2 Welcome
Welcome to ‘Studio 104’, the exhibition of work
produced by the graduating students from the
BA (Hons) Design for Industry and BA (Hons)
Transportation Design programmes.
The work you see before you is the culmination
of four years of study here in the design school. It
represents a diverse range of creative endeavour
informed by collaboration with industry experts,
consumers, manufacturers and other specialists.
We fi rmly believe that our relationship with external
partners and end-users is vital to the relevance of
the designed output, this year is no exception.
We encourage you to ask questions, look beyond the
visual material and talk to the graduates about their
projects, we welcome your interest and feedback.
Each student will have their own story of the
amazing journey they have undergone over the
last four years – often a transformative one in many
senses, on both a personal and professional level.
We also must acknowledge the help we receive
every year from Placement providers, collaborative
project sponsors, external evaluators and other
organisations – a sincere thank you to everyone
involved.
It has been a pleasure to get to know this group
of talented, passionate and enthusiastic designers.
They are a credit to the established track record
of this course and institution. We look forward to
meeting them again in the near future – hopefully
to hear of their further success for many years to
come.
I would like to close in wishing them every success
as they embark on their onward creative journey – bonne chance!

6 Our Work
Come and see what we’ve been losing sleep over.
This section contains the collection of work from the graduating students of BA (Hons) Design for Industry and Transportation Design 2014. This body of work approaches a wide variety of sectors, disciplines and problems, included are:
classic ID product offerings, new experiences, services and design probes amongst others. All of which utilise the design skills and techniques which we have acquired via 4 years of study and placements whilst at Northumbria University.

inSPIREinSPIRE is a retail skills improvement programme designed to save the high street from the growth of online shopping by training retail employees so that they can re-energise their businesses. The programme is designed to ensure that training is self-sustaining post-workshop, delivering long-term improvements. inSPIRE’s innovative
training workshops were co-created, trialled and tested with retail experts and employees in a real-world commercial setting for 2 months. Collaborators noticed measurable improvements with positive customer feedback and as a result the programme continues to be implemented today.

Wear Science, Be Cool.Does proper gait style aff ect human life style in a positive way? The answer is ‘Yes, it does.’ Correct posture and gait help reduce the risk of spinal disc disorder and also infl uence fi rst impressions greatly. Therefore there are a number of shoes which cannot meet those requirements except high-heels. Women are
willing to wear high-heels to look more attractive than others, even if high-heels worsen their health. They suff er from supinated and pronated foot posture. For them, it is necessary to design orthotic footwear, which could meet both needs for the areas of fashion and science.

The Great DNA MachineThe Great DNA Machine is all about imagination and possibility. By understanding what is possible today we can inform the future, and fuelled by the insight that DNA can be used to store digital data, the Great DNA Machine is intended to provoke viewer reaction, particularly confusion and uncertainty. It is a
manifestation of what contemporary science might produce if DNA data storage technology was commonplace. Inspired by the speculative and conceptual designs of Anthony Dunne, Fiona Raby and Bruce Sterling, the Great DNA Machine is merely a mysterious edifice to a possible future reality.

LENSLENS is a design probe that re-examines traditional lighting systems by deconstructing it, giving the user systematic control over the refraction and diffusion of light. It is constructed by using planoconvex lenses and Smart LED spot lights, which work in a symbiotic relationship, making light the revelation itself, rather than
merely the bearer of the revelation. LENS celebrates the ephemeral joy of light. Taking the fundamental finding from this design probe and giving them a commercial application shows how the industry can bring future technologies and new lighting archetypes to the consumer market .

Speech Bubble‘Speech Bubble’ is a tool to help young people positively reflect on their stammer and realise that it’s not just about speech. The reflection process helps them think about their speech as well as the contributing factors such as their emotions, confidence and feelings of holding back. Going through this process generates them a personalised
‘Speech Bubble’ which is a visual representation of their stammer. This takes the stammer out of their mind and onto their screen making it easier to talk about it. The online community provides a safe place to do this, where other users gather together, and share their ‘Speech Bubble’.

Listen CarefullyA redefined product and brand experience to break the stigma surrounding hearing aids. Hearing loss is a natural part of ageing which affects 40% of over 40’s in the UK. However, those who could benefit from hearing aids are often deterred through the elderly stereotypes, negative
“beige-box” designs and avenues available to acquire the device. Listen Carefully addresses this issue through each touch-point in the customer journey to provide an accessible, personable and desirable alternative. The ultimate goal being to translate hearing aids into a fashionable accessory.

NiMo Smart-watchWe spend so much time on our mobile phones that we often miss what is truly important to us: family, friends and places. NiMO is designed to bring people back to the world they love and to keep people involved and connected
with the world around them rather than the information on our mobile phones. NiMO does this by listening to its surroundings; where it is, who its with, and what they’re doing and alerts you to what you might be missing.

The Community ToiletThe recent gang rape and hanging of two teenage girls whilst defecating in the open in Uttar Pradesh, India, shows the explicitly important link between sanitation and safety for women. The events also highlight the challenging attitudes towards sanitation as Jack Sim, World Toilet Organisation founder explains,
“There has to be a market for toilets. Right now there is a need for toilets but not a demand.” The community toilet aims to address this issue by actively engaging the community in the creation of the toilet space. This creates a sense of ownership and pride, the key elements to making a sanitation project a success.

ReplayAlzheimer’s disease causes a severe decline in memory. This results in sufferers losing their identity and sense of self. Replay aims to tackle this by taking a pre-emptive approach to the disease. Using contemporary technology, it promotes users to create a collection of meaningful memories throughout their lifetime. This
collection of memories would then be vital if an illness such as Alzheimer’s disease was to strike. Replay understands a realistic need for curating digital media for the average person but more importantly a way for Alzheimer’s disease sufferers to communicate their past to themselves and the people around them.

dots.Today, 1 in 4 people in the UK are obese, and the biggest factor to blame is the high sugar content in our diets. Dots (delicious, organic, true, stevia) combats this by creating awareness of a healthy natural sugar alternative called stevia. Stevia is a plant native to South America and in its natural form can be 300x sweeter
than sugar, yet contains no calories. Dots are present in two markets. Firstly they off er their own range of straight sugar-to-stevia swap products. Secondly they represent a pure standard of stevia, encouraging other brands to be marked with dots.

digital / balancedigital / balance is a movement towards a future society with control over technology and constant connectivity. The movement explores diff erent avenues within design to engage the younger generation with the concept of digital detoxifi cation. What began as a campaign to create awareness of our increasing digital dependency,
stimulated the design of a future service that encourages people to reconnect with their true self and natural environment within everyday life. In doing so, digital / balance aims to prevent the future scenario of total disconnection by promoting harmonious balance between the digital and physical world.

gender anonymity, freedom to play and protection from the judgement of others. The Gender Cleanse stickers encourage a protest movement against harmful stereotyping in shop aisles. ALESCA HypercarThe aim of this project was to create a bespoke, ultra luxury, British Hypercar. I started by creating a brand with a minimalistic identity; which could be used for more than just automotive products. The exterior design of the car is a balance between classic automotive design and modern, minimalistic surfaces.
Simplicity and bespoke materials are key features of the interior; the design is a modern twist on the classic veneered dashboard. Overall the vehicle is designed to stand out from the current Hypercar market and push the boundaries of automotive design.

Gas Turbine RacerMotorsport in recent years has become increasingly strict, slowing and restricting technological progress. This vehicle is intended for a new classifi cation of Motorsport which shifts focus to alternative power sources and technologies
that have previously been banned in Motorsport. Less strict regulations will allow the creation of a vehicle with uncompromised performance that has been shaped by aerodynamics.
