Targeted learning opportunities offer flexibility to students Waukesha County Technical College’s student body is as diverse

as its programs, and as such, a one-size-fits-all education isn’t a

practical solution. Students have demanding lives outside college

that involve work, family and personal obligations. In being mindful of

students’ responsibilities, WCTC offers a range of programs – and

in multiple formats – to ensure an education can be had. Three

students/graduates personalized their education to make it work

for them. Read their success stories below.

Robyn Ludtke, Marketing graduate, class of 2012After years of working as a waitress and bartender, Robyn Ludtke returned to school in her 30s and realized she wanted a career.

As a wife and mother, she needed a program that would fit her needs. For the first few semesters, Ludtke took night classes; as she progressed in her program, she switched to days. In summers, she took general education courses online to stay on track and ensure she would finish her degree on time.

Once her involvement with college groups grew, including her role as Student Government Association (SGA) president, she needed to be one step ahead of her studies and frequently used technology – WCTC’s educational mobile app – to post assignments and projects.

“As a mom with two kids on the go, to take classes at night or online and use an app really helped me multitask and create good time management,” she said.

Being a returning student can have its challenges, according to Ludke, and she credits the WCTC community as a whole – students, faculty, advisors, financial counselors among others – in helping her meet her goals.

Now a Marketing graduate and manager of events and programs at the Waukesha County Business Alliance, she remains connected to WCTC.

“I’m fortunate to be involved with a local business and WCTC and to help them work together. I wouldn’t be where I am today without WCTC.”

Tony Schutte, Criminal Justice-Law Enforcement, current studentTony Schutte was introduced to WCTC in high school, but enrolled 10 years later in the Criminal Justice program as a full-time night student. The schedule made it possible for him to keep his day job with the family business and take classes. Initially, he chose WCTC because of its proximity to home and work; what he’s gotten from his education has been so much more than he expected.

“My academic advisor has been amazing. She helped me identify all the requirements I needed for my degree,” he said.

As a working student, he’s appreciated access to WCTC faculty and staff, that they are available at almost any time and in any capacity, as well as the real-world experience instructors bring to the classroom.

“The staff in my program is impressive. Many of the course-specific teachers, if

not all, have criminal justice backgrounds,” Schutte said, noting their hands-on teaching approach. “They have a way of getting the entire group to interact.”

To complement his program, Schutte is active with the student law enforcement organization (Kappa Theta Rho) as its president and with SGA, which promotes involvement in the WCTC community.

Schutte has used resources at WCTC to help him with mock interviews and resumes, and now, with just over a year left in his program, he has been

accepted into an internship with a local police department. Upon graduation, he will continue his education in WCTC’s 16-week police academy.

In talking with others about his program, Schutte has realized how well WCTC prepares its students. “I would do anything for WCTC.”

Sara Geszvain, Human Services Associate, current studentSara Geszvain began her education at the urging of a friend.

She needed flexibility with her already-hectic schedule so she chose Blended Options. It’s a program created with students like Geszvain in mind: those who are already balancing a career, family and education. Blended Options programs are structured into consistently scheduled, compact segments, for ease of planning.

Geszvain operated a successful childcare business for the past decade – begun so she could work and take care of children’s (her own and others’) needs, while earning an income. Her business grew, but the time had come for her education to take a front seat.

Now in her second semester of the Human Services Associate program, Geszvain already has felt WCTC’s positive effects. So much so, that her family is following in her footsteps: her husband, son and two other family members are enrolling at WCTC this fall.

The experience and focus on career building has been a huge confidence boost for Geszvain. “I went for education and now I know being career-minded is life-changing,” she said. “I’m always shooting for more.”

For adults interested in returning to college and taking classes in a timeframe that suits their job, family and personal needs, Waukesha County Technical College’s Blended Options programs may be the perfect fit.

Blended Options is designed for adults with some college, yet no degree, who are looking to maintain a work schedule while attending school in the evening. Unlike traditionally scheduled programs, these are organized into short, manageable segments (for example, one course every six to eight weeks).

Core courses are guaranteed to be available on the same night per week for the duration of a student’s program, thus ensuring a consistent schedule. General education coursework may need to be completed outside of the set program schedule.

The programs offer technology-proficient students who have some academic and work experience the chance to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in two years or less. Additionally, opportunities to obtain credit for prior learning are also available.

“We’re excited to offer Blended Options programs for those who want to come back to complete their college degree,” said Denine Rood, vice president of Learning. “People lead busy lives and before these options became available, it was difficult for working adults to fit completing an entire degree into their schedule.”

Programs offered within the Blended Options format include Early Childhood Education, Human Services Associate, Marketing and Supervisory

Management. All of the programs meet quality-based certification/accreditation requirements and credits are transferrable to select four-year universities.

Because programs offered in this format are rigorous and fast-paced, and in-class time is compressed, students will have significant work to complete outside the classroom using a variety of learning technologies. These programs are designed for those who have a high career commitment, have a high level of self-motivation and have strong time management skills.

In addition to required coursework, Blended Options students take a mandatory seminar class that prepares them for success and explores learning strategies and technology tools used in the courses. This class focuses on strategies such as active and collaborative learning methods, technology skills critical to learning in an online learning environment and the development of a career plan for success.

For more information on Blended Options and to find out if this style of learning is right for you, visit www.wctc.edu/blended-options.

WCTC’s four Schools – the School of Applied Technologies, School of Business, School of Health and School of Protective & Human Services – offer a diverse collection of program offerings. Whether an associate degree, technical diploma or apprenticeship, all programs offer students comprehensive training that provides them with skills that can be immediately applied to the workforce.

Associate of Applied Science DegreeAn Associate of Applied Science Degree combines technical skills classes with general education classes. Full-time students can typically complete a 66- to 70-credit program within two years. Several transfer agreements exist with four-year colleges and universities, often allowing students to begin their baccalaureate studies at junior-level standing. Credits are more readily transferable in Associate of Applied Science Degree programs than in diploma programs.

Technical DiplomaTechnical Diploma programs focus on hands-on learning of occupational skills. They can take as little as one semester to complete (3–16 credits), one year to complete (17–36 credits) or two years to complete (61–67 credits). Additionally, for many Technical Diploma programs,

WCTC offers a wide variety of academic degree programs

just one more year of studies is needed in a related program to earn an associate degree.

ApprenticeshipApprentices learn a trade by practical experience under a skilled worker – generally bound by a contract for a set time between the apprentice (employee) and employer or joint apprenticeship training committee. The contract details areas of training, hours of training and wages during the training period.

While WCTC provides related apprenticeship instruction, the student does not need to apply to the College; it is separate from a traditional college program in that the State of Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development oversees the apprenticeship system.

General apprenticeship information can be found at www.wisconsinapprenticeship.org.

discovery-based, hands-on program introduces students to aspects of science they may not have considered, providing them with a strong foundation for future college and career success.

“The Project Lead the Way curriculum is very broad based,” said Mike Shiels, dean of the School of Applied Technologies. “The advantage is students are getting exposed to things they may not otherwise be exposed to, and they gain familiarity in those disciplines.”

Another benefit of PLTW is potential college credit. For example, those taking a high school PLTW Digital Electronics course can earn credit for WCTC’s Digital Electronics I course, which can be applied toward either the College’s Electrical Engineering Technology or Electronics Technology program.

“And those credits might make the difference as to where STEM students choose to go to school,” Shiels said.

In addition, if a student decides to continue his or her education after earning an associate degree, credits earned in WCTC’s Electronics Technology program and Electrical Engineering Technology program (accredited by ETAC of ABET) can transfer to several area four-year colleges and universities at junior-level standing.

Some of today’s fastest-growing careers are in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). And as more teens discover the impact engineering and technology have on their everyday lives, more are interested in learning about related fields.

In Wisconsin, approximately 200 public and private middle and high schools offer students opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills in STEM through Project Lead the Way (PLTW). The challenging,

Financial aid helps defray costsSecuring financial assistance may mean the difference between the dream of an education and the reality of a degree. In recent years, more than 60 percent of college students in the United States received some form of financial aid to help offset college-related expenses, such as tuition and fees, books and supplies. In the 2013-14 academic year, nearly one-half of WCTC’s program students received some form of financial aid.

Numerous forms of financial aid are available to students; some are based on need while others are based on merit, and all are designed to meet individual student needs.

The most common forms include: • Loans – Money that has to be paid back with interest.• Grants – Money that does not need to be repaid.• Work-study – Money earned through a job.• Scholarships (External and WCTC Foundation) – Money that does not

need to be repaid.

Additionally, any student who served in the armed services of the United States – either regular services, Selected Reserves or National Guard – may be eligible for some form of financial assistance. Dependents of veterans may also be eligible.

Application deadlines for WCTC Foundation scholarships are twice per year, and only one application needs to be completed per academic year to be considered for a wide variety of available scholarships.

WCTC’s Financial Aid office is available to help students obtain financial aid so they can focus on their studies without the worry of how they will pay for school. For detailed information about financial aid and how to get started, check out www.wctc.edu/finaid.

Instructor certified by NASBITE International as CGBP trainer

Susan Dragotta, instructor in WCTC’s Global Business program, was recently certified by the NASBITE International organization as a trainer for the Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) credential.

She is the only certified CGBP trainer in Wisconsin. NASBITE International is a professional organization for the global business community. The organization’s mission is to advance global business practice, education and training.

WCTC plans to have the Global Business program accredited by NASBITE International, and getting the lead instructor certified was the first step. Accreditation will give the program greater credibility and advance the program locally and nationally.

Faculty re-wrote the curriculum to focus on online availability and classroom teaching, which was an effort between WCTC, Northcentral Technical College, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and Madison College, funded by a grant through the Department of Education.

industry. In order for a program to be launched, we are required to do a significant amount of industry research to provide justification of the need for our graduates. Fortunately, WCTC has an excellent team of researchers who conduct the research and assist us with the analysis and work with us through the entire program planning and implementation process. The bottom line for programs is that there has to be job demand for our graduates. If our data does not support the demand, the program will not launch.

From a dean’s perspective, what are the greatest benefits of a technical college education?

When students graduate with a technical college degree, they are immediately ready to enter the workforce with the skills needed to do specific jobs. In addition, they leave with the “soft skills” that are of equal importance when entering the world of work. The active-learning strategy that we utilize requires the students to be fully engaged with their educational experience rather than just being a passive learner. Finally, the faculty have years of practical work experience in the areas that they teach prior to entering the classroom which provides our students with real-life scenarios.

How do our programs prepare business students for careers right after graduation or for the next level of education?

WCTC’s main purpose is to prepare our students for work and a career. Our occupational focus means that we are teaching the skills that our students need to be successful in the workplace. The placement rate of our students is very high and this provides an indication that our graduates are in demand. We are also seeing more and more students who are coming to us with the intention of pursuing a bachelor’s degree after they finish their associate’s. The students in the School of Business are expected to give nothing short of 100% if they expect to succeed. The rigor of the programs and the daily work prepares our students well for the pursuit of advanced academic degrees.

How do the business programs offered at WCTC align with the needs of local business and industry?

Advisory committees (comprised of business and industry professionals) ensure that the programs within the School of Business are aligned with the needs of business and
