  1. 1. Western Carolina University Intramural Sports Basketball Video Review: Fouls Part 2
  2. 2. Hand Check Foul What makes this Illegal Use of the Hands/Hand Checking? Break Down: Defender puts his hand on the offensive players hip and never removes it. Going toward the basket the hand must come off! The defender moves into the shooter, with his hand still in contact with the airborne shooter. Tips for Calling This: Is the arm extended away from the defenders body? Does the defender use the hand to restrict movement; does the hand stay in contact with the offensive player? Does the defender move into the body of the offensive player; or, does the defender extend the arm further? If the answer is yes to all, we have a foul!
  3. 3. Hand Check Foul #2 What makes this a foul for Illegal Use of the Hands/Hand Check? Break Down: Anytime two (2) get on the body we have a foul! Two hands restricts movement At :16 you will see Gold #12 use both hands to restrict the offensive player from moving forward. Also, Gold #11 will commit the same foul Tips for Calling This: Watch to see if the defender uses both hands to create contact. Two hands will restrict movement.
  4. 4. High Hit (Hit on the Arm) What makes this a Foul for Hitting the Arm? Break Down Defender moves into the shooter with his arm and shoulder. Defender has his arms, out, and does not keep vertical. Shooter is hit on his left arm, while holding the ball with both hands. This action restricts the shooters movement. Tips for Calling This: All together now: OFFICIATE THE DEFENSE! See the defender: Is he moving toward the shooter? Or, does he swing his arm? Does he make contact as a result of movement? If the answer is yes to all, we have a foul.
  5. 5. Illegal Screen What makes this an illegal screen (team control push foul)? Break Down: Offensive player sets his feet (skip to 1.5 seconds) Offensive uses his arms and body to displace the defender pushing him off his spot. (Use slow motion fast forward to see frame by frame, will be at 1.75.) Making the call even easier the offensive player turns his body as the defender attempts to fight off the screen, further displacing the person being screened. (See at :02.) If, the offensive player setting the screened had continued to move forward we would still have had a foul for an illegal screen. Tips for calling an illegal screen: Offensive player moves forward (into and through the body) of the person being screened, Or, turns his hands/body while still in contact.
