RESEARCH- SAFE AND CIVIL SCHOOLS
Chronic absenteeism is missing more than 10% of school for ANY reason
2 Days per month 4.5 days at 1st quarter 9 days at semester
Approximately 10% of kindergarten and 1st grade students miss a month or more of school.
Average Daily Attendance (ADA)
If a student is not attending regularly, schools cannot determine the effectiveness of academic or behavioral interventions or initiatives.
RESEARCH- WWW.ATTENDANCEWORKS.ORG
Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school
The academic impact of missing that much school is the same whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Suspensions also add to lost time in the classroom.
Low-income students are four times more likely to be chronically absent than others often for reasons beyond their control, such as unstable housing, unreliable transportation and a lack of access to health care.
WHY ARE THEY ABSENT?

WEEKLY MONITORING- ATTENDANCE MATTERSCOUNSELORS, ATTENDANCE CLERK, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, ICM
SMART Goal: Decrease chronic absences (18+) to under 8%. [10% last year]
Meeting goals:
-Discussion of particular students of concerns
-Provide background info on students receiving (or not receiving) letters as needed
-Review students needing attendance seminars
-Identify other interventions as needed
-Identify Successes
WEEKLY ATTENDANCE GROUPS
Weekly Progress Monitoring
Daily Skyward Checks
ATTENDANCE SEMINARStudents with 7+ absences are invited to the Attendance Seminar. The purpose is to discuss the importance of attendance and why there is a concern. Students are informed of the attendance process and what is necessary at this point forward. Future absences are unexcused without a doctor’s note or school health room verification. Barriers to students’ attendance are addressed. Students complete the Attendance Seminar Student Commitment and Attendance Barriers form.
