This Week’s Sponsor Colin & Joy Martin Thank you very much .
Learn to get your funding
applications right ARE you passionate about a project
but need funding to get it up and
running?
Corangamite Shire Council’s grant
application writing workshop is
designed to help you write better
funding applications.
Corangamite Shire Mayor Jo Beard invited individuals
and members of community organisations or not-for-profit
groups to come along and learn what makes a good
application.
“This is an opportunity to hear directly from the funding
decision makers about what they look for when deciding
who gets financial assistance, and who doesn’t,” Cr Beard
said.
“Presenters from Council, the South West Community
Foundation, Regional Development Victoria, Regional
Arts Victoria, and philanthropic funds will share tips on
how to approach funders, and the importance of building
partnership and networks.
“They will also explain the nuts and bolts of preparing
budgets and timelines that they consider when deciding
whether supporting a particular applicant is a good
investment,” Cr Beard said.
“If you’re seeking funding, you can’t afford to miss out on
this workshop because getting your application right can
make all the difference when it comes to getting funding
to turn your plans into reality.”
Participants will also be provided with lists of grants
available that might be appropriate for their particular
project.
The workshop will be at the Killara Centre, 210 Manifold
Street, on Monday 19 March, from 7 pm—9 pm.
Another will be held at the Moyne Shire Council
Community Services Centre, 16 Atkinson Street, Port
Fairy, on Sunday 25 March, from 1.30pm – 3.30pm.
To register, contact Regional Arts Victoria’s Creative Arts
Facilitator, Great South Coast, Jo Grant at
[email protected] or on 5568 0560 and specify which
location you’re registering for.
Light refreshments will be provided so please advise of
any dietary requirements.
Over the next two years, the farmlands between Beaufort and Skipton will be a busy work site as we construct the Stockyard Hill Wind Farm.
The construction of this significant project involves many people in designing, building and commissioning of Australia’s largest wind farm.
Soon, residents in the area will see increased activity on local roads and on and around the project area.
The construction of the wind farm is yet to commence.
However preliminary work, including surveying and geotechnical works have commenced and will continue for the coming weeks.
Works to commence shortly include:
Clearing of land for the main construction compound on Stockyard Hill Road.
Preliminary works on the dedicated wind farm quarry (located on Stockyard Hill-Wangatta Road)
Widening and upgrading several intersections in and around the Wind Farm area to allow for over-dimensional vehicle movements.
The works outlined above will result in an increase in traffic flow mainly along Beaufort-Skipton Road and Stockyard Hill Road.
To find out more information about the project head to www.stockyardhillwindfarm.com.au

Skipton Progress Association Inc. So is it autumn or is it still summer? - a very hot evening on
8th March for our Annual General Meeting and the
subsequent General Meeting for March.
The change of meeting date accommodated people important
to us, and we have decided to trial moving to the second
Thursday of each month, the next, April, meeting will
therefore be on Thursday 12th April, at 7.30 p.m. in the
Supper Room of the Mechanics Hall, we hope it will suit
interested residents, we certainly need a few more people at
our meetings.
Those at the Annual General Meeting elected the following
Committee…
President: Lilla Orton
Vice President : John Kavanagh
2nd Vice President :Donald Marani-Binks
Treasurer: Michael Sproules
Secretary: Sharon Andrewartha
Committee Members Val Day, Victoria Lovejoy
and Jan Murphy.
The Treasurer’s Report for 2018 showed a very healthy state
of affairs, especially, the continuing financial contribution of
the Skipton Community Newsletter.
We do see the Newsletter as a way of keeping Skipton in
touch with each other, with news of coming events and
reports of activities; feedback is very welcome, what would
you like to see in the Newsletter?
Things we would like to focus on for the coming year are
putting on another Craft Day in winter; planning landscaping
and tree planting for this winter; and getting something done
about the state of Montgomery Street, from the Beaufort
Road intersection, down the hill with the obscured railings
and the unofficial truck park that just gets bigger and bigger,
but is so essential to the drivers; across the bridge and past
the shopping centre, which has waves on the surface like the
sea and is an increasing danger to pedestrians and vehicles;
line marking is becoming more and more obscure and
confusing.
Council have filled their responsibilities with marking the
parking bays, the rest is up to VicRoads .
With the School holidays and Easter almost upon us, an
opportunity to say enjoy the break, and please take care on
the roads.
If your group has plans for April
dates, remember the Skipton
Newsletter does not come out in the
School holidays, so get your entry in
now as a reminder for the coming
weeks.

Where the gargoyles
are kangaroos…. It’s almost sad that the grand old building that is St.
Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, is primarily known now
for it’s iconic gargoyles – kangaroo heads that direct rain
from the roof.
Skipton’s original Presbyterian Church was a little brick
church built in 1857 to the North East of the Cemetery
(which explains why the original grand home still known
as the Manse on West Boundary Road is so far away from
today’s Church).
St Andrew’s was built in 1871 “to the glory of God” by a
strong congregation and with huge support from Francis
Ormond of Borriyalloak who contributed one fifth of the
whole cost.
Skipton owes a huge debt to Francis Ormond who was
passionate about education especially, and in his later life
was a benefactor of Ormond College in Melbourne and
Working Men’s Colleges in the City.
If you are interested in our Presbyterian and Scottish
history, a recently donated book will intrigue you, a
history by the man who was a minister at St Andrew’s
for many years and in 1891 dated his forword, The
Manse, Skipton. (from “Skipton Sketchbook” available from the Museum and the Post Office and the Op Shop in Skipton)
Everyone is welcome to come to the now regular Open
Days at the Skipton Court House Museum on the third
Sunday of each month.
The Court House Museum is Open
on Sunday 18th March
Visitors will be welcome from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.

answer your questions.
Entry is by donation and
there will be a “cuppa” in the Old Police House.

Principal’s Message
The swimming program has been completed. Thank you to
everyone for your assistance in delivering such terrific
instruction to our kids – it is great to use our local facility
and use local expertise. Thanks to those parents who were
able to devote a large amount of time to the program, and to
the teachers who are willing to get wet. Thanks to Di and
Amelia for coordinating the program.
Last Friday we had many students swim at the Eureka meet.
The teachers reported how well-behaved our children were,
despite it being a long day, requiring patience.
Congratulations to everyone who participated, and a special
mention to the 11 year girls and Cate Connell who qualified
through to the next round.
This morning we had Parents Club. The PC do such a great
job in the school with catering as well as fund-raising for
projects. Projects from last year included lots of new books,
office equipment, and equipment for the creative play. This
year they are also looking to contribute to upgrading the
facilities and purchasing equipment for your child. Please
consider joining as they are always welcoming of people to
help (the more, the merrier). PC is another way to meet and
build your networks.
I am very pleased to announce that, after a selection process
and interviews, a panel has appointed Natalie Clark as our
new Business Manager. Nat has already filled in for Karen
Bradshaw and has undergone many hours of training. She
has lots of experience in the service industry and we are
very pleased to have her as part of the team. A reminder that
we are having a farewell for Karen at the last assembly for
this term.
Finally, after working in the education for 19 years, I have
accrued some Long Service Leave. Sue and I are taking
next term off to tour the USA. We plan to spend time on the
west coast, visit the canyons and then go to the east to visit
my sister in North Carolina. We will have enough time to
head south, visit Graceland, NY and drop in on ‘Uncle
Donald’ in DC. Cate Elshaug will be Acting Principal for
the term. Cate has had many years’ experience as an
Assistant Principal, which also includes stints as Acting
Principal, so the school will be in good hands. A note has
gone home to Prep/1 parents about arrangements for the
grade.
Calvin Tromp, Principal
Sovereign and Eureka Division Swimming Sports.
Last Friday, 18 Skipton students travelled into Ballarat to
compete in the Sovereign and Eureka Division Swimming
Sports. We arrived and put our things in the limited seating
that had been assigned to us for the day. We put our Skipton
Primary School swimming caps on and did some warm up
laps. We had a practise off the blocks to make sure we
weren’t going to dive too deep.
Our first swimmers were Holly, Lauren and Emma in the
50m Freestyle. Emma and Lauren finished 19th and 20th
overall, in a time of 42.12 and 42.23 respectively. Holly
wasn’t far behind, finishing 22nd overall in a time of 42.89.
Our next swimmer was Andy, in the 12/13 year old
freestyle. He was convinced that this wasn’t his best event
but still swam well, reaching a new PB.
The next group of swimmers were the 11 year old girls.
Within our school, this is a competitive age group with our
trials being close for a spot in the freestyle. Within the
region it is also very competitive with some excellent
swimmers. Our girls swam beautifully. Cate Connell
finished 5th overall, with a time of 40.67. Hannah was close
behind on 7th, swimming 41.89. Sara finished 15th with a
time of 43.78 and Sophie finishing in a time of 48.38.
James and Hamish swam in the 11 year old boys’ freestyle,
both swimming good times.
The youngest competitors of the day were Ruby and
Patrick, swimming in the 9/10 year old age group. Ruby
swam an impressive time of 46.67, finishing 10th overall
and Patrick swimming his race in 57.22.
The next lot of swimmers swam some fantastic breaststroke.
Maddy and Alice swum in their first events for the day and
did a great job. Andy finished 9th, in his best event for the
day. Hannah (the super breaststroker) swam a 54.03 to
finish 5th overall. Lillian Barr also finished 9th and won her
heat. Hamish finished 12th in a fabulous swim.
