The National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Wisconsin Chapter remained steadfastly focused in 2009 on serving the more than 10,000 Wisconsin residents diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and the individuals who love and care for them, through ground-breaking research and robust assistance.

With the continued passionate support of individuals, corporations and foundations - and in concert with efficient new collaborations and partnerships - the Wisconsin Chapter generated nearly $5 million in 2009. More than 85 percent of those dollars supported the Society mission of driving research for a cure and addressing the challenges of those affected by MS.

What’s more, in 2009 the Wisconsin Chapter also completed its $2 million commitment to support the international research initiative titled Promise: 2010, part of which is taking place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Thanks to generous donors and dedicated volunteers we continued pushing our strategic goals forward:

• We are a driving force of MS research, relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and cure. • We address the challenges of each person whose life is affected by MS. • We mobilize the talents and resources of the millions of people who want to do something about MS. • We are activists. • We will raise $1.25 billion by the end of 2010 to be used in the fight against MS.

By working together and focusing our efforts, we will see a world free of MS.

Sincerely,Alyson Zierdt, Board Chair Colleen G. Kalt, President & CEO

Six months before he graduated from Waukesha South High School, Andrew Scrima’s father passed away from complications of multiple sclerosis. Andrew had already lost one of his uncles to MS, and now his dad was gone. All Andrew could think about was, “Am I next?”

Andrew recalls that it wasn’t until he was 11 years old that he realized the severity of his dad’s illness.

Thomas Scrima was diagnosed with primary progressive MS right before Andrew was born. A little more than a decade later, Andrew said, “My dad was unable to remember things and even worse for me as a kid; he was unable to run, walk for any distance or do anything physical.” A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Thomas was an accountant before his MS forced him to stop working. When that happened, life at home became emotionally charged and financially difficult. Before Andrew reached middle school, his parents had divorced.

Despite the turmoil surrounding him, it was at this time that Andrew determined his goal in life would be to help others. “I knew my dad was that way, and so were my uncles. I wanted to follow in that family tradition,” said Andrew.

In high school, Andrew worked 25 hours per week as a grocery store clerk. “I had to pay for many things that other kids didn’t,” said Andrew. He found time to help his

sisters – one of whom is autistic. And he maintained a 3.7 grade point average. “I worked very hard in high school because I knew it would make my dad proud,” said Andrew. He also joined the football team. “Even though I knew I would never get to play, I joined the football team for one reason,” said Andrew, “I joined because my dad was a big football fan, and I thought it would make him happy to see me in my uniform.” During the final years of his life, Andrew’s dad resided in a long-term care facility. “I would go to see my dad all the time. Sometimes I would feed him to give my grandma a break.” He added, “I wasn’t always sure if he knew who I was anymore. But I have to believe he did.” Thomas passed away in December 2008.

Following high school graduation, the only thing standing between Andrew and his dream of helping others and being a school psychologist (just like his beloved uncle, with whom he was now living), was the opportunity to attend college. Andrew applied for and was one of 30 students in 2009 selected to receive an MS College Scholarship from the National MS Society-Wisconsin Chapter (see the information box for program details).

Andrew currently attends the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, but hopes to transfer to UW-Madison “and follow in my dad’s footsteps.” He’s majoring in Psychology and Spanish. “I plan to get my bachelor’s degree and move on to graduate school to get my school psychology degree and certification.” Andrew says he wants to be there for students whose parents are experiencing problems. “I know how alone they can feel.”

With the support of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Wisconsin Chapter, Andrew is shifting his focus from, “Am I next?” to “How can I help?”

Scholarship Program Won’t Let MS Stand in the Way of a College Education MS Scholarships are funded by individual donations and foundation grants. Launched in 2004, the program has provided more than 100 Wisconsin students who either have MS themselves or have a parent or guardian with the disease, with more than $200,000 in financial awards. Recipients are judged on a variety of criteria including academic performance, leadership and community service. Unfortunately in 2009 – and for the first time in the program’s history – the Wisconsin Chapter had approved scholars that it could not fund.

“There is very good scientific evidence correlating low levels of vitamin D with a high risk of MS and with high disability in people with MS,” said Colleen Hayes, PhD, a professor and researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Hayes has studied nutrition and the immune system for more than 25 years, and vitamin D and MS for almost 20 years. She has many friends and one family member with MS. Dr. Hayes is a recipient of numerous National Multiple Sclerosis Society grants – in fact all of her research funding has come from the Society – and was notified in October 2009 that she would receive another $485,469 award to continue her vitamin D studies. In the past 10 years, she has received more than $1.8 million in grants from the National MS Society.

According to Dr. Hayes, “It is not really possible to get the vitamin D one needs from food alone, without UVL exposure or vitamin D supplements. In the complete absence of UVL exposure, an average adult will need 100 micrograms (about 4000 IU) of vitamin D3 everyday.” Only 10 percent of the vitamin D that people need comes from foods like fish, eggs and mushrooms.

A study released by Harvard Medical School showed at least one in five U.S. children ages one to 11 doesn’t get enough vitamin D and could be at risk for a variety of health problems. The findings add to mounting evidence about vitamin D deficiency in children, teens and adults.

“Studies have suggested that vitamin D is beneficial for preventing infections, autoimmune diseases, cancers and cardiovascular diseases,” Dr. Hayes said. “No one should be without these health benefits.”

According to Dr. Hayes, a study in Finland showed that after vitamin D levels decreased during winter, MS relapse rates increased. In order to study the correlation between vitamin D and MS, Dr. Hayes uses the animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). She explained, “It is the best model we have to study the disease process. The new knowledge we have gained through research in the model disease has provided a strong scientific rational for testing vitamin D and calcitriol in MS patients.”

Dr. Hayes treated mice with calcitriol, the hormone form of vitamin D that is active in the human body. She found that it can prevent progression of EAE in both male and female mice.

MS patients were treated with calcitriol, as a prescription drug that must be taken under a physician’s supervision, in a clinical trial. Dr. Hayes said, “It reduced the relapse rate and prevented disease progression. However, it did not become a standard MS therapy due to the risk of raising the serum calcium levels. We have found a way to avoid this risk and are working with neurologists to organize a follow-up clinical study.”

Dr. Hayes and a group of researchers from Wisconsin, Missouri, Oregon, Ohio and Canada are currently trying to determine how calcitriol suppresses disease activity in EAE.

This research, which could not happen without the support of the National MS Society, is especially important in Wisconsin, where there is not enough UVL intensity to form vitamin D from October to April, according to Dr. Hayes.

National MS Society Funds $5.8 Million in Wisconsin-Based ResearchThe National Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more MS research worldwide than any other nonprofit organization. Closer to home, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is one of Wisconsin’s largest nonprofit funders of research. The Society has invested $5.8 million in seven Wisconsin-based MS research studies. These are among the most exciting MS studies in the world.

His beloved Chicago Bears football team was starting a winning streak that would lead to a Super Bowl Championship when Carl Boston received the news he had multiple sclerosis. Not only was the diagnosis devastating, but it had taken eight long years to confirm.

Back in 1975 when he was only 19 years old, Carl had felt tingling and burning in his legs. On some occasions he also experienced vertigo. He didn’t know what was happening to his body and he was scared. His doctor performed a spinal tap and told the Chicago native he might have multiple sclerosis. It wasn’t until 1983 that additional tests confirmed the diagnosis.

Carl tried not to let MS slow him down. And during the next several years, it didn’t. He married, raised a family and worked as a forklift operator at a number of companies. But then life seemed to get the best of him. He was involved in a traumatic car accident. His father passed away and soon his marriage fell apart. By the turn of the century, Carl was alone with MS. And that’s when the die-hard Bears fan decided to make the land of the Green and Gold his home.

In 2001, Carl moved to Green Bay to be closer to his children. Although his MS has progressed – Carl now utilizes a power wheelchair – he says he is one of the most fortunate people he knows. “I can still use my arms. I can build things. And,” says Carl, “I can even pick up a penny off the floor” – something his MS had made difficult in the past.

Now age 54, Carl tells others who are living with a disability to stay strong and most of all, stay positive. No matter what each day brings, Carl says “When I wake up I’m happy.”

With the support of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Wisconsin Chapter, Carl has been able to maintain his independence. In 2009 the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Wisconsin Chapter, the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) in Green Bay and Lutheran Social Services partnered to provide Carl with financial assistance so that he could install an automatic door opener in his apartment. Before the device was installed, getting in and out of his apartment was a struggle. Simply trying to go down the hall to do his laundry, sayes Carl, was a daunting task.

Today, Carl says, he can come and go as he pleases. “I can go shopping, buy groceries or sometimes I’ll just go outside and take long journeys all by myself.” He no longer has to stay inside the apartment or get someone to help him when he wants to leave. And that, says the grandfather of 22, is a blessing.

Now, if the Chicago Bears could just get back to the Super Bowl.

Income Tax Donation Program Funds Financial Assistance More than 100 residents diagnosed with multiple sclerosis received financial assistance in 2009 from the Wisconsin Chapter’s Make a Mark for MS state income tax donation check-off program. During its three-year history, the Make a Mark for MS program has generated $266,103 in donations; and every penny raised stays in Wisconsin.

The program is administered by a seven-member advisory committee that meets monthly to review applications. Financial assistance is available to support MS-related needs, such as the purchase of durable medical equipment, home modifications and counseling services.

Michael Carrithers, M.D., Ph.D is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and treats patients at the University Hospital and Clinics MS Clinic and the William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital. Dr. Carrithers is studying how immune cells move through the body. He has a $306,292 grant from the National MS Society.

Shing-yan (Bill) Chiu, Ph.D. is a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He is studying the movement of mitochondria, which generate energy for the myelinated axons (nerve fibers). Chiu’s research is supported by a $568,425 grant from the National MS Society.

Ian Duncan, BVMS, Ph.D., from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, has a $3.4 million grant from the National MS Society as part of the Promise: 2010 Nervous System Repair and Protection Initiative. One of the goals of his research is to repair the myelin sheaths that are damaged in MS.

John Fleming, M.D, is a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the director of the MS Clinic at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. Dr. Fleming has a $567,110 grant from the National MS Society and is studying the ingestion of worm eggs to change the immune response in patients with MS.

Colleen Hayes, Ph.D, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is researching vitamin D’s role in MS with a $540,470 grant from the National MS Society. There are higher incidences of MS further from the equator where the exposure to sunlight, and vitamin D, is lower.

Alexander Ng, Ph.D, from Marquette University, received a $44,000 grant from the National MS Society to study the factors that affect bone strength in people with MS. He is trying to find the reasons behind the high risk of decreased bone mineral density (BMD) in people with MS.

Julie Olson, Ph.D., from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, received a $400,492 grant from the National MS Society to study the immune-system reaction to viruses in a virus-induced model of MS.
