For more than a century we have been a family-owned busi-

ness. We have secured a foothold on the market not least

because we are reliable and innovative. The motto of my

grandfather, who founded the business in 1912, is still applicable

today: Progress as tradition. We not only keep what is worth

preserving but take advantage of new developments in good

time. Our product portfolio reflects this guiding principle: From

conventional, classic switches to sustainable building auto-

mation, we offer solutions for all areas of a modern electrical

installation, and that in a consistent, stylish design. Close con-

tacts with our partners in commerce, trade and architecture

are an important condition for our success. We always strive

to offer our customers the best-possible solutions – worldwide.

Harald Jung,

Managing Partner

“ For three generations we have been creating something special at JUNG.”

1912

In 1919, Albrecht Jung extended the production facilities

by acquiring an old school building and a greenhouse.

Setting up a business in the cellar

In 1912, Albrecht Jung laid the foundation for our success story

by founding his own business. The forty-year-old electrician had

many innovative ideas. To turn his ideas into reality, he rented

some cellar rooms not far from his home and set up shop there.

Inventiveness is the future

Progress as tradition

We have always maintained innovativeness. Thus, modern

switches are adapted to current technological requirements as

well as processes and technologies in the modern Smart Home.

The pull switch with 1/8 rotation was one of our first patents.

This principle of a short actuating path is the basis for all

the company’s switch designs to date.

Interview with Harald Jung

Harald Jung,

Managing Partner

JUNG has been a successfully managed fam-

ily business for over a century. What are the

most important ingredients in the recipe for

success?

Harald Jung: The enjoyment in doing what we

do, the dynamic in working together and trust

in our work are certainly significant factors. In

addition, there is close customer contact and

with it good knowledge of the market and

the requirements of our customers. Our JUNG

"Made in Germany" quality is highly appreci-

ated worldwide.

A quality label confirmed by the Technical

Control Board (TÜV).

Harald Jung: We actually achieve a large part

of the added value here in the region around

Schalksmühle. Over 90 % of our products are

made in Germany. Thus, we always remem-

ber our roots.

But at times you surely feel the pressure to

move to Asia to produce more cheaply there?

Harald Jung: No, I don’t feel any pressure to

produce there. We are competitive due to

investing in automation for large volumes as

well as flexible manufacturing systems to pro-

duce small, customer-specific batches of high

quality. Although we are very successful at the

international level, many of our long-stand-

ing suppliers and partners are in Germany,

the Sauerland region and many even in our

immediate vicinity in Schalksmühle. With a

clear commitment to these sites, we contrib-

ute considerably to the economic growth

and securing jobs in the region. For us,

maximising profit or thinking in terms of

quarterly reports is not a priority. Rather, we

follow a long-term approach, even across

generations – people come before switches.

Does this mean that environmental protection

and sustainable production are long-running

topics?

Harald Jung: Absolutely. Climate and resource

protection have long been an essential as-

pect of our business. Sustainability is one of

the greatest challenges of our time. This has

always been our policy and priority for gener-

ations. By committing to produce in Germany,

we rely on the principle of short distances

and eco-friendly production. Even our prod-

ucts contribute to climate protection: Intelli-

gent controls for Smart-Home applications

and KNX technologies help to effectively

reduce the energy demand and with it the

CO2 emissions.

You just referred to it: The term “Smart Home”

is on everyone’s lips today. Everything is be-

coming more digital and more networked.

Will classical mechanical switches still exist

in future?

Harald Jung: Actually, I am convinced that

the classic switch will last. However, it will

have to adapt to technical developments.

How exactly it will look like is hard to say at

the moment. I presume that households will

be more networked in the future, with some-

times very different components. We are

well equipped already for this with our KNX

solutions: The push-button sensors F 40 and

F 50, for example, communicate both with

the Smart Visu Server and the Visu Pro Server

and can be integrated optimally into every

interior due to the JUNG switch design.

Thank you for the interview.

Interview with Martin Herms

Martin Herms,

Technical Manager

To stand one’s ground as a leading, medium-

sized business in the electrical industry for

over a century one must not only consider

new technical developments but also take the

lead. What is JUNG’s driving force to create

new products?

Martin Herms: The fact that JUNG has estab-

lished and asserted itself as an innovative

premium supplier over such a long time is due

first and foremost to the people who work

here, people who have made the right deci-

sions at the right time. Employees, executives

and the owner family who have had a good

feel for which products, technology, markets

and also business-strategic decisions for se-

curing the future of the business are decisive.

Progress as tradition in fact.

Which decisions were particularly decisive

in the process?

Martin Herms: These strategic decisions

include the early focus on premium quality

combined with functionality, user friendliness

and product design. In the 70s, the electrical

installation became electronic and JUNG

decided very early, as the joint founder of

Insta, to participate in what would currently

be called a start-up in order to develop a

new market segment. In the 90s, JUNG was

a founding member of Instabus, now KNX,

which has become a worldwide standard in

networked building system technology. With

the radio technology, JUNG laid the founda-

tion for future Smart-Home systems already

at the turn of the century.

And the future?

Martin Herms: We have continuously devel-

oped our innovation culture and the process-

es to help us make the correct decisions also

in future. For an idea becomes an innovation

only if it is successful on the market. Market

analyses, product roadmaps, listening to our

customers and cross-subject-area discussions

help us make product decisions. But one

should keep in mind that in the end innova-

tions are made by creative employees.

How important are specialist trades in JUNG’s

product development and orientation?

Martin Herms: For every product idea, we

pose the same question: “Which customer

problem does this product solve?”. And our

customer is primarily the specialist trades-

person because the electrical installation

of a building is a professional job, regardless

of whether it involves a single-family house,

residential area, factory floor, hotel or hospi-

tal. The craftsman must be happy to recom-

mend and install the products and systems

because he can rely on the quality and

durability and gets training and advice from

JUNG Service. Innovations such as Plug & Light

or LB-Management are endorsed by the cus-

tomers who install these products and in turn

by their customers, the building owners.

Which trends will grow in the near future in

the Smart-Home area and how will JUNG

confront them?

Martin Herms: Completely new business

models will be developed. The way we build,

install, render services, use customer data

and how our products reach the customers

are put to test by digitalisation. The product

systems, processes and services generating

customer benefits and contributing to added

value will prevail. These changes are basically

comparable with developments that JUNG

has successfully overcome in the past. The

difference with digital transformation of

whole industries is how radical and fast it

can be. For the next product generations,

we will continue to rely on technologies such

as KNX and Bluetooth and ensure that the

fast-changing IoT world can be conveniently

and safely integrated.

Thank you for the interview.

Warranty for quality

As a visible element, the light switch connects

the electrical installation with the room. It

must therefore meet both aesthetic and func-

tional requirements. The eye-catching quality

of the surface hides the many mechanical

parts inside the switch. The applicable stand-

ard requires 40,000 switch operations in the

test. Our quality standards require 50,000

operations – they are monitored in the cur-

rent range and also taken as the basis when

developing new products. We have always

produced the inserts and frames from the

same material. This requires a different tool

for each of over 200 different products. The

production processes are exactly adapted to

the properties of the individual materials.

Our products are manufactured at the two company sites in

Schalksmühle and Lünen, for which we received the certificate

“Made in Germany” from TÜV Nord already in 2011.

Smart technology for sustainable construction

Sustainability begins for us already at the

planning stage: We think in generations

instead of short-term success. With our com-

mitment to produce in Germany, we rely on

the principle of short distances and environ-

mentally-friendly production. Furthermore,

we have been working for many years on

solutions for building and operating build-

ings sustainably, based on automation with

KNX. The technology contributes to signifi-

cant reductions in emission-related effects on

the environment and resource consumption.

We have been a member of the Deutsche

Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB)

(German Sustainable Building Council) since

January 2009. With our expertise in all

aspects of modern building control, we are

active participants. A good example is the

Futurium in the heart of Berlin. The Smart

Building on the Spree is stage, museum,

forum and future lab on three floors and

around 3,200 square metres of exhibition

space. The building meets all the standards

of a minimum energy building: Up on the

roof a sea of collector panels, both photo-

voltaic and solar heating – inside, the KNX

technology. The worldwide standard is fit

for the future and combines sustainable

aspects such as reliability and efficiency.

Climate and resource protection has long been an essential

issue. Sustainability is one of the greatest challenges of our

time. A task we happily take on.

The Futurium, Berlin. Its futuristic construction concept by the Berlin-based Richter and Musikowski Architects is based on pure forms and openness.

“ We don't just think globally – we also act globally.”

Michael Eyrich,

Commercial Manager

Interview with Michael Eyrich

JUNG is a medium-sized company rooted in

the Sauerland region. How do you reconcile

the attachment to your home region with

global growth?

Michael Eyrich: The attachment to the home

region shows in our corporate values, quality

standards and the fundamental decision that

development and production continues to be

done almost exclusively in Germany. We have

consistently grown globally in recent years,

combining our “Made in Germany” quality

with an open-mindedness anchored in the

entire organisation: After all, the path to inter-

national markets is more than just a business

necessity.

How do you describe the cooperation be-

tween the German parent company Albrecht

JUNG GmbH & Co. KG and the international

subsidiaries and offices?

Michael Eyrich: After a test phase of generally

two to four years for new markets, we usually

set up permanent structures, i.e. our own sub-

sidiary. These always include logistics along

with sales and marketing. Quite recently we

have been extending this concept with local

structures which also allow the enhancement

and individualisation of products. The role of

the German Albrecht JUNG GmbH & Co. KG

in this process is to train the sales subsidiaries

acting decentrally and independently in ful-

filling their tasks and, if necessary, to support

them in concrete cases.

Are there differences in the turnover of the

various JUNG systems abroad?

Michael Eyrich: Yes, very large actually.

Based on our design lines, almost every

market is different. But the openness to tech-

nologies such as building automation also

differs tremendously in individual cases.

In which markets does JUNG see further

potential in the future?

Michael Eyrich: As a result of our high inter-

national focus, we are already strongly rep-

resented in the world. In the medium to long

term, large markets such as the USA and

Japan could still be interesting, even though

trade barriers are very high.

Which challenges is JUNG facing internation-

ally and how will you master them?

Michael Eyrich: Besides entering and devel-

oping markets, I believe it is imperative to

improve the international orientation and way

of thinking in all functional areas and establish

it sustainably. This implies that we approach

not only new markets with an open mind,

but also people and cultures and think about

which added value we can offer the locals

with our products and services. The intensive

exchange with our customers and interna-

tional colleagues is the decisive factor here.

Thank you for the interview.
