The next Newark Public Radio, Inc. Board of Trustees

meeting is scheduled for January 11, 2016 at WBGO,

54 Park Place, Newark, NJ 07102. The meeting is open

to the public.

WBGO, New Jersey PerformingArts Center (NJPAC) and theInstitute of Jazz Studies at

Rutgers-Newark present: Jazz, Jews, and African Americans: CulturalIntersections in Newark and Beyond, anexhibit which explores some of themost fruitful and sometimes con-tentious relationships in jazz historythrough photos, documents and text.

The exhibition, on view now throughDecember 13 in the Jewish Museumof New Jersey at Congregation AhavasSholom—Newark’s oldest active syna-gogue—is the centerpiece of a com-munity-wide celebration of jazz. Fivediverse congregations, all within ashort walk of each other alongNewark’s Broadway, are hosting freeevents, tours and activities in conjunc-tion with the showing at the museum.Participants include Ahavas Sholom

(145 Broadway), Clinton MemorialA.M.E. Zion Church (151 Broadway),Iglesia El Sembrador (143 Broadway),First Mount Zion Baptist Church (208Broadway), and Project New Life ofN.J. (Projeto Vida Nova of N.J.) (152Broadway). The exhibit coincides withthe fourth annual TD James Moody JazzFestival at NJPAC (Nov. 7–15).

“This is a shining example of how thearts and faith-based groups can partnerin a celebration of their mutual love ofjazz,” said Donna Walker-Kuhne,NJPAC’s Vice President of CommunityEngagement. “We’re pleased to seesuch enthusiastic collaboration amongmembers of the spiritual community in this unique, multicultural down-town corridor.”

files influential figures from the 1920sto the present day and reveals how theirroles in performance, artist manage-ment, media and recording informed“America’s classical music.” The narra-tive includes examples of famous suc-cess stories, such as trumpeter LouisArmstrong’s lifelong friendship with theJewish family that nurtured his talent, aswell as clashes and exploitation betweenthe two cultures.

Visitors can learn about the contribu-tions made by George and Ira Gershwinin bringing a new dimension to blackjazz and the later impact of the com-posers’ canon on Ella Fitzgerald’srecording career. A reproduction of aNazi propaganda poster, disparaging to

both Jews and African Americans, con-demns jazz as degenerate music.Controversies over blackface traditionsand exploitative managers are chroni-cled side-by-side with tributes to someof the jazz world’s most timeless pair-ings of black and white musicians.

The exhibit emphasizes Newark’sprominence in the jazz landscape byspotlighting such legends as SarahVaughan, Wayne Shorter, Willie “TheLion” Smith, and James Moody.Innovators like poet Amiri Baraka, author of Blues People: Negro Music inWhite America; illustrator Paul Bacon, renowned for his dust jackets andalbum covers; and Lorraine Gordon, owner of the Village Vanguard, also

Jazz Night in America wanted toknow what drives these guys, posing as a fly on the wall as they listen to records, andcatching some of them as they get a rareopportunity to present their own music atDizzy’s.

And it happens in the jazz haven ofChicago, in a club called the Green Millwhich doesn’t look to have changed muchsince its days as a Prohibition-era speakeasy.Jazz Night in America follows Pat andCameron to the gig, then stays up all nightwith the Sabertooth Organ Quartet.

Year End Message from WBGO’s

President, Amy Niles

Often when I meet people for the firsttime, they ask me how long I havebeen at WBGO. I say “I am new here.

I have only been at WBGO for nine years”.Many of our listeners tell us that they havebeen with us since our first day—over 36years ago, so indeed by WBGO standards, Iam new.

We have seen so many changes sinceWBGO’s founding in 1979—our firstannouncers played only vinyl and whilethey still play some, now much of ourlibrary is stored digitally. Back then, youcould only access us on your radio dial andnow we have listeners all over the planet. And with all of the opportunities created bythis new found global audience, we facemany new challenges- most of which couldnever have been imagined when WBGO firststarted. But the premise upon which thisgreat public media organization was found-ed still remains. We are here to preserveand present this culturally significant musicto you each and every day. We continue toinnovate- producing new shows like JazzNight in America hosted by ChristianMcBride in partnership with NPR and Jazzat Lincoln Center which is syndicated onover 150 stations across the country andbrings the most diverse audience to publicradio of any NPR production. WBGO KidsJazz now in its 23rd year reaching morechildren than ever before. But what is in ourfuture, is very much what has been a partof our past- presenting the music that welove from our home in Newark, New Jersey. That will never change. We thank you forthe support that enables us to continue thismission.
