What are WCP Pneumatic Wheels?

The pneumatic wheel options offered by WCP are some of the most popular in the FIRST Robotics competition. The core ideology is to have one hub that can support both 6” and 8” tires. Depending on the game, teams are able to use either wheel size without having to purchase another hub. The hub with adapter supports any 200 x 50mm tire available on the market.

Available Pneumatic Wheels

There are three types of pneumatic wheels available to purchase from WCP. - 6” OD Centipede - 8” OD SmoothGrip - 8” OD Diamond

Any 200mm x 50mm tire is also compatible with the Pneumatic Wheel Hub.

Width and Diameter at Set Pressures

Below is a table with pressure values and the associated diameter and width measure-ments for each type of pneumatic wheel. These values need to be taken into consider-ation when a drive train is being designed to ensure that no rubbing will occur and vari-ous pressures.

Step 1

The Pneumatic Wheel Hub will com with the screws and cover plate pre-installed. Be-fore attempting to install the tire onto the hub, the cover plate needs to be removed.

Be sure that the tube is in the tire before trying to put the hub in the tire.

The tire will be a tight fit onto the hub. In order to help with installation, spray the area with a soapy water solution where the tire and hub contact each other. This should help the tire slide on much easier.

The stem in the tube needs to go through the slot in the hub. Also it is recommended that the stem faces towards the cover plate to make filling with air easier.

Note: Simple Green is the recommended spray to use

Step 2

It may be hard to get the tire to sit fully on the hub due to it wanting to spring back off.

Once the tire is on the hub as far as possible, get all six #8-32 bolts started. Work around the cover plate and tighten each bolt a little at a time until all bolts are tight.

Be careful not to have the tire pinched between the cover plate and the edge of the hub.

Note: Apply blue loctite to the #8-32 bolts before installation

Step 1

Slide Pneumatic Wheel Hub Adapter onto the Pneumatic Wheel Hub. Align the slots for the tube stem in both components.

Once the hub adapter in installed, rivets may be installed to hold the adapter in place. The recommended rivets can be found on McMaster (P/N 97519A098).

The hub does not need to be riveted to the hub. The wheel will still function without the rivets.

FAQ

Q: What PSI should the wheels be inflated to?A: Inflate the wheels to the achieve the desired hardness. It is recommended that if used in a drive train, the out wheel should be softer than the center wheel or wheels. This helps with achieving the desired drop in the center.

Trouble Shooting

Issue: Not able to turn with these wheels

Possible Solutions:1. This can be caused by having not enough center wheel drop in the drive train. If

possible increased the center wheel drop distance.2. If increasing the center wheel drop is not possible, decrease the air pressure in the

outer sets of wheels and increase the pressure in the center wheels. This will do effectively the same as increasing the center wheel drop.
