Getting to know youScott Mills - Frank Marskell Award Winner

DIVE INTO REECEWE’VE GOT EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN A POOL

2013 saw Reece proudly sponsor the recent 106th Master Plumbing Gold Medal Training Awards, held on the 19th of June.

The primary purpose of these awards is to recognise outstanding achievement of young people who have excelled at various stages of their apprenticeships and during pre-apprenticeship studies relating to the plumbing industry. The awards aim to encourage young students and apprentices to further their interest and hone their skills in the wide variety of plumbing specialties.

Each year, an apprentice is selected for the Reece Frank Maskell Award which is awarded for excellence in sanitary plumbing. We had a chat with this year’s recipient, Scott Mills about his apprenticeship and what the future holds for him.

First up, congratulations on your win Scott. You must be stoked! What does winning the Reece Frank Maskell Award mean to you?

Thanks! I guess it’s just nice to be recognised for all the hard work you do.

Let’s go back to the basics; what year are you in your apprenticeship and who do you work for?

I’m a fourth year apprentice and I work for David Mills Plumbing.

What does an average day look like in the life of a fourth year apprentice?

You never know what you’re going to get. We do all aspects of plumbing maintenance so there is no average day really.

Like any job there would be bits you love and bits you love less. Right?

I like the variety of the job because it keeps each day interesting; with new problems to solve every day. Not so fun is the extra licensing training at night school which eats up a lot of my spare time. I just wish there was an easier way of completing that bit!

You must have seen some interesting stuff on the job. What’s the weirdest or funniest thing you’ve experienced as an apprentice so far?

Once I turned up at a vacant property to find a squatter who’d made himself at home. He wasn’t too happy to see me. That was interesting.

What has been the most valuable thing you have learnt so far in your apprenticeship?

Definitely the little tips and tricks that you learn from people who’ve been in the game for a while. They help you solve a problem when otherwise you might’ve been totally stumped.

Reece would like to congratulate Scott on his win and wish him the absolute best for what will undoubtedly be a stellar plumbing career. Thanks Scott!

An outbreak of amebic dysentery occurred during the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, resulting in 1,704 cases of illness and 98 deaths. It was not something they ate.

They died because, without warning, Chicago’s pure drinking water had been polluted by faulty plumbing performed by unqualified and unlicensed persons. If advice and specific knowledge had have been sought from a licensed plumber, death and sickness could undoubtedly have been avoided. This poster came out shortly after the epidemic in an effort to promote safe and sanitary plumbing practices.

Australia hasn’t been without its own waterborne epidemics. Stretching from the 1890s until the early part of the twentieth century, an estimated 2000 people died in the Western Australian gold fields ‘Instant’ crowded tent towns, unsanitary conditions, and a limited fouled water supply combined with basic

health amenities, provided the perfect conditions for the spread of the disease. Its greatest impact was during the long, hot summer months.

In the early years of the epidemic, up to twenty percent of mostly healthy young men died. While the official number of recorded deaths from the disease was 2000, the actual number was likely far greater. An estimated ten times more people suffered from the disease but eventually made a full recovery. This was the largest episode of epidemic typhoid in Australia’s history.

There is no question that our health has improved spectacularly in the past century. We’ve overcome epidemics of cholera, typhoid and dysentery that in the past had wreaked havoc on entire populations. Obviously this largely happened as a result of leaps forward in medicine and medical science. But it has to be said, it’s also due to one of the world’s oldest trades – plumbers.

Thanks.

Did you say Borrie? There is no shortage of toilet related slang within the Australian vernacular. Backing one out, dropping the kids off at the pool, laying a cable and punishing the porcelain are just a handful of the linguistic gems we use to refer to this simple bodily function.

This month’s The Crack has seen us dusting off the history books to bring you a closer look at one of Australia’s favourite terms for the byproduct of the human body; the simple borrie. Ever wondered where the term Borrie came from? You probably haven’t but you’re about to find out…

Without Edwin Fullarton Borrie (1894-1968) Melburnians wouldn’t be enjoying the efficient and effective sewerage systems that they are today. Mr Borrie was a civil engineer and town planner born in Melbourne, integral in the planning of Melbourne’s drainage systems.

In 1924 the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works chose Borrie as its very first engineer of the growing city’s main drains. As chief engineer of sewerage (1929-50), he managed Melbourne’s ever-extending system and supervised the design of a sewage treatment plant at Braeside for the south-eastern suburbs.

Werribee’s Lake Borrie Wetlands owe their title to Mr Borrie. These wetlands are enjoyed by hundreds of species of birds each year including, (and most significantly) the Orange bellied Parrot.

So now you know.
