Baptism of the Lord January 11, 2015

Theme: Baptism gives us new life.

Breaking Open the Word: Suggested text for faith sharing: Gospel Mk 1-7-11 This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” It hap-pened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, de-scending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Step One: Listen to the Word: As you hear the story of Jesus being baptized, what line or word touches you? What lingers in your memory after hearing this amazing reading?

Step Two: Look into Your Life

Question for Children: Why does Baptism make you special?

Question for Youth: You were baptized as a mem-ber of the Christian community. What does it mean to you to belong to this community? How is it a support in your life?

Question for Adults: What meaning does your Baptism have for your everyday life?

When: Sunday, January 11, 2015 Time: 8AM Where: St. Ignatius New School Basement Help save a life by giving blood. Please call Doug Quinn at (516) 647-9252 with any questions. Start the New Year by giving blood. You never know, you might be saving a life.

Thank you to all our parishioners who have been very generous with their Christmas cards, gifts plus the delicious candy, cakes and cookies. Thanks again, and may God bless you in abundance.

Martha’s Guild Rosary Making The next session of Martha’s Guild Rosary Making will be Wednesday, January 7th from 3PM to 5PM in Room B of the Old School Cafeteria.

Page 3: We Pray For Our Dead And We Mourn With You

THE LIGHT OF FAITH The first reading today is charged with the glory of the Lord. Everyone who can come to the holy city does come—whole caravans of people of all ages on foot and on dromedaries and camels. This descrip-tion of an irresistible light-filled city prepares us for the story of the Magi. They are guided by their own lights—their study of astronomy and astrology—and by the light of a peculiar star. Their study tells them that an unusual event in the heavens is a sign of an extraordinary birth on earth. They mean to find out about this, and they set out with gifts worthy of a king. They are welcomed into an insignificant house in Bethlehem, offer gifts befitting a king, and receive the gift of faith. Paul reinforces the great gift of faith available to the Gentiles, whom the Magi represent. What they have seen has changed them, just as it changed Paul and all who heeded his proclamation. Like the Magi and like Paul, we are invited to receive this life that is filled with the light of faith.

HOW TO BEGIN THE NEW YEAR Pope Francis’ 10 Secrets to Happiness

We all want to be happy, and in our world today there are many people telling us how to achieve that goal. Yet, many of these paths to happiness are based on false promises or superficial suggestions that offer fleet-ing moments of pleasure and quickly fade away. The good news is that Pope Francis, who carries an aura of joy in everything he says and does, has now identified ten secrets to happiness that are time-tested and true. 1. Live and Let Live. Too many of us jeopardize our happiness by trying to control the lives of others. 2. Be Giving of Yourself to Others: Being open and generous with others-especially those in need-brings

us into an intimate encounter with Christ, who is the source of all joy. 3. Proceed Calmly: Happiness is jeopardized when our lives become hectic and out of control. 4. Develop a Healthy Sense of Leisure: We live in a secular world that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a

week. Leisure activities give our bodies and minds a chance to refresh and renew themselves. 5. Make Sunday a Holy Day: Pope Francis suggests that a surefire way to find happiness is to reclaim

Sunday as a holy day. He also suggests that Sunday should be a family day. 6. Create Jobs for Young People: We find purpose in our lives through meaningful work; we are en-

couraged to take that one step further and ensure that young people have what Pope Francis calls “dignified jobs.”

7. Respect and Take Care of Nature: We are the stewards of God’s creation, and we have a responsibil-ity to preserve and protect it-not just for ourselves, but for future generations-including clean air and water, wetlands and forests, and farm lands and natural resources.

8. Stop Being Negative: Constant complaining, biting criticism, backstabbing, and gossip are like poi-sons that kill happiness. The first step is awareness that being negative or positive is a personal choice. The second step is making a concerted effort to stop ourselves from negative thoughts and words as soon as possible.

9. Respect Others’ Beliefs: We all have family members, friends and acquaintances who do not share our Catholic Beliefs. Yet, nagging and pressuring will not bring happiness for anyone.

10. Work for Peace: We may not be able to bring about peace on a global scale, but we can pray for world peace. We can also work for peace in our homes, neighborhood, schools and places of employment.
