The ground was heavy and bumpy but the game kicked off under a welcome glimmer of sunshine. Bishops started full of determination with Steven Turnbull at right back dealing out some rough treatment to Sam Garvie. Minutes later the pair clashed again, with Turnbull ‘cleaning out’ young Sammy in full flight to earn an early booking. After a quarter of an hour the Railwaymen forced two corners on the right, with Justin Keegan heading the first one over and the 2nd wide. Sam Garvie and “Busted” worked the ball down the left to open up Bishops’ defence only to see the ball hacked away. On the half hour James Harwood tweaked his hamstring, he was replaced by Chris Bell, who immediately tested Jeffries in the Bishop goal. On 33 minutes, number six Drummond, gave away a free-kick, from which Chappy crossed to Bobby Moore whose header struck the foot off the post with Peter Jeffries stranded. Bishops started to get back into the game. A Wayne Gredziak header was smartly saved by Phil Naisbett and Amar Purewal shot an effort over the bar. Steven Turnbull and Henry Drummond could not fairly contain their youthful enthusiasm (they could not stop fouling) and were again, both, spoken to by the ref, Mr Sharp, without further action. The half closed with Purewal clean through on Phil Naisbett who had to be out quickly to block. Half time: 0-0. The second period started brightly. Lee Chapman was quickly into his stride, he skipped down the right before playing a wonderful cross that found Bobby Moore on the far post, Moore cleverly headed back over ‘keeper Jeffries for 1-0 to Shildon. After the goal the game came to life, with both sides creating and spurning chances. Shildon began to press hard. The game was still fast and furious when Phil Brumwell’s long clearance set Chris Bell free, one on one with Bishop’s ‘keeper only to waste a glorious chance. In the dying minutes of the game Lee Chapman found himself free on the right, he played in Chris Hughes - who had replaced Sam Garvie –only to allow another chance to be charged down by Jeffries. With not long left to play Moore picked up a needless booking for kicking the ball away. Adam Emson, with his only chance of the game, was clean through on Shildon’s goal for Phil Naisbett to prove his worth with yet another sprawling save. The final whistle sounded shortly after the final chance of the game. Lee Chapman played a through ball to Hughes who crossed it to Bell whose missed opportunity was the final kick of the game. The whole school assembled in the main hall for this marvellous occasion led by head teacher, Mrs. Dockray. The children sang their hearts out and smiled enthusiastically from beneath Edwardian caps and bonnets, before producing a rousing three cheers for their school ,which nearly lifted the roof off the old building. Gareth Howe, added his congratulations to the school and thanked the staff and all who had helped in organising the centenary events. He finished by saying “I hope that in another one hundred years Timothy Hackworth School will still be here.” Mrs. Dockray then read poem written by eight year old Freya Huntington-Brown (see right). The celebrations ended on Saturday when a general Open Day saw many former pupils and people from the town visit. The week of celebrations was a tremendous success with many of the children stating that the highlight had been when Timothy Hackworth in person had visited their classrooms on Monday. This was, in fact, a professional actor who portrayed the character to great effect and brought history to life for the pupils. An Edwardian classroom with teacher, courtesy of Beamish Museum, was set up and pupils got a taste of what lessons were like and the strict regime that existed back in those good old days. Each year group performed songs from every decade of the past one hundred years in a “Tin Tacs has Talent Show” which was lively and thoroughly enjoyed by a packed audience of parents. The Town Crier wishes to add its own congratulations to the school and everyone Invited guests and Mrs. Dockray admire the cake. Dear Editor & the People of Shildon,Shildon is a very pleasant place with some excellent views and lovely people, lets keep it this way and use bins provided for our rubbish and chewing gum. Old bikes, prams and at least one mobility walker have been chucked in towards the railway track, the council have said they can’t clean it up as it is on railway property. However, more than likely, it will be council tenants creating the mess and not people in the trains saying 'it’s Shildon, dump your rubbish out the train windows here', therefore it isn’t fair on the railway service having to clean our mess up. Perhaps Shildon Town Council could provide a

local skip for people without transport, time to dispose of their unwanted possessions properly or space in their wheelie bin for certain things. Public, be aware there are plenty of Rag-and-Bone men more than happy to collect your scrap metal, there’s no need to dump it over a fence somewhere. Recycling is good! I’ll take advantage of this opportunity to inform the people of Shildon about freecycle.org.uk, a none-profi t organisation set up to reduce landfi ll where you can have the satisfaction of giving someone your old bikes or mobility walker, anything, in fact, to someone else to happily reuse it.

Peter Metcalf, Birch Avenue.

Dear Editor,In response to the letter from the single parent complaining about Cold Weather Payments (Crier 446, 12/2/10).Firstly, thank you for your judgemental insinuation that all who are living on benefi ts do so because it’s easier to live on handouts from the government. Most who are claiming these benefi ts are doing so because they qualify and have had to fi ght for them at points. It is not easy to cope on these benefi ts, like you assume, and most of us would gladly swap you positions, so you can suffer the mental and/or physical torture each day and we will gladly go to work. You need to understand that being told you cannot ever work again shatters your life. You lose the self respect, the socialising etc that goes alongside working. Causing depression, feeling a lack of usefulness/worth and demoralisation, a very large and bitter pill to swallow, and these feelings do not subside or go

away, we just have to fi nd ways of coping which isn’t as simple and straight forward as you may think. It is evident that luckily you have not suffered this fate, however, you never know what is in the future, and therefore should not judge. Hence, if it happens to you, I hope you are shown the lack of compassion, understanding and disrespect that you are showing others. And no one helps you as there is no one to help us.Many of us have worked full time for all our lives up until having no choice but to be put on the sick. Paying for others via our taxes, be they ill or single parents or otherwise, I did not judge these people or mind contributing towards helping them, as many of us did not, due to us being compassionate and knowing individual reasons for ill health, etc. It is not our place to judge, especially when we do not know their circumstances. Most of us are from working class families and some could

say that their relatives are paying these “handouts”, should you wish to be pernickety. Not everybody who is claiming benefi ts qualify for cold weather payments. So you should understand that these folks struggle too. I pay highly (more than most I have spoken to) each month for my fuel consumption. Therefore, you do not pay for anybody’s gas. Also, if you are out everyday working, why have the gas on anyway when you could easily set the timer so that the house is warm for your child/children coming home, thus saving energy and costs? We have to wear a jumper in the house to cut costs as much as everybody else and use the timer switch to save costs. So we are just as fi nancially pressed as the working class. We cannot afford to drink, go on trips/holidays etc, so why spite us a little help. Not working is not a choice, it is an enforced decision which we cannot fi ght.

Very angry and frustrated,Name and address supplied.

Dear Editor,Is it not up to the local councils to see that the disabled in their area should have their paths cleared of snow and ice?As much as to grit some parts where it’s diffi cult, like the New Shildon area.

What is so hard about getting a wheely bin putting it on its side and put some grit in it?I asked for some to be brought as there are elderly and disabled people on the street where I live, it took twenty four hours and if I had not seen the men in the truck

it wouldn’t have been left where it was needed as some person on the phoneline in the offi ce didn’t get my address right. But there again, why havn’t the job seekers been out doing their part?Z Jackson, Dalton Crescent.

CRIER GARDEN CENTRE TRIP

As part of their campaign to help people manage their debts and stay in their homes in 2010, Sedgefi eld & District Citizens Advice Bureau is publishing the following top tips to help people manage their fi nances this New Year.Pauline Chambers, Service Manager at Sedgefi eld & District CAB said, “January and February are often stressful months of the year for families, who have to cope with the demands of paying for Christmas and increased fuel bills. This is a good time to think about how to manage your debts and talk to your lenders. The key thing is not to bury your head in the sand and don’t be embarrassed to seek help.”• Don’t panic and don’t ignore the bills. • Avoid borrowing further to try and pay off existing debt – this is likely to lead to more

problems in the long run.• Sit down and work out how much you owe and how much you need to pay your priority debts, like mortgage, rent, gas and electricity bills, and your council tax and then work out how much you need for food, travel to work and other everyday expense. • Pay your priority debts fi rst every month. Don’t fall into the trap of paying whoever shouts loudest fi rst.• Then work out how much you can pay to non-priority creditors like credit and store cards.• Talk to your creditors - don’t just stop payments without explaining why. They can sometimes be more understanding than you’d expect.• If what you have left doesn’t cover what your non-priority creditors are asking for each month, speak to them and

come to an arrangement about how much you can afford to pay them. • Only offer to pay off debts at a rate you can keep up – it is easy to be panicked into offering more than you can afford.• If you need help to do that or they won’t listen, make an appointment to see a money adviser at your local Citizens Advice Bureau. • Don’t pay for debt advice which you can get for free from your local CAB, National debtline or the Consumer Credit Counselling Service. The campaign is part of a wide range of extra support the Government is offering to struggling homeowners. More information can be found at http://mortgagehelp.direct.gov.uk/Sedgefi eld and District CAB’s own adviceline number is 0844 4994123.
