Scholarship recipients will be required to: • Maintain a high level of achievement in their chosen field of music study;• Select the classroom Music Specialist elective until the end of Year 10;• Be a member of instrumental/vocal ensembles;• Be fully supportive of, and contribute to, the musical life of the College.
Scholarships are awarded for the remainder of thetime the student attends the College. Scholarshiprecipients will be reviewed annually.

Scholarships
Students will be required to participate in weekly instrumental music lessons, which incur a tuition fee (these lessons can either be with Carey music tutors or with existing external tutors). Instrumental hire fees are not included in the scholarship, but may be arranged through the College if the student does not have their own instrument.

Instruments Available
Our highly respected Music Department offers education in a variety of genres, including Contemporary Popular Music, Western Art/Classical Music, Jazz Music and Musical Theatre.
Students participate in a variety of music ensembles and bands, and are provided with multiple opportunities to perform during the year – on-site, across Perth and Western Australia, and in National Competitions.
Carey Baptist College has active connections with WAAPA (Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts), UWA Conservatorium of Music and the James Morrison Academy, with many of our Music students accepted into these tertiary institutions for their graduation.

Entrance to this selective program and the awarding ofscholarships is based on the performance in an aptitude testand an audition. The test is produced by the AustralianCouncil for Educational Research and used by over 100 Secondary schools in Australia and internationally. Thestudent’s Year 5 NAPLAN results and most recent school report are also taken into account as part of the selectionprocess.
Equal weighting is given to an audition which takes place theweek following the test. This comprises two contrasting piecesof the student’s own choosing, sight-reading, aural test and a brief interview. The minimum level of musical standardexpected for the scholarship applicant is AMEB Grade 2 orsimilar. It is not necessary that a formal qualification has been attained to apply for this program.
Entrance to the Program
The Gifted and Talented Music Specialist pathwayprovides students with the opportunity to participate in Music in Year 7 and continue in the program untilthe end of Year 10. In Year 11 and 12, students cancontinue with Music as an ATAR subject.
The Music Specialist students are streamed into a Specialistgroup as part of their Performing Arts elective; and are required to attend an after-school ensemble/band one day per week. Students in this program will participate in thefull Year 7 program and can also be a part of the STEMprogram.
