From the Desk of Father John The summer is here, school is out, and vacation plans are in the works. Remember to take time for church, living the Christian life and supporting your Parish whether you are at home or away. God Bless you all at this time to relax and rest. The readings from this weekend state: As they were going along the road, a man said to him “I will follow you wherever you go.” and Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of God has nowhere to lay his head.” Today, Jesus calls us to follow him as he makes his way towards Jerusalem, where the mystery of death and rebirth is to be accomplished. To follow him requires our wholehearted commitment to love. In the second reading, St. Paul tells the Galatians that they were called for freedom. Paul does not use freedom as an opportunity for self-gain, but rather to serve one another through love. Many people seem to have the idea that freedom is all about doing what you want. When I want, how I want…etc. This is not freedom, but license. License is selfish. This is opposite of love to which Paul exhorts us. We need to remember on this July 4th the true cost of freedom. The lesson from the Gospel of Luke that should strike all of us is the dedication on the part of his followers for his service. We cannot be for Christ and against him at the same time. Are we really following Christ in the 24/7 of our lives? Are our eyes always fixed on the future that awaits us? The person who is loyal earns an honest living, not only peacefully, but helpfully with ones brothers and sisters is living a true Christian life.

Our registration form and class schedules for the 2019-2020 Faith Formation Program is available now. Please check our website or email Marie Sullivan, our parish Faith Formation coordinator, at [email protected] with any questions or concerns. In September, we will schedule additional opportunities to register your child for the program.

J oin Us in September.

God, Coffee and Conversation is a drop in activity to discuss the Sunday Gospel of the day. We will be on break

during July and August and will resume in September. We will announce the date it resumes in this bulletin. We welcome all people to this discussion group. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend. You need not attend every week. It has been a great opportunity to discuss faith in a safe, confidential and friendly space. We hope you will put it on your calendar to join us when we resume in Sept.

Becoming Catholic You might know a friend, neighbor or family member who is interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. We have a program that be-gins in September and culminates in the receipt of the Sacraments at Easter Vigil. It is called the RCIA, the Rite of Christian Ini-tiation for Adults. You will find our approach is open, hos-pitable and meets people where they are in their spiritual journey. Our outlook is that Catholicism is not a theoretical system of beliefs; rather, it is a way of life. We teach people what we believe and we show them how to live as a Catholic. You as a community have a role in this because when some-one interested in becoming Catholic comes to Mass, you show them that Catholics are friendly, loving, caring and prayerful. You show them that Catholics collect food for those in need, we reach out to the homebound and our par-ish health care ministry assists people with free health screenings. These are just some of the ways we live the faith. Please contact Mary Campion for more information at RCIA at [email protected] or 617.323.4410x13.

I n today’s Gospel we see how Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, sent “messenger on ahead of Him.” To be the messengers of God, we must know

well what it is God wants to say and do through us, as he sends us out to bring his love to others. In the month of June, you were the “messenger of God” in bringing hope to the poor. Your gifts enabled the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to assist fourteen families, providing $3,724.52 for assistance with food, utility and rent bills .

Finance Council We are looking for qualified candidates to join our Finance Council. The parish Finance Council supports Father John in budgetary planning, to plan for our maintenance expenses as well as needed repairs. The Council meets several times throughout the year. Prospective candidates should have a business or finance background. For more information or if interested contact Steve Sullivan at 617-323-4410 ext 16.

Summer is Planning Time

There is a rhythm to parish life and we use the summer months to plan our parish calendar for September 2019- June 2020. This includes faith formation for our young people, adult activities such as Bible Study, community activities such as dinners and trips, special events and more. There is so much going on that we need to map it out month by month and make sure we get everything we want into the calendar with no conflicts. So, we sit down and pencil everything in onto a big paper calendar. If you have been thinking of something you would like to see happen at Saint John’s or perhaps some event you or you and a group of friends would like to make happen, please contact Mary Campion at [email protected]

Remembering Your Loved Ones Masses or Mass cards are always uplifting, especially in times of loss. To request a Mass or a Mass card, you can call ahead to speak with our administrative assistant and pick up the Mass card later. The Offering for a scheduled Mass or a Mass card where the Mass would be said later is $10. Inquire at the office about other opportunities such as the Sanctuary Candle or the Bread and Wine for Eucharist.

"Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come.

We have only today. Let us begin."“

Community Corner

This is a true community event where residents, local businesses, and farm fresh food come together in Adams Park on Saturdays throughout the summer and fall. Every season is full of new vendors, performers, and engaging children’s activities. The market is open from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm every Saturday, rain or shine, from June through November in Adams Park. There are free children’s activities and live music every week! For more information, visit the web site roslindale.net/farmersmarket/

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s gospel, Jesus says very clearly, “Follow me;” Those of us who gather each week at Mass probably consider ourselves followers of Jesus. But are we disciples? A disciple is a person who prays daily, recognizes the need for Confession, has put Christ at the center of her/his life, is generous with their time and treasure, serves the Church, and invites others to know Jesus better. If all this seems too difficult, pick one or two practices to focus on. Build your discipleship one step at a time.

Rest In Peace

We ask that you remember in prayers this week

Connie Dufresne & Jo Anne Towner

who has recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14
