Roots
The evidence, research & strong partnerships which ground our work.
Food security is the “cornerstone” of healthy communities, as everyone has the right to access enough safe, nutritious food.
We need food systems that are Healthy, Just & Sustainable
Make Food Matter is an education & awareness strategy to support FoodARC partners in
building community food security across Nova Scotia by moving research to action.
The Food Action Research Centre, is a research centre based at Mount Saint Vincent University which emerged as the latest step in the evolution of many deep, cross-sectoral relationships & research activities working to better understand & build community food security in NS & beyond.
Healthy, just and sustainable food systems provide an opportunity to drive local economic prosperity, strengthen our
communities and support good health, for all Nova Scotians.

Voices for
Food Security in NS
The Time Is Ripe
We need a cross-government committee at provincial & municipal levels to develop & implement comprehensive policy options on issues of food security, specifically food access & affordability.
This is an action named in
Healthy people & ensures our children & future generations will grow up in supportive
environments
Thriving local economies with vibrant farms &
fishing communities
Inclusive communities with a strong social fabric
Access to enough affordable, nutritious and sustainably produced food contributes to…
of our food dollars currently support local producers, yet
is required to create “self-reliant” food systems.2
$$$$$$$$$$ 13%
$$$$$$$$$$ 50%
Nearly 1 in 5 households
