education synergy project (esp)
The education synergy project (esp), initiated by members of SDG’s education Funders group in 2011, completed its planning work in 2013. The eSP Leadership Team – together with representatives from education, business, law enforcement, government, and nonprofits – met seven times to discuss the need for a regional education leadership organization. in October, the “project” became the education synergy alliance, a new entity pursuing career and college readiness, early education, and STeM/STeAM projects under the continued leadership of Laura Kohn, an education reform expert who facilitated eSP together with SDG’s executive Director Nancy Jamison. The education Funders still meet periodically to learn about needs and best practices in education funding.
coming home to stay (chts), a unique program to assist the formerly incarcerated returning to San Diego’s city Heights and Diamond Neighborhoods with becoming productive citizens and remaining crime free, entered its fifth year of operation in 2013. SDG’s facilitation of the cHTS funders’ collaboration ended, and cHTS continued operation under the Jacobs center for Neighborhood innovation as a program of community service agencies working with a dedicated team of transition advocates and peer mentors.
homelessness Working Groupin October 2013, the Homelessness Working Group transitioned from SDG to become part of the growing group of public and private partners supporting the United Way of San Diego county’s activities to end homelessness in our region.

social equity Fundersin 2013 the Social equity Funders explored ways to support its overarching goal to “increase equitable access to the opportunities that produce economic, social and physical well being.” At the heart of this group is an interest in systems change through advocacy and civic participation strategies. Several of the group’s members helped a coalition of San Diego community groups apply for the Open Society Foundations’ Open Places initiative, which will bring $1.9 million over two years to our region in support of policies that promote social and economic stability for the region’s most vulnerable residents.

san diego Workforce Funders collaborative
in March 2013, San Diego Workforce Funders collaborative (SDWFc) members The Parker Foundation and Leichtag Foundation funded a report by the University of San Diego, center for education and Policy titled Strategic Direction in Support of Collaboration of Community Colleges and San Diego Workforce Partnership, which addresses how our regional workforce and community college systems should be working more collaboratively to resolve workforce needs in San Diego county. Subsequently, SDWFc approved funding for implementation of some of the specific recommendations within that report. The SDWFc also developed a partnership with UcSD extension and the Health Workforce initiative (HWi) to work with community Health clinics in a career Training Ladder project designed to facilitate systems change for the role of medical assistants in community health centers.

With the support of a grant from Qualcomm incorporated, the Transition Age Youth Funders met four times in 2013 with a continued focus on youth
aging out of the foster care system. They learned about efforts by the San Diego Youth Development Office to coordinate local resources and the Sierra Health Foundation’s work with “cross over youth,” as well as information about an emerging effort led by the S. Bernstein Fund at the Jewish community Foundation to convene a collective impact style approach in our region to supporting youth aging out of the foster care system.

Military Family support Working GroupThroughout 2013, members of the Military Family Support Working Group (MFSWG) met monthly to learn about the needs of military personnel and their families in San Diego as they transition out of service. Specific focus areas included increased service coordination, building capacity and enhancing communication about the challenges and opportunities for iraq and Afghanistan veterans. The funders
supported the progress of the Military transition support project (Mtsp) – a cross-sector community planning process arising from the group’s early learning about the needs of military personnel, which has resulted in a comprehensive plan to better coordinate community resources for veterans and their families and connect those resources to service members as early in the transition process as possible. One
2013 highlight included an event in October attended by representatives of more than 50 veterans interest groups to collect feedback about the then-draft plan. The MTSP planning work was primarily funded by blue shield of california Foundation, with additional support from WebMd health Foundation and rancho santa Fe Foundation.

There were five member-driven programs in 2013, including three meetings of the corporate philanthropy Learning community.
More than 160 grantmakers convened for our 2013 Annual conference, held at the San Diego central Library in the heart of Downtown San Diego. The Library is a transformative community space that itself was built through a creative combination of public dollars and philanthropic investment.
Learning opportunities included two plenary sessions featuring Grant oliphant, president and ceO of the pittsburgh Foundation and akaya Windwood, president of the rockwood Leadership institute. There were six breakout sessions about a mix of philanthropic practices and giving area topics, as well as six “Philchat” speakers modeled after the popular TeDTalk style presentations.
Two spoken word poets surprised and inspired attendees as they opened and closed the conference day.

SDG executive Director Nancy Jamison and Funder collaboration consultant Jennifer James co-authored a post for the Foundation center’s blog, Philanthropy News Digest, about “Minding the ps & ts” of facilitating funder collaborations.

SDG continued to serve as a clearing house of timely, relevant and targeted information about the field of philanthropy, delivered straight to members’ email inboxes via four quarterly newsletters – the SDG Update, Public Policy Bulletin, Corporate Link and Family Ties – and a quarterly “new resources” email providing the latest reports and other tools for grantmakers.
SDG’s emails consistently generate open and click-through rates that are higher than the standard for association and nonprofit organizations.
SDG was quoted or mentioned in 11 media stories, including KPBS radio and television interviews about the former coming Home to Stay member collaboration and several stories about the Military Transition Support Project’s efforts to help returning iraq and Afghanistan military personnel.
By the end of 2013, SDG’s social media presence on Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin had grown to nearly 800 followers and page likes and initiated engagement with important audiences not reached through other, more traditional forms of communication.

ADDiTiONAL UPDATeSin 2013, the first installment of a two-year dues increase of nearly 15 percent was implemented. The increase was approved after a lengthy business plan development process and careful consideration by the Board of Directors in order to build support for SDG’s expanding levels and scope of service and prepare the organization for long-term sustainability. it was only the second dues increase since SDG incorporated in 1999.
Financial reports will be available after the 2013 financial review is complete. Thank you to our members, grantors and sponsors for their investments in SDG and San Diego philanthropy.
SDG proudly publicized the University of San Diego caster Family center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic research report, “the Grantmaking report: Foundation Giving in the san diego region,” an update to data first published in 2008.
