NorthumberlandPlayersislive,local,andcommittedtobringingqualitytheatretothewholefamily.Inits39years,NorthumberlandPlayershaswonTheatreOntarioawardsforperformance,directing,musicandproduction.Theyalsohaveaveryactiveyoungpeople'stheatreprogramwhichperformsamajorchildren’sChristmasproductionandrunsdramacampsthroughoutthesummermonths.ACharlieBrownChristmaswasseenby2800childrenandtheirfamilies.NorthumberlandPlayersprovidesopportunitiesinallaspectsofqualitytheatre––over250enthusiastic,un-paidvolunteerswhoworkasactors,directors,producers,setbuilders,costumemakers,etc.,areproofthereispassionforlivetheatreinNorthumberlandCounty.Whenyouattendanot-for-profittheatrecompanyperformance,yourentertainmentdollarsstayinthecommunity,theculturalandeconomicbenefitsripplingthroughoutNorthumberlandCounty.WetrulysuppportBuyLocalNorthumberland.HomeforNorthumberlandPlayersisthehistoricSecondStreetFirehallinCobourg.ThebuildinghousesthePlayers'administrativeoffice,rehearsalspacesandaground-floortheatre.TheFirehallTheatreisanintimatevenuethatcanbearrangedinvariousconfigurationstopresentinnovativetheatre.NorthumberlandPlayersCostumeHouseatUnit4,450CampbellStreetinCobourg,isthehomeofthePlayers'vastcollectionofperiodandcontemporarycostumesavailableforrentalsfortheatricalandotherevents.NorthumberlandPlayersalsoleasesTheThirdSpaceonLoveshinRoadforsetstorageandconstruction.Over10,000peopleattendedourproductionslastyear.Wehopeevenmorepeoplewillseeourshows.BeaPlayer-Therearemanyroles!Wealsowelcomemembersandvolunteerstojoinusinproducingqualitytheatre.•MembershaveavoiceinNorthumberlandPlayers,avoteattheAnnualGeneralMeeting,andcanserveontheBoardofDirectors.Membershipfeesprovideon-goingsupportfortheadministrationofthePlayers.Membershipsare$25.AFamilyMembershipof$40includesspousesand,asnon-votingmembers,childrenandyouth.

TheSecretGardenisinmytopthreefavoritemusicals(IntotheWoodsandTheLast5Yearsbeingtheothertwo)sinceIdirecteditinthisverytheatrefifteenyearsago.Youmightbeinterestedtoknowthatseveralofthecast,crewandorchestrafromthe1995productionhaveenthusiasticallyjoinedustomountitagain!MeaghanMacDonald(Alice)wasourMaryLennoxwaybackwhen.Ithinkit'ssafetosaythattheysharemyloveofthebeautiful,hauntingmelodies,poeticlyricsandprofoundthemes.Themusicalisbasedonthe1911novelofthesamenamebyFrancesHodgsonBurnett.ItpremieredonBroadwayin1991andranfor709performances.Ifyouareunfamiliarwiththestory,MaryLennox,ayoungEnglishgirlbornandraisedintheBritishRaj,isorphanedbyacholeraoutbreakwhensheis11years-old.SheissentawayfromIndiatoYorkshire,England,tolivewithrelativeswhoshehasnevermet.ButMaryLennoxisnotalone.Sheissurroundedbytheghostsofherpast(referredtointheprogramasDreamers)andherlateAuntLilywhonottenyearsearlierleftahusbandandnewbornson.Herownpersonalityblossomsasshe,ayounggardenerandahousemaidbringnewlifetoaneglectedgarden,aswellastohersicklycousinandbereaveduncle.Directingthisshowwasfun.Itisalwaysexcitingwatchingyoungactorscomeintotheirownweekafterweek,Iamtremendouslyproudofwhattheyhaveachieved.Icouldn'tbehappiertobecollaboratingagainwiththetalentedpeoplewhohavemadeworkingontheseshowssuchapleasure.Thankyou,Marie,Alina,Leslee,Lauren,Ken,Barb....all.Now,enjoycomingintoourgarden.
