Malawi continues to experience its

worst food crisis since the devastating

famine of 2002.

The government estimates that

well over 2 million people face a se-

vere food shortage, and this is playing

out in villages all over the country,

including areas served by Ministry of

Hope. With incredible support from

churches and individuals throughout

the U.S., Ministry of Hope has raised

over $100,000 for famine relief. Here

is how those funds are being put to

work:

Phase I: In September of 2015, a

team headed by Peter Barbano of

South Carolina, was in Malawi for the

annual Lean Season project, purchas-

ing supplies for the months when

food stocks run low. Our typical level

of funding for the project was supple-

mented with additional generous sup-

port from individuals and churches in

the U.S. who were concerned about a

coming crisis.

Our team was able to buy signifi-

cantly more maize than in past years,

to the point where every available

storehouse was filled to the maxi-

mum. Provisions included enough

food for 475,000 meals: 95 tons of

maize, 14 tons of beans, 120,000

in 2015. He

touched many of your

hearts and through

your generosity Min-

istry of Hope has

been able to provide

life-saving provisions

to many in a time of

severe famine. Thank you for entrusting

MoH with your gifts that enable Chris-

tians in Malawi to be salt and light in their

communities as they distribute much

needed food in this time of need.

During this time of famine, your gifts

have enabled us not only to provide one

meal a day for the 2400 orphans of Minis-

try of Hope, but also to distribute food to

vulnerable families in the villages. These

include 1,772 households headed up by

orphans, widows, and those with disabili-

ties or HIV/AIDS. This outreach would

not have happened without you.

With this wonderful blessing we also

have many challenges in 2016. The fam-

ine continues to adversely affect the na-

tion and the next few weeks are critical to

farmers. We continue to receive requests

from our staff in Malawi asking for

prayers for much needed rain.

In addition, as funding shifted to fam-

ine support in 2015, several of Ministry of

Hope's other essential programs have suf-

fered. One of the most important has been

education scholarships. As we enter 2016

we are short in covering the scholarships

for the 234 students that depend on Minis-

try of Hope to stay in school.

Please consider a gift at this time to

brighten the futures of these children and

bring true hope to their lives.

portions of soya, 200 gallons of cook-

ing oil, 4 tons of sugar, and 1,000 lbs.

of salt. Additional funds were ear-

marked to purchase vegetables at later

times, and some funds were allocated

for fertilizer for the upcoming fall

planting at our centers.

These food supplies were primarily

aimed at feeding the increased numbers

of orphaned and vulnerable children

coming to our centers, as well as hun-

gry villagers and especially needy

families. Huge crowds have been com-

ing to the centers, sometimes as many

as 3,000 people in a single day.

Positive impact of the programs:

Children and the vulnerable

are being fed a healthy meal.

Children are strong enough to

attend school and focus on

their studies.

Guardians are able to spend

time in the fields to provide

for the future.

Children are exposed to the

Gospel teachings multiple

times a week, fostering good

behavior and bringing some in

to the fold as they commit

their lives to Christ.

Phase II: In January of 2016, with

additional support from churches and

individuals in the U.S., a program of

maize distribution to the community

began at our six centers. Vulnerable

households are the chief beneficiaries

including those with widows, the aged,

people living with HIV/AIDS, people

with physical disabilities, and orphan-

headed households. A total of 1,772

households (8,860 people) have re-

ceived a 25kg (55 lb.) bag of maize as

of January 20. Additional funds are on

their way to expand this program.

Among the recent recipients was

Ireen Spywell, a 15-year old girl who

has responsibility for her four siblings

since they lost both parents. This

caused Ireen to drop out of school in

search of a means for food. She was

thrilled to receive the 25kg of maize

and responded, “I do not know what to

say to show my happiness and appre-

ciation.” Fortunately Ireen has been

able to return to school since obtaining

the needed provision. The family will

likely ration food to one meal per day

to stretch their supply of grain as long

as possible.

Future Outlook: Looking forward,

the Malawi government and agencies

such as USAID are warning that the El

Nino conditions bringing continued

drought to Malawi are threatening the

2016 harvest. Crops are already wilting

in some parts of the country and pros-

pects are bleak unless drastic measures

are taken.

Opportunities exist for investment

in agricultural methods that make better

use of irrigation. Ministry of Hope will

continue to explore these options and

support those that will help to grow

adequate crops.

While the situation continues to be

very difficult, your generous support is

reaching families in need, providing

comfort and hope. Thank you for your

commitment to help those in “the warm

heart of Africa.”

Please continue to pray for the peo-

ple of Malawi.
