer places we heard about the sudden death of Sheikh”. They said the villagers without caring for their lives and property rushed towards Sheikh’s house took away his dead body from the house and rescued his three kids too. “We immediately made prep- arations for his last rites and after offering funeral prayers amid rains and flood buried him immediately in the local graveyard,” said one of the villager Zahoor Ahmad Dar. Dar said that around 65 houses were damaged cattle washed away in the village and everybody was hit by flood in one or other way. “ Those whose houses stand lost agriculture land, their source of income,” said Dar adding despite all odds villagers see helping Sheikhs kids as their obligation. A few meters away Raja wife of Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, a cobbler by profession while resting on the rubble of her collapsed house is cook- ing her meals using clay made traditional Choola. “ All our belongings were washed by the devastating floods and we are left with nothing. I am using the utensils of my neighbors to cook food,” says Raja. Bashir, who is supporting his family consisting of her wife, three children and aged parents said that even he is left with any equipment to continue with his daily work. Another villager, Muha- mad Ashraf Dar a laborer by profession also lost his house, cowshed and cattle while all his paddy land was washed away by the floods. The villagers say that when the floods hit the area they took shelter in few houses which were compara- tively safe. “The flood water started to rise and we were trapped for four days. We could do nothing but to pray that the water recedes,” say the villagers adding that no one came to their rescue. In the adjacent Shamsi- pora village the devastation caused by floods is huge. More than 50 houses were completely damaged in this village all the paddy was washed away. Ghulam Mohi- uudin Dar, father of four daughter also lost his house. “ My house was reduced to rubble and all my belongings were buried under it. Even my cattle were washed away by the floods,” says Dar while col- lecting the broken wooden logs, doors and windows from the debris. Dar says that he along with his family is putting up in a tin shed. Muhamad Maqbool Tantray, a farmer, also lost his house in the flood. “I also lost all my belongings, cattle and paddy spread on 15 Kanals of agriculture land,” says Tantray. The villagers say that they did not get any help from government. “ Whatever help reached here was from locals of Islamabad district and students of AMU, JNU and Jamia,” says Mudasir, a postgraduate student of His- tory in IGNOU. We will come out of this grief: Geelani Srinagar, Sep 20: Reiterat- ing his appeal, chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Geelani on Saturday said that the devastation and destruction by recent floods is so huge that volunteers are working hard day and night, but still there are some people who are desperate and in need of basic necessities to sustain their life. A spokesman of Hurriyat (G) said the delegation headed by Altaf Ahmad Shah is on a day long visit to Islamabad to take stock of relief work and assess the damage done by recent floods. Teams from Cen- tral Relief Committee headed by Dr. Naseem Geelani visited many areas including Madina Colony, Alloochi Bagh and Bagander Nowgam where they distributed the relief mostly water, cooking oil, Biscuits, Rice, Milk etc. A medical team headed by Dr. G. M. Ganie also visited the flood hit town- ship of Pampora and besides providing medical relief to the victims, also educated them of preventive measures to avoid the spread of diseases especial- ly water born. Large number of public delegations visited Central Relief Committee headquarters at Hyderpora.
