For 10 years All Students Matter has provided trained volunteers to support teachers in the Ravenswood City School District classrooms to

improve their students’ literacy, math and social/emotional skills.

I have seen many positive changes at All Students Matter during this decade. I am both humbled and proud of our growth and progress.

All Students Matter continues to serve all the East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park elementary school teachers and students. We are working where the need is greatest, helping “our students” meet their potential.

All Students Matter looks forward to another 10 years of supporting the Ravenswood City School District students we adore. We believe that all students matter and all students deserve an equal opportunity to receive a quality education. Together we can make this happen.

Our Relationships Are EssentialAs an ASM volunteer, I was assigned to tutor a 3rd grade student who was bright in math, but had difficulty reading, and was disruptive in the classroom. He also had emotional challenges resulting from the recent death of his father and constant moving between multiple households. We built a strong bond as we worked on his reading one-on-one or in small groups. I continued to work with him into 4th and 5th grades.

He became a great writer and a calm, confident leader in his class. When I asked him what he liked most about our work together he surprised me. He never mentioned the hours of writing, reading and academics. He told me:

“Even when things get bad or sad in my life, you are there to help me feel good about myself. You are always there to help me to succeed.”

It was in this moment that it became clear. It’s not just about improving academic performance. Our relationships matter to our students. Our reliable presence matters. All students deserve this. All students matter.

“As a classroom teacher, I see the needs of all my students, which range from social, emotional, and academics to who knows what else. Sometimes I wonder if there is enough of me to give, but thankfully my ASM volunteers come and spend quality time really getting to know my students and boosting their confidence in reading and in life! I wouldn’t be able to do my job without them. Thank you, ASM volunteers!”
