Sacrificial prototypes to fuel better understanding
1We build to think. We make things real, rapidly putting ideas into action at low fidelity to discover strengths and gaps in the concept. We believe making things tangible quickly - be it physical, digital, or service - allows us to learn from experience and real user interactions, not rely on abstract theories or strategies.

Go outside the industry for analogous inspiration
2 You find the most meaningful inspiration in unexpected places. When looking to create something new, you can’t look where everyone else is looking. We also look at what we call “extreme users” – these are people outside of our mainstream audience. This enables us to gather insights quickly because people who are at the edges often have exaggerated desires and behaviors; they magnify needs that also exist in the mainstream that aren’t as visible.

Design, Test, and Learn from (& with) real people in context
3Live prototyping enables us to understand the reality of how an idea, product, or service would be used and reacted to in the “real world” - not an abstract boardroom. Sometimes we let participants know we are doing a test, other times we are undercover, and they believe the service or experience is real and finished. Often, we use “wizard of oz” techniques to fake aspects of the design interactions, without people being aware.

Include the whole team in the research immersion (including you)
4We believe that it is important for the visceral stories we experience in the field to inspire and connect deeply with both IDEO and Penguin team members. This first-hand experience inspires innovation in ways that second-hand downloads could never achieve. It is critical to the sucess of the execution of the work for both IDEO & client teams to be emotionally connected to the real-world experiences of the users we ae designing for.
