The United States Post Office on South Main Street in Newark was constructed in 1911 - 1913. The building was designed by James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department from 1887 - 1912, and is of the era of individually designed federal buildings. The exterior stucco finish is unique among Taylor’s New York work. The interior features a terrazzo floor, bordered with white marble trim and white marble baseboards. The walls are paneled with oak to a height of eleven feet.

The town of Savannah was a part of the land given to officers and men who served in the Revolutionary Army from the State of New York. The first settlement, near the Seneca River was by Dr. James Young, a veteran of the American Revolution.

A little known fact about the town of Sodus is that it is the birthplace of Arbor Day. In 1881, Edward C. Delano of Sodus Center wrote an article that was published in the Wayne County Alliance titled “Shade Trees”. Delano urged that shade trees be planted in all the town’s schoolyards. In that year he was elected

Wayne County School Commissioner and worked tirelessly for this cause. In 1888 the New York State Legislature proclaimed, officially, Arbor Day. The first Arbor Day circulars were sent out from Albany in the spring of 1889. Some of the trees planted in Sodus on that first Arbor Day still stand.

One of the prominent families in Walworth was the Yeomans. Theron Yeomans came from Greene County in 1830. After about ten years, he started a successful nursery business. Many of the

orchards set out in Wayne County and throughout New York State came from Yeoman’s stock. Yeomans was also responsible for introducing the first herd of Holstein cattle to America.

Two interesting incidents took place in the early history of the town of Rose. Around 1840, some local citizens came to believe that chests of gold and precious gems were buried in different locations throughout the town, steered by spirits through a psychic. Groups of people would gather at night at these various

locations and silently dig for the treasure. The legend was that if a single word was spoken, before the treasure was found, it would disappear and evil spirits would rise up against those present. Needless to say, no treasure was found, and those involved finally gave up the search.

The hamlet of South Butler is historically significant as the site of the ordination of the first woman minister in America — Antoinette Brown Blackwell. A woman ordained as a minister was unheard of in those days. She was deserted by family and friends, but persisted in the effort to accomplish her goal. She worked and saved and studied until she graduated from Oberlin Seminary in 1850 after three years of poverty, ridicule and sexual

discrimination. She graduated, but was refused a license to preach. Antoinette then turned to social reform and speaking tours to further the cause of women’s rights. On July 4, 1853, she was the first woman ever to give an Independence Day address in South Butler. The Congregational Church called her to be their pastor on September 15, 1853. She preached her last sermon when she was 90 — loved, honored and respected.

The Sodus Chamber of Commerce Mural Project

The project is off to a good start, yet still has a way to go. To date about one third of the $4,800 needed to complete the mural has been raised. Through the generosity of Richard Santelli, the mural will be placed on the side of the building, on the northwest corner of Main and Maple in the Village of Sodus.

Locally born artist James Zeger will be painting the 8’ by 12’ mural beginning in July and will be aided by Sodus Central High School art students. Special paints for outdoor use are needed, with a donation from Golden Paints already received. The mural will be sealed properly to ensure its preservation for years to come. Plans are being made to have the mural on display during its creation so the public can view the progress. This will be our town’s 5th outdoor mural project.

The selection of images was almost overwhelming due to the amount of history in and around Sodus. The committee finally selected eight different scenes to represent Sodus’s history from each village and hamlet as a demonstration of the unity in our township. The Hamlet of Joy is represented by the Joy Schoolhouse, the Hamlet of Wallington is represented by the Cobblestone School House, the Methodist Cobblestone Church - still in use in Alton, and the Hamlet of Sodus Center is represented by the Brick Church. The Hamlet of South Sodus was the home of the lime kiln and of course the historical and well known Sodus Point Lighthouse. Also shown is the trolley barn in the Village of Sodus, and to symbolize our agriculture there is a depiction of a hand operated orchard sprayer circa 1900.

At the $25 per square foot level your name will be listed on the donor appreciation plaque. At the $200 per square yard level your name will be listed in larger letters. Should you wish to become an actual part of the mural, your likeness (or a family member’s) can be added for $250 but space is limited to only eight images. We would love to work with any corporate sponsors and their suggestions for recognition. Whether you are “new” to Sodus, an old established family or business, or just interested in history, we’re asking for your support.

Dedication of the Sodus mural is targeted for August 2015. Please join us in being a part of Sodus history. The donation form may be found on the Chamber’s website at www.sodusny. For more information contact the Sodus Chamber at 315-576-3818.

Lyons was known for being the home of one of the most successful and prestigious businesses in the world. The H.G. Hotchkiss International Prize Medal Essential Oil Company was founded by Hiram Gilbert Hotchkiss in 1839 in Phelps. By 1841, the business was moved to Lyons to be nearer the Erie Canal.

It was found that Hotchkiss oil was purer than any other oil available and sold for more per pound than any other. It was said that travelers on the Erie Canal could always tell when they were nearing Lyons — they could smell the peppermint!

The H.G. Hotchkiss was sold in 1982 to an Indiana company, which continued to operate in Lyons until 1990 when they moved back to Indiana. The long, successful history of the H.G. Hotchkiss Company made Lyons the peppermint capital of the world for many years.

Visit the Hotchkiss Essential Oil Building, on the corner of Water Street and Leach Road, by appointment only, (315) 946-0097.
