AS WE GATHER

We continue our sermon series on “The Armor of God,” from Ephesians

chapter 6. God equips and protects us by “His good gifts and Spirit.”

Today, we focus on the Belt of Truth & the Breastplate of Righteousness.

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

People: Who made heaven and earth.

Pastor: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

People: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

Pastor: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the

body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our

unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed,

and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in

the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God,

be merciful to me, a sinner.

(Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.)

People: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to

everlasting life. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your

sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins

in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

The Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice. He saw that there was no man, and

wondered that there was no one to intercede; then his own arm brought him salvation, and his

righteousness upheld him. He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his

head; he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped himself in zeal as a cloak.

THE EPISTLE James 2:14-19

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save

“Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is

that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith

and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my

works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of

the Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they

begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers

into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. 34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to

him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he

spoke plainly. 36 And Jesus[h] charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more

zealously they proclaimed it. 37 And they

were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear

and the mute speak.”

THE NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor: Let us pray with confidence on behalf of the whole Church and the world to Him who has the

words of eternal life. Lord, in Your mercy,

Pastor: For all pastors in the Church, that they may faithfully and continually proclaim and distribute the

living bread which comes down from heaven that many may believe and be saved. Lord, in Your mercy,

and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your

only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we

might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all

who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels
