SecurityThe homicide rate in São Paulo is in decline but it is still worse if compared withsome other large metropolitan areas. Follow local advice to avoid certain parts oftown. If you have a car make sure that is locked even at closed parking lots. Do notleave objects visible in the interior of your vehicle. It is advised to keep yourwindows shut when stopped at intersections. Police can be reached by calling 190from every phone. At the public spaces, please, keep close watch of your belongings. Do notleave backpacks, wallets, computers, cameras, cell phones unattended.Deatur is a police department dedicated to help the tourists in need, foremergencies. The phone number is +55 11 3257-4475.

AirportAirport: The São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) can be reached both by car

and by public transport. The airport lies 26 kilometres (17 miles) from the city centre, and connects with nationaland international destinations. Please refer to the airport website for further information:http://www.gru.com.br/ . Most international flights arrive and depart from Terminal 3.

Taxi: The easiest way to get to your hotel or to Escola Politécnica da USP from theGRU Airport is by taxi. You can easily find the booth of the airport taxi company justoutside the terminal at the Arrivals Area. The taxi fare to reach downtown São Paulo is about US$ 40 on lighter traffic hours. Thefare can reach sensibly higher values during rush hours, that is, between 7 and 10 A.M.and from 5 to 8 P.M.Do not accept any other offers of taxis from theairport to the city. Go straight to the taxi companybooth and show them your hotel address (It helpsif you bring it printed). The taxi fare can be paid atthe counter or to the driver. The taxi company that serves the airport isGuarucoop - +55 (11) 2440 – 7700

Taxi booth at GRU Airport:

Shuttle buses (EMTU – SP): Shuttle Buses are available from the GRU Airport todifferent locations in the city. Most of the buses run every 30-45 minutes, depending ontime of day. The departures are in Terminal 4. Tickets may be purchased in advance orinside the bus. Buses are comfortable (with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, assigned seats). However, from the bus destinations you may need to take a taxi or transportation to yourhotel. The most relevant bus lines and their fares are listed here:

2015 PACE Annual ForumDelegate Information Guide

Revision date 19 June 2015 6

Unfortunately there are no Train or Subway Stations near the GRU Airport – one must ridea bus to the nearest subway stations, which are Tatuapé (bus lines 257 or 299), República(bus line 259) or Tietê (the first stop of the 258 bus line).Check the website http://www.airportbusservice.com.br/en/linhas for further advice.

Private Vans: Private vans are available at the GRU Airport, too. The fares dependon the size of the car and the number of riders. Check http://www.gru.com.br/pt-br/ComoChegar/Translado for drivers’ information.

Public Transportation

Buses:There are more than 10,000 buses in São Paulo. Most of the time, it is a good wayto travel around the city, however, during rush hours the crowds and traffic will bevery heavy. You can buy your ticket inside the bus. The current fare is R$ 3,50 (~US$ 1,10) perride. A great option is Bilhete Único, a card that can be purchased at lottery shops orat SPTrans desks. Passengers with Bilhete Único may travel in four different busesor subway trains every three hours paying a single fare.

There are lots of lines that travel to and inside the Cidade Universitária, that is, theplace where Escola Politécnica is. The most relevant ones are the 8012-10 and the8022-10 – their final stop is near to the Butantã Subway Station.

Google Maps provides useful information about the time tables and stops. For moreassistance, check the SPTrans Website (http://www.sptrans.com.br/) or dial 156.

Subway (Metro):São Paulo’s Subway system is the easiest way to get around the city – there arestations near every major attraction and the trains are clean and safe. Nevertheless, avoid the subway during rush hours: it can be unbelievably crowded.

The lines operate daily from 4:40 A.M., and close around midnight. A single ticketcosts R$ 3,50. There is no change of fare based on distance or time of travel. Toavoid lines at ticket counters it is recommended to purchase your single tickets inadvance.

Check the Metro Site for great information about the lines, stations and time tables(http://www.metro.sp.gov.br/en/your-trip/index.aspx ). The Metro SP Phone App canalso be extremely handy.

Train (CPTM):CPTM covers both peripheral regions of the city and Marginal Pinheiros. Subwayand train system connect at the following stations: Barra Funda, Luz, Brás and SantoAmaro. The connection with the subway is free, and the single ticket costs aboutUS$ 1,10 (R$ 3,50).The Trains tend to be unsafe, especially during late night hours. For furtherinformation, check the CPTM Website (http://www.cptm.sp.gov.br/)

Taxis:Taxis can be a convenient – although much more expensive - way to move aroundsince the vehicles can be allowed on some of the bus lanes to avoid congestion. Youcan simply hail a cab at the street or ask for one at your hotelfront desk. Another very easy way to get a taxi is by smartphone app. (easytaxi, 99taxis, for instance) All taxis are white. The driver has to put the meter on as soon asthe ride starts.

Driving in São PauloTraffic congestion is a problem in São Paulo. Short rides can take too long due to congestion. Parkingfees can be high in downtown or in business districts. If you decide to have a rental car make surethat it is equipped with a GPS. The city is not really easy to navigate since there are not manygeographical landmarks.

Due to traffic stress some drivers can be more aggressive. Road rage incidents are not uncommon.Pay extra attention in lane changes! Motorcycles are free to run between lanes and fatal accidentsare common. Bus and bicycle lanes are strictly enforced. Speed cameras are spread all around thecity.

From Monday to Friday depending on your car license number, you can be restricted to access thearea around downtown. For instance, license plates with final numbers 1 and 2 are restricted onMondays, 3 and 4 on Tuesdays and so on. The restriction period goes from 7AM to 10AM and from5PM to 8PM. USP campus lies just outside the restriction zone but most hotels are not. Sensors andofficers do enforce this law. You can be fined more than once if several officers or devices spot yourcar during the restriction period. If you are renting a car, check with your vendor about this restriction.

Transportation to the Conference

Shuttle Buses:

During the PACE Forum shuttle buses will be available between theassigned hotels and the USP Campus. Buses will be marked and they willdepart from the 3 hotel lobbies. The meeting times for the buses will beprovided. Please refer to the PACE website for the latest information about theshuttle buses. If you plan to take the shuttle bus, please register for the buson the PACE website. If you are not staying in one of the assigned hotels you can still use theshuttle buses, but you will need to be at the hotel stops at the right time.

There will be no shuttle buses during the pre-conference training. It issuggested to use public transportation or to take a taxi during the training week.

Cars:

Parking on campus is free. However, on Sundays access to the campus isrestricted. Visitors need to ask for a permit to enter the campus on Sunday. Ifyou are driving to the welcome reception on Sunday, please contactMarcelo Alves for the needed pass before the event.

If you decide to rent a car during your stay at São Paulo it is recommended thatyou check if your hotel of choice charges for parking. At the airport you will findthe offices of major rental car companies. With all of them you can book on-lineand compare the costs. It is also recommended to have a GPS for easierorientation in town.

Subway:

To reach the university by public transportation you will have some options. Thenearest subway station is “Butantã” (see map). From there, at the adjacent busterminal, you can get the 8022-10. It will pass at the bus terminal inside campusnear the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Buildings. To exit campus back to theSubway station you must take bus 8012-10.

Tips for Students at the PACE Annual Forum

PACE extends a special welcome to each student at this year’s PACE Annual Forum!

We hope you are excited to be part of the PACE Annual Forum, and want you to enjoy theconference. Is the PACE Annual Forum your first professional conference? Congratulations! Here are a few suggestions to help you make the most of the experience, and takeadvantage of the opportunities that are available.

Join us for the Welcome Reception on Sunday, July 26th at USP. This casual gathering is a greatopportunity to meet students and faculty from other schools around the world, and to meetrepresentatives from the PACE companies. Come enjoy the food and friendship.

Take time to meet and talk with the other people at the conference. Network with the students, faculty, and industry experts.

Monday and Tuesday are mostly dedicated to the RSMS project competition. If you are not part ofa project team, we recommend that you attend the team presentations and learn how each groupmet the challenge to design a Reconfigurable Shared-Use Mobility System vehicle. Which one doyou expect to see on the road in a few years?

Be sure to come to the presentations on Wednesday and Thursday. These two days after theRSMS project competition are filled with activities and presentations for faculty AND students. Youcan learn a lot from the presentations and workshops.

Executives from the PACE companies are here - take time to listen to their presentations, askquestions during Q&A, and even talk with them during lunch or breaks. How often can you speakface-to-face with a vice president or director from a large company such as GM or Siemens PLMSoftware? You can learn a lot from these successful experts – what is the latest news from theircompany, how did they succeed in their career, what do they look for in new employees?

Join the workshops on consumer needs, new features in NX, and PLM education. The topics wereselected to help you to learn about product development and PLM in industry today. In a few yearsyou will be an industry professional – these workshops can help you to prepare.

What if there are two activities scheduled at the same time? Professional conferences oftenschedule two or more presentations or activities at the same time to offer more choices forattendees. The choice is yours – select the presentation that interests you more, or that willenhance your skillset.

Plan your sightseeing for Friday July 31st. Friday is set aside as “PACE Cultural Day” to allow timefor delegates to visit local places of interest before heading back home. You may want to makeplans with the students from another PACE school to sightsee or dine together.

Have fun! The welcome reception, awards dinner, and cultural tours are opportunities to relax alittle and enjoy yourself in the presence of friends.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2015 PACE Annual Forum!
