1918 Flu Epidemic filled the Fire Hall & YMCAIn 1918 life expectancy for men was 53 years and 54 for women.
Typhoid fever was very prevalent. Diphtheria was like a thief in the night. Many a small boy cut his foot in the barnyard or on a rusty nail and then lockjaw would develop, then death.
Attitudes toward healthcare were changing. Physicians were just starting to set up offices and to receive “real” clinical training.. Hospitals with sterilization and isolation were now becoming popular.

1918 Flu Epidemic
The Flu epidemic of 1918 killed more people than died in World
War I.
This epidemic swept the world and killed an estimated 50 million people. One fifth of the worlds population was attacked. Within months it had killed more people than an other illness in recorded history.

ED nights were slower in 1967
Staff did not stay in the ED at night. When the bell rang a nurse would come down from the floor to assess the patient.
She then would call the physician “On Call” at home and tell them about the patient. The doctor may come in or request the patient to go to his office.
My… how times have changed!
