Busch Gardens Trip

•We arrive at the park at 9:00 AM. •Our class is going to split up in into two groups to go separate ways. •We will need to meet up • at 11:00 AM for the Iceploration show in the

Moroccan Palace Theater,• at 1:00 PM for lunch at the Crown Colony House, • and at 5:00 PM at the Myombe Reserve to get on the

bus to leave.

????????????????????????????????

How are we going to figure out how to meet up at the

appropriate places?

Page 5: We are going Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL!!! Well, not really but let’s pretend anyway…

Let’s look at the map…

•Where is the Moroccan Palace Theater? • (G5)

•Where is the Crown Colony House? • (F6)

•Where is the Myombe Reserve? • (F4)

Group 1 wants to start out at the Congo

•Where is the Congo? • (A3)

•We said the Moroccan Palace Theater is (G5) what direction will Group 1 need to travel to get to the Moroccan Palace Theater for the Iceploration show? • (Over to the right 2 and Down 6)

Group 1 wants to leave the Theater and go to Egypt

•Where is Egypt? • (F6)

•What direction will Group 1 need to travel to get to Egypt? • (Over to the right 1 and Up 1)

•What direction will Group 1 need to travel to meet for lunch at the Crown Colony House?• (trick – lunch is in Egypt)

Now, Group 1 wants to visit Timbuktu after lunch.

•Where is Timbuktu? • (C4)

•What direction will Group 1 need to travel to get to Timbuktu? • (Over to the left 2 and up 3)

•What direction will Group 1 need to travel to get to the Myombe Reserve to get ready to leave? • (Just down 3)

Ok. Now it’s your turn. Group 2 wants to start at Egypt, then travel to Jungala, and finally finish in the Congo.

So what are we doing talking about maps in our math class?

• Believe it or not, we use a number map in math.

• This number map is called a coordinate plane and our Busch Gardens map was an example.

Page 14: We are going Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL!!! Well, not really but let’s pretend anyway…

So what !?!

• Do you like playing video games?• Graphic artists use it to define positions on computer displays

and in virtual reality (VR) renderings.

• The system is also employed in mathematics, physics, engineering, navigation, robotics , economics, and other sciences.

So what is a coordinate plane?

•Well, it’s a graph or map made up of two number lines (remember these?) also called axes.

Page 16: We are going Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL!!! Well, not really but let’s pretend anyway…

Coordinate Plane

• The coordinate plane has two axes and the point at which the two lines meet (or intersect) is called the origin and is shown as (0,0). • The horizontal line (left

and right) is called the x-axis and vertical line (up and down) is called the y-axis.

Page 17: We are going Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL!!! Well, not really but let’s pretend anyway…

Coordinate Pair

• The pair of numbers that match up with the location on the map is called a coordinate pair.

• The first number (x-coordinate) in the pair corresponds with the distance traveled from the origin along the x-axis (right or left)

• The second number (y-coordinate) in the pair corresponds with the distance traveled along the y-axis (up or down).

Page 18: We are going Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL!!! Well, not really but let’s pretend anyway…

Lets try this out

• Looking at your coordinate plane:

• What are the coordinates for the orange dot• (3,4)

• What are the coordinates for the pink dot• (0,7)

• What color is the dot at (4, -2)• Blue

• What color is the dot at (-4,2)• Green
