In December it is getting colder. The days are shorter and the nights are longer. It snows a lot. Children play with snowballs and make snowmen. Christmas is coming.

Christmas is coming…Christmas is coming…Before Christmas we

decorate our houses with flashing lights and other decorations and put balls, angels, lights on a Christmas tree. There is a big star at the top of the Christmas tree. Our town also ‘wears’ Christmas ‘clothes’ – bright colourful lights and things.

Christmas EveChristmas Eve Christmas Eve is very

important for us. In the evening all the family get together. When the first star appears in the sky, Christmas Eve Supper starts. Before supper father reads a quotation from the Bible about the birth of Jesus and then members of the family break a wafer and wish each other health, happiness and joy. On the table there is usually a plate for a stranger and hay under the tablecloth.

dishes on the table – carp, boiled dough packed with cabbage, pasta with poppy seeds, herrings, cabbage and mushrooms, beetroot soup, and other things

We sing Christmas Carols…We sing Christmas Carols…

After the Christmas Eve Supper we open presents waiting for us under the Christmas tree. We listen to and sing the carols. At midnight we go to church to attend Christmas Midnight Mass called ‘Pasterka’ (it means ‘shepards’ night’).
