1960 - 1963Sit-ins, swim-ins, read-ins, pray-ins, marches, and other protests erupt across the South at segregated restaurants, swimming pools, libraries, churches...

June, 1964. Black children integrate the swimming pool of the Monson Motel. To force them out, the owner pours muriatic acid into the water.

St. Augustine, FL, police ensuring that the beach remains "White Only."

Nashville, TN. High-school students picketing a segregated restaurant. Their line is attacked by racists. The police club the demonstrators. A 15-year old girl lies unconscious in the street where she was beaten down, her sister kneels beside her.

Students busted for protesting segregation fill the Nashville jail to overflowing.

Police attack the marchers with tear gas and fire hoses, and force them into the "stockade."

A huge mob gathered, with open police support while the three of us sat there for three hours. I was attacked with fists, brass knuckles and the broken portions of glass sugar containers, and was burned with cigarettes. I'm covered with blood and we were all covered by salt, sugar, mustard, and various other things.

More than 1,000 students march in support of anti-segregation, sit-ins at downtown lunch counters.

Freedom Riders

Organized by CORE, two integrated groups of Freedom Riders enter Alabama on May 14, 1961. One bus is ambushed and burned by a racist mob outside of Anniston, the other arrives in Birmingham where another mob brutally assaults the riders.

In the deep south the KKK operates openly with the support of police and politicians. Parents bring their children to public Klan rallies to teach another generation the lessons of hate and bigotry.

Voter Registration

High school students under arrest for marching in support of voter registration, February, 1965. Sheriff Jim Clarke supervises their incarceration for crimes against the southern way of life. To prevent any

further marching, the police stretch a rope across Sylvan Street outside of Brown Chapel. It is guarded by a line of cops. Anyone marching past the rope faces arrest, a beating, or worse.

March from Selma to Montgomery 1965

The Selma Movement takes up the march to Jackson, Mississippi.

The March to Montgomery, Alabama. The March crosses Lowndes County, a stronghold of the Ku Klux Klan.

Population: 81% Black, 19% white. Voter registration: Blacks 0, whites 2240 (118%)
