Oppression, organization, militancy, lib-eration, activism: these are some of thebuzz words that will help viewers exam-ine and synthesize the political climatefor LGBT people over the past 40 years,as documented by those who livedthrough it, with the Center’s newly cre-ated archival exhibition Into the Streets!
Into the Streets! is the first in a series ofquarterly archival exhibitions the Centerfeatures throughout 2010, funded in partby the William Penn Foundation. Rareand original documents and ephemerafrom the Center’s John J. Wilcox, Jr.Library and Archive make up the majority
of this display, on view in the Center’snew archival exhibition space throughMarch 2010. In addition, the exhibitincludes auxiliary programming for thecommunity to engage the creators of theexhibition, providing an outlet for discus-sion and reflection on this importantchapter in LGBT history. Offering oppor-tunities for collaboration, parts of theexhibit will be available to loan to out-side organizations.
Making its debut at the Center with anopening reception Thursday, January 14from 6:30-8:30 PM, the exhibit’s kick offevent features light food and drink. Thiswill be the first opportunity to view Intothe Streets! featuring a timeline ofprotest marches and political actionsfrom the late 1940s through the presentday and highlighting pieces from theCenter’s vast archival collection. Over the past two months, the Center has experienced manymoving, special moments as a result of hosting the UnitedStates Holocaust Memorial Museum traveling exhibit, NaziPersecution of Homosexuals: 1933 – 1945. At the openingreception in October, the Center welcomed over 100 guests, and soon the word was out that such a unique exhibit washere in Philadelphia for the first time ever. In fact, theCenter received prime placement in The PhiladelphiaInquirer with a feature story in the Sunday edition, creatinga dramatic increase in the number of exhibition visitors, educating our friends and neighbors about a little knownpart of LGBT history.
As the Center reflects on what this exhibit meant to thecommunity, we are always thinking about one particularinstance that demonstrates the importance of preserving our
history as a community. One afternoon, Director of CenterServices Candice Thompson sat down with members fromanother organization based in Philadelphia, the HolocaustAwareness Museum, to share how the Center was able tohost such a comprehensive and moving exhibit.
Discussing logistics, programming, budgets, and other impor-tant but admittedly dry topics, the group spent some timeat the end of the meeting seeing the exhibit itself and read-ing the words on each panel. Taking in the personal storiesand the pictures of those individuals who experienced theHolocaust, one visitor stopped at one of the panels. Thisvisitor, a Holocaust survivor, said that she did not knowwhat happened to her neighbor. Because of the exhibit, shefinally found out: her neighbor perished in a concentrationcamp because she was a lesbian and Jew.

Dear Jessie and Jordan:
I regularly contribute to the Center, and I’m getting thingstogether to do my taxes (that time of the year again, ugh!)
Can the Center provide a receipt for my accountant and me?

Deduct ions

With the current economic climate, it’s difficult to make ends meet letalone set aside additional funds for charitable giving. That’s why weare urging many of our members to enroll in our automatic credit anddebit card deductions program!
Let’s say you make an automatic contribution of $40 monthly over thecourse of 2010. This amount, less than you’d spend on your morningcoffee monthly, becomes $480 annually. If the Center can get 100 ofits members to enroll in this small deduction program, we’ve justraised $48,000! And, to be a member of the Center’s CornerstoneSociety, donors must contribute only $85 per month!
Just imagine how much of a difference you can make withouteven thinking about it! Thirty people automatically giving$50 a month for a year would pay for all of the Center’s win-ter utilities through 2009 - 2010!
Just give us the amount you’d like charged each month, and we’ll takecare of the rest. And, you can increase, decrease, or stop this auto-matic charge at any time.
If you would like more information about how this program works or ifyou’d like to enroll, contact Development Coordinator Josh Kruger [email protected] or 215-732-2220.
