GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have plane to slightly convex slopes with gradients of less than 2 percent primarily on the deltaic portions of glacial lake plains. They are on a few outwash plains. The Fieldon soils formed in loamy and sandy lacustrine or outwash sediments that are dominated by fine and very fine sand and that are commonly stratified. Loamy glacial till or silty lacustrine sediments commonly underlie these sediments at depths ranging from 40 to 120 inches. These sediments are of the Des Moines lobe of the Late Wiscon-sinan glaciation. Mean annual precipitation is 26 to 30 inches, and mean annual temperature is 45 to 48 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Dassel, Darfur, and Grogan soils which formed in sediments similar to those of the Fieldon soils and which are in a drainage sequence with the Fieldon soils. The very poorly drained Dassel soils are in depressions and swales. The poorly drained Darfur soils are on ter-rain that is similar to that of the Fieldon soils. The moderately well and well drained Grogan soils are on slight rises. The moderately well and somewhat poorly drained, sandy Litchfield soils and the somewhat excessively drained, sandy Lasa soils are associated in some places.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderate and moderately rapid in the upper part and rapid in the lower part.

Soil Descriptions

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Swanlake, Clarion, Omsrud, Nicollet, Delft and Webster soils. The well drained Swanlake soils have a mollic epipedon. The well drained Clarion and Omsrud soils have a mollic epipedon and are not calcar-eous in the upper part. Delft and Webster soils are poorly drained and on footslopes and swales. Nicollet soils are on lower summits or sideslope positions and are somewhat poorly drained.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is moderately slow to very high. Permeability is moderate.

DICKINSON SERIES - Soil # 27B

The Dickinson series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in glacial or alluvial deposits that have been reworked by wind on uplands and stream terraces. Permeability is moderately rapid in the upper part and rapid in the lower part. Slopes range from 0 to 30 per-cent. Mean annual temperature is about 50 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 31 inches.

TYPICAL PEDON: Dickinson fine sandy loam with a convex slope of 3 percent - cultivated.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Dickinson soils are on convex slopes of the uplands and to a lesser extent on stream terraces and outwash areas. Slopes range from 0 to 30 percent. Dickinson soils formed in moderately coarse-textured glacial or alluvial sediments reworked by wind. Differences in texture in the material with depth are related to sorting of material rather than soil development. Mean annual tem-perature ranges from 47 to 54 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 34 inches. Frost free days range from 145 to 180. Elevations above sea level range from 600 to 1500 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: In the uplands they are on landscapes with Clarion, Kenyon, Ostrander, Ocheye-dan, and Fostoria soils. These soils contain less sand in the subsoil and substratum. Near major stream valleys the loess-derived Tama, Marshall, Sharpsburg, and Otley soils are adjacent to small areas of Dickinson soils. These loess-derived soils have a lower sand content and contain more clay in the solum than Dickinson soils. They are associated with the Sparta soils and the Lamont soils on uplands and on stream terraces. Other associated soils on terraces are the Dakota and Waukegan soils. Dickinson soils form a biosequence with the Lamont soils. Dakota and Waukegan soils have sand and gravel at depths less than 40 inches. Lamont, Dakota, and Waukegan soils are on similar landscape positions or at slightly lower elevations than the Dickinson soils. Sparta soils tend to be at slightly higher elevations.
