Valencia High School Mrs. Burrill AP Statistics “We prepare students to meet the challenges of the future and to become responsible citizens through relevant learning communities, community involvement, innovative technology, and teamwork. Each student will develop

the knowledge, skills, and character necessary to succeed.” –VHS Vision Statement

Expected Schoolwide Learning Results

Course Information

Valencia High School expects students to be effective communicators who… …express themselves competently in written and oral form …utilize technology for communication

Dear Students and Parents: Statistics is the science of collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Statistics is probably one of the more applicable branches of mathematics. Applications of statistics show up daily in our lives. At least one statistics course is typically required for majors such as engineering, psychology, sociology, health science, and business (to name a few). We will cover four main topics in AP Statistics: Data Analysis, Data Collection, Probability, and Statistical Inference. This course will cover the California State Standards in Advanced Probability and Statistics.

Class Materials Valencia High School expects its students to be responsible citizens who… …are culturally aware and understand the importance of arts in society …behave in a manner that demonstrates respect for cultural diversity and individual differences …behave in ways that demonstrate an understanding of the character values that underlie society

An in class set of text will be provided during class, so students should take home their Textbook: The Practice of Statistics, 4th edition by Yates, Starnes, & Moore

Students should bring the following materials to every class: • TI-83, TI-84 (preferred), TI-89 graphing calculator, or TI-inspire • 3-ring binder (for notes/handouts) • paper • sharpened pencils • grading pen Attendance is important and is directly related to your success. To be successful, students need to be in class and on time each day. The school tardy policy and district attendance policy will be in effect in this class. Students are responsible for any work or activities completed in class as well as the homework given on the monthly calendar. Students have 1 school day to make-up an assignment due to an excused absence and tests must be made up immediately upon return. Students that miss a test review day should expect to take that test on the day of their return.

Grading Valencia High School expects its students to be healthy individuals who… …are physically fit …are aware of balanced nutrition and the correlation between an active lifestyle and good health

Percent Basis: Grading Scale: Tests, Quizzes, Projects

70% A: 90% -100% (Advanced) B: 80% - 89% (Proficient) C: 70% - 79% (Basic) D: 60% - 69% (Below Basic) F: Below 60% (Far Below Basic) *Please be aware that most universities will require that you earn at least a C second semester to ensure admission.

Homework

Valencia High School inspires its students to be critical and creative thinkers who… …demonstrate sound decision making skills …use higher order thinking skills to analyze and interpret information and solve problems …access, evaluate, analyze, and use information from a variety of resources to meet personal and curricular needs …are able to use mathematical concepts to solve both hypothetical and real-life situations

Students are assigned homework on a daily basis (HW assignments can be found on website calendar) which is due the following class period. Students must turn in their assignments and the chapter review, per unit, for a grade. These assignments will be checked for both completion and accuracy. Late assignments will not be accepted. Students that receive an 80% on a given unit will earn a curve for that unit’s test. This process is used to encourage students to not only complete all of the problems, but also check their answers and rework problems as needed, seeking help when appropriate. Missed homework, notes, etc. is the student’s responsibility. Students will be offered opportunities throughout the course to complete projects. Students are expected to work ethically and to model good character.

Final Exam I will give a semester final to everyone about 2 weeks before the AP exam. Any student who chooses not to take the AP exam will also take a cumulative final exam which will count for half of the “Final Exam” grade.

Expectations

Valencia High School encourages self directed learners who… …create short and long term educational goals …function effectively with technology …can work alone or in groups to achieve common goals …demonstrate learning in challenging subject matter …demonstrate an understanding of career opportunities and the role education plays in attaining career goals …demonstrate achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics across the curriculum

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT POLICY • Each student is to be in his/her seat before the tardy bell rings. • Each student is to be prepared for all and any class activity with a

pencil, paper, notebook, calculator, textbook, and any due assignments.

• Food is not allowed in the classroom, with the exception of water. • Each student is responsible for the area surrounding his/her desk

and will be expected to dispose of trash in an appropriate manner. • No talking when the teacher is teaching or giving instructions. • Cell phones and audio devices are NOT to be used during class.

Students should have all electronics turned off and put out of sight during a class period. Parents may contact their child through the office during class time.

• The overall rule in this classroom is “EVERY STUDENT HAS THE RIGHT TO LEARN AND EVERY TEACHER HAS THE RIGHT TO TEACH.” Valencia High School’s “Behavioral Standards” will be enforced in this class.

If a student is unable to follow the rules stated, the following steps and procedures will be taken:

1. Verbal reminder. 2. Student/teacher conference. 3. Parent contact. 4. Parent/teacher/counselor conference. 5. One-day suspension from class. 6. Two-day suspension from class.

Plagiarism/Academic Dishonesty

To plagiarize is to use and pass off (the ideas or writings of another) as one's own. This means that when you take credit for someone else’s ideas, thoughts or words, you are committing plagiarism. This does not just apply to the person stealing the information. If you allow someone to steal your ideas, thoughts or words, you are guilty of academic dishonesty as well. This includes but is not limited to copying homework, classwork, or projects that do not belong to you. Academic dishonesty can also occur when a student uses notes, or other materials, during an assessment, test, or quiz, when they were given explicit instructions not to do so. Any student who participates in any fashion, in any form of academic dishonesty will not only earn a zero on the assignment in question, but will face disciplinary action as well. At the very least, parents will be contacted, the student in question will receive a disciplinary referral to the office and they will be removed from National Honors Society (NHS) and California Scholarship Federation (CSF). The first offense is reported to the Assistant Principal and Counseling office and the second offense will be recorded on the student’s discipline file.

AP Exam Date The AP Statistics Exam will take place on Thursday, May 12, 2016 (noon). The cost of the exam is $92. Students will be expected to take the AP Exam since much of our class time will be devoted to preparing for it.

I look forward to working with you this semester. I am dedicated to helping you succeed. If you find that you need extra help, please don’t hesitate to ask.
