Wildlife Picture of the Month
The
SOUTHERN FLYING SQUIRREL
SOUTHERN FLYING SQUIRREL (Glaucomys volans)We don’t often get to see this amazing squirrel since itis most active at night …seeking a diet of fruits, nuts,
seeds and a variety of other foods. During the day theyden in holes in trees, abandoned woodpecker holes,
nest boxes and other protected areas. They don’tactually fly but rather glide which can be up to 250 ft
from a height of 60 feet. A special flap of skin betweenthe wrists and ankles stretches out to create a sort ofparachute which allows them to perform remarkable
aerobatic feats.
