By-Ways To Southern Africa’s Magnificent Mountain Splendour Dear Members, Stakeholders & Friends in Tourism, And time just keeps marching on - already we have completed 4 x exhibitions this year. Our strong visibility at these shows is proving to be very fruitful. At the Indaba, we found it very interesting engaging with the trade and finding out from them what their clients are looking for and how we can work collaboratively with stakeholders. The MDR is definitely very well positioned to meet travelers and corporate needs and we look forward to following up on these leads on your behalf. We are also very excited at the benefits and business opportunities that have come about, as seen on page 2. And off we go again, the Gauteng Outdoor Eco Adventure Expo in Kyalami, Johannesburg running from the 24 th 26 th May. Please remember we are offering you the opportunity to include your photographs in our slide show more details follow on page 4. A message from the Chair From the Media Desk Website updates we have now received and uploaded a total of over 100 member’s information. Thank you so much for your time and commitment to this process. The design and navigation of the site is looking fantastic. We are gunning to have this completed (as far as possible as it will always be a work in progress) by mid June. There will be an area for the calendar but also some juicy spots for hot news SO once again I implore you to send me - even 3-5 liners (or more, full press releases and photos welcome so that I may send these to our press lists)- of what’s up, what happened, what’s going to happen, fun stories, unusual stories. The more live we keep the site the more chances you will be seen. A whirlwind Indaba saw the stand buzzing and some very interesting meetings were held with media and potential stakeholders. Please see the following page for some great business opportunities for you. And more in the making…. I certainly enjoyed the opportunity to meet members, patrons and sponsors who I have not managed to meet yet, given the vastness of the route. So please excuse the photo of myself with our Boundless friends, however I thought perhaps sometimes it is easier to put a name to a face when we are communicating so seen here with Boundless’s Programme Manager Deborah Kahatano and Marketing Manager Roland Vorwerk. Film Tourism ndash what is it

Film induced tourism explores the effects that film and TV-productions have on the travel

decisions made when potential tourists plan their upcoming holiday or visit to a

destination Films documentaries TV-productions and commercials inspire people to

experience the locations seen in the content screened to explore new destinations Film

tourism is an excellent vehicle for destination marketing and also creates opportunities

for product and community entrepreneur development such as location tours or film

heritage museums to name but a few One of the best examples of film induced tourism

relates to lsquoThe Lord Of The Ringsrsquo trilogy filmed in New Zealand Research studies

revealed that at least 72 of the current and potential international tourists visiting New

Zealand had seen at least one of the trilogy films More than two-thirds of the tourists

questioned agreed that they would visit the country as a result of the movie (Source

The behaviour of travellers who book their trips using desktop computers and laptops differs significantly from travellers who book via their mobile phones according to pricelinecomrsquos latest study of airline ticket booking trends among travellers with smartphones Pricelinecomrsquos data is based on a sampling of mobile bookings made earlier this year after the Priceline app added the ability to book round-trip and one-way domestic and international airline tickets ldquoMobile-equipped consumers are what we call lsquountetheredrsquo travellersrdquo said pricelinecoms Brian Ek ldquoThey like to create their travel experiences on the fly rather than stick to itineraries planned far in advance Hotels are typically chosen closer to check-in day (even on the same day) and many bookings are made while on the road or after arrival in townrdquo The study found that mobile travel bookers averaged 32 years of age six years younger than the average desktop air booker The study also found that almost half of mobile air bookers booked one-way tickets and found they paid less for their tickets (average $283) compared with desktop users (average $315) Do you think SA travellers will follow this trend I have no doubt in mind that they will Is your website mobile friendly
