The 40th Anniversary Retreat will officially
start the programs on Thursday afternoon.

Questions with numerical answers. The top scoring
table will be picked based on the composite score of
the 3 categories in the competition. Sounds like fun,
so start studying up early!
We will have three artist demonstrations – one for each day of the event. Beginning on Thursday afternoon,
Roger Dale Brown will give a special demonstration in the Magnolia Ballroom from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Dale’s demo will focus on Accentuating. “In this demo I will accentuate things in the scene to portray the
same drama and relay the emotions that I feel when I look at a scene.
This will be done by taking certain aspects of the scene and enhancing
them, while playing down passages that are less important.
Manipulation is a key aspect of any good painting. The artist’s
responsibility is to guide the viewer through the painting.”
Originally from Nashville, Roger now resides in Franklin Tennessee. Avid
about traveling he is compelled to explore regions and subjects that capture
his interest. Roger has made it his life’s study to gather and understand
information from these special places. This expands his knowledge of
nature, history, architecture and culture which inspires him to create his
poignant oil paintings.
Crediting historical artists, such as John Carlson, Arthur Streeton, Isaac Levitan and John Singer Sargent for their
example. Roger has developed his own unique voice in his art and believes that a painting on location, or from
life, is an essential element to being an artist. Roger captures the emotion of the scene he is painting by drawing
on his knowledge and his dedication to art. “Art is a privilege, gift and journey.”
Roger's oil paintings have been displayed in
galleries and museums throughout the
United States and have won many awards which
include: First Place in the Barnes and
Farms National Juried Art Show, Museum
Purchase Award and third place at the
Easton Plein Air Competition as well as the Gold
Medal Award from the Hudson Valley
Art Association. His work has also been accepted
in Oil Painters of America National
Juried Exhibitions, and he was accepted into the
Art Renewal Center as a Living Master. He was
also a finalist In the ARC Salon and won Artist choice award at the 2013 American Impressionist Society National
Show. Roger has been published by:
International Artist Magazine, American Artist
Magazine, American Art Collector Magazine, Plein-Air
Magazine and the Artist Magazine. His works are owned
by private collectors across the country and include
many well-known celebrities and major corporations.
Roger shares his knowledge, teaching workshops
throughout the country. He believes in capturing the
essence of his subjects and instills this in his students
whether teaching on location, figurative, studio or still
life.
Roger also has been honored to jury several
competitions for Oil Painters of America and American Impressionist Society, along with, judging and jurying plein
air competitions across the country.
Our next featured artist is Signature Member Dee Beard Dean, who
resides in Charleston. Dee will be doing a plein air painting
demonstration at the Waterfront Park in downtown Charleston on
Friday morning starting at 9:15 to 9:30 a.m. Her presentation will
run approximately two hours.. There is a parking structure just
adjacent to Waterfront Park. Following Dee’s demo, members may
plein air paint downtown or browse the shops downtown and find
will find many choices in the immediate area for a casual lunch.
Dee Beard Dean is a nationally recognized artist who has been
painting since childhood. She was raised in the countryside of
northern Indiana and began her formal studies at Grand Rapids
College, Kendall College of Art and Design, and the New York
Academy of Art.
Dee is known for her painterly landscapes and portraits. Her greatest inspirations have come from painting en plein
air where her eye for color and composition, and her elevated senses, guide her in creating paintings filled with
evocative light and dramatic shadows.
In addition to being a Signature Member of ASMA, she
is also a member and founder of Plein Air Painters of
the Southeast (PAP-SE), a Signature Member of the
American Impressionist Society, an Honorary Signature
Member of International Plein Air Painters (IPAP), and
member of Oil Painters of America, American Women
Artists, and Eastern League of Professional Artists. Her
work has received many awards at juried art
competitions, and has been published in many regional
and national journals.
Dee and her husband, Dr. Nicolai Chalfa, live in
Charleston, SC and annually host an Art Trip to a
different country. Her life and her work are recorded in
her book “Painter by Providence” written by Michelle
Morton.
Our second artist demonstration will featuring Signature
Member Don Maitz, from Sarasota, FL.
Don informed us that 2018 is the 300th anniversary of Black Beard
taking the Charleston Harbor. In light of all this, it is very likely he
will be doing a special Pirate painting for his demonstration. Don’s
demo will take place on Saturday morning, following the Annual
General Meeting. Don will do a portrait of a pirate in the morning.
Weather permitting, Don will have his choice to do the first part of
his presentation in the large seating area out by the pool area, or in
the Ballroom – whichever seems appropriate at the time. We will
have a 30 minute break for lunch and return to the Ballroom for a
slide presentation with Don.
Don Maitz has been painting professionally since his graduation from
the Paier School of Art in 1975. While in school a few of his drawings
appeared in Marvel Comics publications. He has produced over two hundred book covers mostly of S.F and fantastic
subjects and has illustrated works of authors such as Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, and George R.R.
Martin. Paramount and Warner Brothers Studios employed him as a concept artist for the animated feature films,
“Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius” and “Ant Bully”.
Maitz created the iconic Captain Morgan spiced rum
character, has been commissioned by the National
Geographic Society, and most New York Publishing
Houses. The History Channel, the Today Show, and
Dateline NBC have presented Maitz Sea faring subjects in
their broadcasts. Odyssey Marine Exploration has included
Maitz art in their nationally touring exhibits, and the
“Pirate Treasure: A Shipwreck Museum” recently opened in
St. Thomas in the American Virgin Islands features his art.
Maitz's work have been a favorite installment in public
exhibitions across the U.S. with many museum
exhibitions. He received a Silver Medal from the Society of
Illustrators, two Hugo awards for Best Artist, A Howard
Award, and Inkpot award (from the San Diego Comic Con),
Ten Chesley Awards and an Award of Excellence at the 24th
International Exhibition at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic
Seaport. His works are in numerous private collections.
Don lives in Florida with his wife, Janny Wurts, a noted author
of twenty published books and thirty five short stories of
fantastic literature, who as an accomplished artist who paints
the covers to her novels. She is published by HarperCollins, UK.
There will also be plein air painting opportunities at
Shem Creek and at the waterfront along the Ravenal
Bridge. In fact, from the host hotel, when we last
checked, there appeared to be a walk path that leads
from the hotel directly to the water, and continues on
to some trails that go for a couple of miles. A great place to do some plein air painting early in the morning!
Many of our Fellows and Signature members will be participating in the Plein Air painting events. These will be
informal, early morning get together’ s. This is a great opportunity to get to know some of your favorite painters
better while improving your skills! No formal schedule for these events, so communicate directly with the other
ASMA attendees.
Charleston is filled with history, and we will likely have some historical options lined up for members to check out.
Members may want to come to Charleston early and do other activities like touring the beautiful Magnolia
Plantation, visit Fort Sumter National Park, the Aquarium, Middleton Place, the Battery, the H.L. Hunley
Submarine, the Nathaniel Russel House Museum, Drayton Hall… the list goes on and on! There is no shortage of
great things to see in Charleston and the surrounding areas.
We are also very fortunate to have one of the most prestigious local galleries in Charleston hosting a very special
Invitational show, which will feature 65 works from ASMA artists. You will not want to miss this event!
Principle Gallery will host the Marine Art Invitational in celebrations of ASMA’s 40th Anniversary with an Opening
Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening, November 2, 2018. Prior to the evening reception, participating
artists will meet in Washington Square at the corner of Meeting and Broad St. for a Plein air painting affair from
1:30 to 3:00 pm. Interested patrons may come watch the artists painting before the evening festivities. All ASMA
artists and guests will want to attend the opening reception! The show will hang through the end of November.

the Aquarium Wharf in downtown
Charleston. There should be plenty

at least 15 minutes early. The cruise
