THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE OFFERING Representatives of the congregation bring the people's offerings to the Altar. During the singing of the hymn you are invited to make a financial offering to further God’s mission through the work of the church by placing a gift in the plate or by going to grace-memorial.org and clicking “donate”. Tax receipts are issued annually for gifts totaling $20 or more. Your financial gifts together with the bread and wine are brought forward and presented at the altar as a sign of thanksgiving to God from whom all blessings flow.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM I GIVE TO YOU A NEW COMMANDMENT Peter Nardone I give to you a new commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you. Ubi caritas est vera, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exsultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. [Where charity is true, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be glad in him. Let us fear and love the living God. And from a sincere heart let us love one another.] Amen.

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Presider The Gifts of God for the People of God.

MINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENT Share the gifts If you know the brokenness of life, then you have participated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If you desire to know the love of God that overcomes apathy, alienation, and despair, then you are invited to share in the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the common cup. If you wish the chalice bearer to dip the bread into the wine, please hold the bread before you. If you prefer to receive a blessing, please cross your arms over your chest.

The bread is gluten-free and vegan at the 10:00 am service. Grape juice is available by request. Please ask the Chalicebearer if you would prefer juice to wine.

11

Prayer and Laying On of Hands for Healing If you wish a particular prayer for yourself or for someone else, you are invited to go to the prayer station located to the right of the altar. Give your first name and share your prayer need, and the prayer team will quietly offer prayers. Anything you share is confidential.

Bring your appetite - and sign up to share your song, skit, joke, or interpretive dance number. We’ll conclude the evening by taking the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday and turning them into ash for Ash Wednesday.

You are invited to begin a holy Lent through the ancient practice of the imposition of ashes. Please join us February 26th at 12Noon in the chapel or 7pm in the Nave. Holly Puckett will preach.

Lenten meditations are a time-honored tradition of deepening the awareness of Jesus in our lives. This year, Grace is gathering up quotes, passages from favorite religious writings, hymn or other song lyrics, poetry, and other sources to put into a meditation booklet for all of us to use during Lent. It will be available at the Ash Wednesday. This wonderful booklet will have materials from each of the groups at Grace, as well as from individuals. We need 40 meditations! Any extras will be used in the Grace Notes, the Sunday bulletin, or posted about the parish. Here are the logistics:

1. Each group of the parish, as well as individuals, are asked to contribute 1-3 quotations or other materials (see above description). 2. Collection of this material begins immediately. 3. This notice is for everyone’s information, and there will be an additional email sent to the leaders of all the groups to help solicit the quotes, scripture verses, poems, lyrics, etc. 4. These will all be electronically submitted to Myra Clark ([email protected]) by Wednesday, Feb. 19th. a. Please send electronically if at all possible. If you don’t have email, you may submit your contribution in writing to the office and the staff will type it up for you. HOWEVER, this should not be your go-to method as our staff do so much and have so much to do. 5. Production will begin the week of February 23rd, with copying, collating and binding February 23rd – 25th. 6. Booklets will be ready for you at the Ash Wednesday service on February 26th.

We need 40 quotes. Don’t delay, start today!!

Join Reverend Jeanne and parishioner Tod Moquist for Holy Week Boot Camp! For 5 Sundays during Lent from 9-9;45 am (3/1, 3/8, 3/15, 3/22, and 3/29) we will be exploring the Passion of Jesus and the services of Holy Week.

The first 3 sessions will be spent discussing Amy-Jill Levine's brief and brilliant book Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner's Guide to Holy Week (copies are available for $16.99 with our friends at Broadway Books). On 3/22 we will be discussing Stations of the Cross and on 3/29 the Triduum liturgy (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil). Interested? Have questions? Please email Jeanne at [email protected] or chat with her or Tod.

14 The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany + February 16, 2020

Attention Ushers, Friday Feed volunteers and anyone else interested! Maybe you noticed the AED device (defibrillator) outside of the church office. As many folks as possible should know when and how to use it. Please attend the training session on March 1st at noon. Marie Escamilla from CPR Heart Savers will be in the Parish Hall demonstrating the proper use of the AED. Hope to see you there!

GRACE MEMORIAL & ST. PHILIP THE DEACON

Daniel W. Jones, Member of Vestry at Grace Memorial and The Rev. Maria McDowell, PhD, Rector of St. Philip the Deacon are partnering to begin a Pacific Northwest chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians. If you would like to learn more, kindly visit: ube.org.

The new chapter is expected to extend through the Dioceses of Oregon and Washington. The full invitation letter is viewable on the Diocesan website:

https://www.diocese-oregon.org/union-of-black-episcopalians-chapter-forming/

Many people aren’t familiar with the lengthy history of African-Americans in The Episcopal Church. The first black Episcopal priest, The Rev. Absalom Jones, was ordained in 1802. One of our primary goals is to study the historical contributions of African-Americans to the church, including early leadership on monumental issues that are dear to all Episcopalians. One-hour meetings will be held the second Monday of the month here in the parish hall at 7pm.

The first meeting is scheduled for March 9th. We encourage all who are interested to email: [email protected] to join the mailing list.

Parishioners are invited to join us for a weekend of fun, festivities and reflection at Camp Magruder. This is an experience for all ages. Go to http://www.campmagruder.org/ to see what Camp Magruder has to offer. Take part in the spirited community gatherings.

Woohoo! In a financially collaborative effort between Grace Church, Grace Institute and the Women of Grace (portion of Holiday Bazaar & Art Faire proceeds), the Sanctuary has new central air conditioning! This will be a welcome change in the spring through fall… especially for those wearing vestments and choir robes. Now we’ll all be cool in church this summer!

A pdf file of the bulletin is now available online. Go to Grace’s website: grace-memorial.org, click on Worship, then This Sunday at Grace. View previous bulletins there also.
