Welcome

Yale Women’s Crew has come a long way since 1974! Shaped by its rowers, coaches, and some key events over the last 4 decades, the Yale Women’s Crew program now offers the best collegiate rowing experience in the country. We are all grateful to the

Heroes of YWC—people who were determined to make it better, not only for themselves, but also for the future. Just as we are today. YWC alumnae and friends will Drive Our Future, With Each Other, For Each Other—our campaign to ensure that this program not only survives but thrives in the years ahead.

Joel Ristuccia ‘72Ristuccia, a member of the Yale men’s crew as an undergraduate, served as the fi rst head coach of the women’s program in the fall of 1972. He oversaw the transition from an intercollegiate boat to a club sport and held the team’s fi rst practices at the Lagoon. With a budget of $600, Ristuccia volunteer coached a team of 11 women in that fi rst season, which helped establish the tradition of women’s crew at Yale.

Nat Case ‘70Case took over the Yale women’s rowing program in the fall of 1973 and helped build the program into a perennial national power. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs had four varsity boats capture national championships, in addition to his varsity and second var-sity crews combining to claim eight Eastern Sprints titles from 1974-1993.

A former rower at Yale (1966-70), he coached the fours on the U.S. Olympics team in 1980, the U.S. Women’s lightweight crew in 1982 and the U.S. Pre-Elite team in 1983. Case was inducted into the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009.

Wendy Davis Davis guided the Bulldogs for four seasons from 1994-97. Under her leadership, the Bulldogs fi nished fi fth at the inaugural NCAA Championships in 1997. In 1994, she coached the varsity eight to a third-place fi nish at the EARC Sprints and a second-place fi nish at the National Championships, its highest fi nish since 1988.

At the international level, Davis mentored the U.S. Junior Women’s National Team in 1989 and the U.S. Junior Women’s Sculling Development Team in 1988. She has been the Head Coach at the University of Minnesota since 2000.

Chris Wilson ‘83 A decorated oarswoman at Yale, Wilson graduated in 1983 and was a two-time captain of the women’s crew. Prior to taking over the varsity, she coached Yale’s women’s novice crew to undefeated seasons in 1986 and 1987 and Eastern and National Collegiate champi-onships. In 1987, she became the fi rst woman to coach men at a major college when she was named the freshman heavyweight coach.

Wilson led the U.S. Lightweight women’s double to a silver medal at the 1990 World Championships and coached the Canadian Junior National team at the 1994 World Championships in Munich, Germany.

Will Porter Porter, who is in his 15th season as the head coach, has built the Bulldogs’ program into one of the most successful women’s crew programs in the country. Under his guidance, Yale has advanced to the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships in each of the last 14 seasons and posted four top-fi ve team fi nishes, highlighted by a second-place fi nish in 2004, the highest fi nish in program history.

Porter has coached four boats to NCAA titles, including back-to-back championships by the varsity eight in 2007 and 2008. The Bull-dogs claimed the varsity eight for the third time in four years when they won the 2010 NCAA grand fi nal. The 2009 second varsity also won an NCAA crown.

The 2007 College Rowing Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, Porter has been named the New England Coach of the Year by the CRCA fi ve times (2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2013). His crews have won the NCAA Championship, the Eastern Sprints Championship (2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010), the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship and the Women’s Henley Regatta. In addition, Yale has won the Charles Willing Team Trophy at Eastern Sprints three times under his guidance.

Porter’s career as a national team oarsman was highlighted by a silver medal race in the 4- at the 1991 Pan American Games and a bronze medal performance in the 8+ at the 1993 World Championships.

s will do what you ask them to do. You set the standard, they will try to get there……. My coaching changed most dramatically when I became a parent. It was then that I realized that coaching is simply teaching people to do something they don’t yet know how to do….just athletes. These are people. People who want me to teach them how to go fast in a boat, together.” Will Porter, June 2011

Yale has compiled an outstanding record with crews that have been fortunate enough to make the trip to the Henley Women’s (HWR) and the Henley Royal Regatta (HRR).

The Bulldogs competed in the Henley Women’s Regatta in Henley, England, for the fi rst time in 2001 and won gold in the open eight. A week later at the (HRR) Yale fell to the Australian Institute of Sport in the semifi nals.

Yale returned to the Henley Women’s Regatta in 2005 and defeated the Vesta Rowing Club to win the Elite 8+ Sports Council Cup. Yale also entered three fours that year. In the Senior Coxed Four the Yale “B” entry advanced to the fi nal while the “A” four lost to the eventual winner of the event Nottingham University. The straight four advanced to the Avril Vellacott Cup fi nal. At the (HRR) the varsity eight claimed victory over Furnivall Sculling Club, and then lost a tight race to the Thames Rowing Club in the semi-fi nals of the Remenham Challenge Cup.

In 2009 Yale’s elite eight boat set a Women’s Henley course record (4:40) in defeating the British U-23 eight for the Sports Council Cup, while the senior eight beat Agecroft R.C. to take the GP Jefferies Cup. In the elite fours, Yale fell in the semifi nals to Nottingham Minerva, the eventual winners of the Copas Cup. At the HRR, the varsity eight defeated a Clyde A.R.C. & Edinburgh University composite and Thames R.C. in their fi rst two races before falling to Leander Club & Wallingford R.C., which was essentially Great Britain’s national team, in the fi nal of the Remenham Cup.

The tradition of Yale women’s crew began with a $600 budget and a small boathouse at the lagoon,

but within three years it became a varsity sport at the conclusion of the 1974 season. The program partici-pated in its fi rst Eastern Sprints that season and began its path towards national success.

The 1976 season was a pivotal year in the program’s history as it was the fi rst that there was a full-time women’s coach position. More notably, in March, members of the women’s crew team protested the lack of adequate locker and shower facilities by disrobing in front of assistant athletic director Joni Barnett to reveal the words “Title IX” written on their bodies. They read a team letter detailing their situation and necessity to be treated as serious athletes. The protest made news across the country and led to the addition of locker facilities at the boathouse by the end of the year.

The varsity claimed its fi rst victory at the Eastern Sprints in 1977 and defeated Radcliffe for the fi rst time. Just two years later, the 1979 varsity (Bow Jane Krause; Sally Fiser; Lisa Laverty; Virginia Gilder; Cathy Pew; Elaine Mathjies; Anne Boucher; Stroke Mary O’Conner; Cox Joyce Frocks) went undefeated and won both the Eastern Sprints and a National Championship

The Bulldogs’ program grew in size and with added depth be-came even more successful, claiming their fi rst Charles Will-

As women’s rowing grew, Yale continued to be among the top programs in the country. The second eight won the Schweppes International Regatta

in 1992 and the varsity four won a national championship in 1993. The varsity eight won a bronze at the Eastern Sprints and a silver medal at the Collegiate Nationals in 1994. The NCAA hosted its fi rst championship in 1997 and the Bulldogs claimed fi fth place as a team at the inaugural event.

The fi nal year of the decade marked the groundbreaking of the Gilder Boathouse and Yale claimed a bronze medal in the varsity eights at the Eastern Sprints and a gold medal at the IRA Regatta in 1999.

Women’s Rowing at Yale

"On April 17, 2010 we lost to Princeton by two lengths of open water. Our previously undefeated season was a joke. From our fi rst stroke at practice the following Monday we pulled like our lives depended on it. We attacked the warmup, even the row in to the dock. For the fi rst time, the nine of us had an unspoken understanding: every stroke, every second was precious. I'll never forget that feeling of deter-mination. It was greater than any one of us. That feeling, that visceral resolve is my strongest memory of YWC. It's also my proudest memory. I can still feel how hard we worked when we were down and it's more valuable than any number of trophies and medals." - Alice Henly, Class of 2010

… it really has always been about the people. I have never met a more inspiring, passionate, dedicated, driven and motivated up of individuals- both the rowers and the coaches. Together, both on and off the water, we helped each other achieve goals we

never thought possible as individuals or as a team. We supported each other through diffi cult times and were the fi rsthappy occasions together. When I think back on my time at Yale, it is of these friendships and teammates I think of fiwith the greatest fondness.” - Amy Winkelstein ‘96

The day we came "home" to this grand place and shoved-off from our new dock was absolutely magical. We couldn't believe our luck. Did the Gilder boathouse help YWC to go faster? my favorite racing memories of YWC was at the Princeton Chase last fall. By the e race, we had closed the gap between our boat and the Princeton boat that started

ahead. Our coxswain was yelling at their coxswain to yield, and when she didn't, our coxswain essentially ran them over until they were forced to steer wide on the turn It was acoxswain essentially ran them over until they were forced to steer wide on the turn.moment of sheer guts that I think embodies our bulldog tenacity...and ramming Pron their home course was truly satisfying.”Maddie Lips ‘14
