Begin your study of biology this year by reading Chapter 1. It will serve as a reminder about biological concepts that you may have learned in an earlier course and give you an overview of what you will study this year.

In the overview, Figure 1.3 recalls many of the properties of life. Label the seven properties illustrated here, and give a different example of each.

Life is organized on many scales. Figure 1.4 zooms you in from viewing Earth from space all the way to the level of molecules. As you study this figure, write in a brief definition or draw an illustrative picture of each level. The text uses chlorophyll as the example of a molecule. Replace this with DNA in your description.

The theories that become widely adopted in science (such as the theory of adaptation by natural selection) explain many observations and are supported by a great deal of evidence.

In spite of the body of evidence supporting a widely accepted theory, scientists may have to modify or reject theories when new evidence is found.

· As an example, the five-kingdom theory of biological diversity was called into question as new molecular methods made it possible to test some of the hypotheses about the relationships among living organisms.
